Replaced by Oh Internet!. I'm just going to repost my thoughts on ED's passing. Tl;dr if you didn't notice already.

QuoteSorry, I will not be following Oh Internet!, at least, not in the same way I followed ED. I'm sure that Oh Internet! is a fine website, but it's ad-induced censorship will ensure that it is no ED in a different outfit. I will not accept a censored substitute. I will just be going to lurkmore for my internet culture needs instead unless OI! manages to prove themselves.

That all being said, I am not raving that ED needs to come back or anything. I am at terms with ED's passing, sudden as it was and am perfectly fine to let ED Rest In Peace. All things must come to an end, even web sites. Busy Street will one day die. TGWTG will die. Even 4chan will die one day.

I understand why ED died. It simply couldn't take the growing popularity and it's subsequent costs. It couldn't generate any revenue because people wouldn't advertise on ED. It being DMCA'd left and right and being sued was just the bricks that broke the camel's back.

Unfortunately, there will probably never be a website like ED ever again. It was destroyed by the very lolsuits it mocked. Any website that would attempt to do the same thing ED did will eventually face the same problems ED did. Clearly the forces of anti-lulz have triumphed here.

The thing I valued the most about ED was it's honesty. Sure it exaggerated things for the lulz, but at the end of the day, it was truly one of the more trustworthy website out there. Okay, their Global Warming article was written by neocon retards but you can't win them all.

In this day and age of an internet chock full of misinformed idiots, delusional fantards living in a reality-proof bubble, and plain old bullshitters with an agenda to grind, honesty has become a distressingly rare virtue in the mix of it all. Having a place without all that bullshit meant a great deal to me. I could rely on ED to give me the straight shit about almost anything. ED opened my eyes to so many things that was bullshit.

It was ED that pulled my head out of my ass about having autism. That I wasn't really anything special like my high school doused me with. That I definitely should be in no way proud of being proud of autism and that I shouldn't be okay with my pitiful social skills. That I'm not living in comic book world; I won't be given back a superpower or anything in exchange for a deficiency. If I was blind, I wouldn't get supersenses in exchange, I would just be fucking blind. And autism works the same fucking way. You can't min-max IRL people.

It was ED that finally taught me that being a Nice Guy towards women was hypocritical and made me just as bad as the assholes I hated, only I was a pussy. While I'm still a pussy at least I don't blame anyone except myself and I act nice because I'm expect to, not out of some stupid fantasy ("OH BOY YOU GUYS. THAT ASSHOLE JOCK SURE IS LUCKY I STAYED MY HAND. IF I WASN'T SUCH A NICE GUY, I WOULD HAVE TOTALLY FUCKED HIM UP. SERIOUSLY.) or some lame attempt to get laid.

It was ED that showed me what I could have become. To this day, when I'm at my lowest point, I at least think to myself that whatever I'm doing right now, at least I'm not Chris-Chan. Even being homeless would be preferable to being Chris-Chan or any one of these losers that get shunned by other losers.

And it was ED that got me to not take the internet so seriously. Or myself for that matter.

I will never forget the first time I saw the TGWTG article. I. Was. Furious. How can they say TGWTG isn't funny? I was seriously considering turning against ED when I finally realized that TGWTG wasn't really that funny. With the Nostalgia Critic, how many times did I actually laugh AT his jokes and not just what the hell is going on in the movie? I think his review of "Warriors of Virtue" best exemplifies the contrast between his jokes and the actual movie.

My only two regrets are that I never finished that Mahou Sensei Negima article, not that I really wanted to, since I don't give a shit about that series, anyways. I only really wanted to talk about how TVTropes worships that fucking series, as if it was crafted by Josh Whedon himself. But more importantly, I never got to write that Tsukihime article.

Welp. Now, I must find a new website(s) to suck the opinion tit of, as I have no critical thinking skills of my own and clearly am a sheep and must be spoonfed my opinions by overly smug social rejects and journalism drop outs. Any suggestions?

Seriously, though, from the bottom of my heart, ED. You will not be forgotten. You fought well. Rest In Peace.

I wonder if it's possible to decentralize a website so that the burden of hosting it is borne on many backs, and to make it lawsuit resistant?  I mean, how many of us leave our computers on and connected to the internet at all times?
