What game do you think has the best story as a rpg. To me I think chrono trigger and final fantasy 7 has the best story lines to me.

Alright, im seriously thinking of making an entire forum section devoted to why FF7 storyline WAS NOT GOOD

Chronotrigger was excellent. it was EXTREMELY original, and as far as i know, the first game to actually include a form of time travel.

Chronotrigger doesnt need excellent graphics to further itself, like ff7 did. then again i stand by my statement. if ff7 had 16-bit graphics, like ff4, 5 and 6...it wouldve had a much better storyline. read the second page of this, cheetah made me get all philosophical with gaming for no real reason. http://www.ffhacktics.com/forum/viewtop ... 4&start=20

At any rate, my favorite RPGs for their story are

Wild Arms 1-2...3-5 are just not games at all
Final Fantasy 4 remade for DS(it cleared some loopholes up)
Vandal Hearts, but its not worht playing more than once to me
Star ocean. Most people dont like it because of its "space theme" really, the only thing space about it is that you explore worlds other than earth. i mean, they couldve made it one planet, and one REALLY huge map, but if you break it down into smaller planets, you dont spend one hour going form one to the other.
...got offtopic

Some of the better RPGs were for the psx, before FF7 came along and overshadowed them. but some SNES goodies lie around, let me look though my database in a bit :P

I agree with SB on FF7, the story is nothing special, it has its moments, and overall I enjoy the characters (especially Barret and Cid), and the materia system was a lot of fun, even if it took most of each character's uniqueness away from them.

I also second SB on Chrono Trigger being one of the very best SNES RPGs, right up there with Earthbound (which is my personal all-time favorite RPG ever). If I had to make of list of favorite RPGs, it'd be something like

1. Earthbound
2. Chrono Trigger
3. Seiken Detentsu 3
4. Star Ocean 3
5. Legend of Mana
"Dave?  Are you there?"
"Yeah.  I can't get you through the cell now."
"You have to talk through the bratwurst from now on. I'm sorry. I didn't know it would do that."

Suikoden! how the hell did i forget that one... D: thats my favorite...though imo 1 was better, storyline wise

Granstream Saga was also pretty decent

Persona 2, which recently got fan translated is actually very excellent.

Star Ocean 3.... For some reason I couldn't get into that game and I love Star Ocean 2. Maybe I just really didn't like the twist they had in that game.

Xenogears has a good story as well though.

As for Suikoden 1, I liked the story but Suikoden 2 seems so much more developed though, especially character wise.

Maybe at first glance, but suikoden is the ONLY game that ever made me cry... when

QuoteSPOILER

Gremio died, i really felt genuinly sad. nothing short of a bit of betrayel in suikoden 2..and flick and victor just expand on their already developed personalities in suikoden 1

just my opinion.

You felt sad???

I guess that right there is enough of a reason why I liked 2 more than 1. Suikoden 1 is still a great game, but a little on the short side though.

agreed, short, but it was the first in the series, there wasnt much of a world ot expand on.

Gremio kinda hit home on a personal level for me. he had alot of, albiet sometimes gay, love for his master...he wasnt gay though, just devoted to his masters safety.

Regardless of that, there wasnt any real advancement for characters other than flik and victor in suikoden 2. as you progressed through the storyline you switched side characters so often it was nuts...like how that one creepy guy in a cave comes up and threatens to kill you cause he doesnt think you cna kill neclord, only ot join you and upon "neclords defeat" has no real plot advancement...just saying.

Well tell me in detail why you think Final fantasy 7 storyline is not good. Also Final fantasy tactics has a great storyline too and Final fantasy 4 has a good storyline too.

I would love to read an entire section devoted to why FFVII's storyline was not good.  I personally love the story, but I would enjoy any banter about the storyline's quality.  I don't want to argue in any way, I would just enjoy hearing your opinions.

The only real reason people hate on FFVII is becuase it sold so many copies and has so many fans that people like abusing the fans in any way possible.

That is what I think at least. <dunce|XD

Xenogears
Chrono Cross
I also think Terranigma had a really fascinating story, although I'm not entirely sure that can be classified as an RPG

There are only a very few good parts to FF7's story, like Cloud's past. Otherwise it's the plain ol' saving the world routine.

I've been trying to think of something to add to this thread that hasn't already been said. A little surprise there's no love for the Breath of Fire games but then those really weren't anything special in the realm of epic storytelling.

What about the Lufia games?

Best stories in my opinion
Xenogears
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy VI
Maybe more, can't think of any

@Kuraudo Sutoraifu: I think the story is OK, but it doesn't have a good pacing. You start of bombing Shinra stuff, then suddenly the name Sephiroth appears. You decide to chase him because ...(dunno really, he killed the President???). Anyway, you chase him for a long while, going around the world and eventually find out he's trying to summon Meteor. The rest of the story is great imo.

I didn't like Sephiroth very much either. He was in essence, just a Momma's boy.

In essence momma boy sephiroth was a fake sephiroth. Real Sephy was fucking frozen in mako...

lol Fake Sephy wasnt entirely a great clone either. alot of chemical defects and, like hojo said with cloud, was a failure. a powerful failure, but a failure.

You both couldn't be more wrong about Sephiroth.

Nah. Sepiroth was a Momma's boy and Cloud was an asshole in the beginning and just ended up being bland and uninspired. Squall was an asshole and a winy little bitch, which is arguably worse than Cloud. (BTW, FF8 would have been a much better game if it had been about Laguna instead.) Hell, Zidane was a deeper character than Cloud and Squall put together. Tidus at least had hatred for his father and love for Yuna going for him. FFX was a truly depressing story.
