Is there a way to add additional bonuses to a character for riding a chocobo such as status buffs and regular stat boosts? Or a way to change abilities to only be usable while riding a chocobo?

I believe that is probably not true now.... Because you lose hit stats when riding one , the enemy gets more hit rate on you usually. And you lose hit rate knocking you down to 80's if you attack from the back. But that is a good idea :)

this reminds me, have the exact effects of riding a chocobo been documented anywhere? I just took a quick look around gamefaqs and didn't find anything. IIRC, in addition to the obvious movement replacement, there are some status immunties and other such hidden changes.
"Dave?  Are you there?"
"Yeah.  I can't get you through the cell now."
"You have to talk through the bratwurst from now on. I'm sorry. I didn't know it would do that."

Well, riding chocobos have these benefits to them:

-You obtain the Chocobo's Move/Jump range as well as their movement ability (Black > Fly; Red > Ignore Elevation).
-Any abilities used on a mounted Chocobo is directly human related. The best example is a Dragoon/Lancer mounted on a Chocobo, and having them use Jump. The Chocobo is still considered as part of the human unit, and thus "invisible" on the field.
-Units that are mounted on Chocobos are immune to ALL status ailments with the EXCEPTION of Charm.

This what I've gathered from Qu_Marsh's FAQ on GameFAQs. I believe this very same info is detailed in the BMG, but I'm not sure (haven't checked).

from Notti's DD and random info guide:

*** Immunities, the noble rider ignores such bothersome trifles. ***
Now here are Statuses that CAN be incurred to the rider WHILE on a Chocobo.
The rider does not LOSE any statuses by mounting a Chocobo, he is just
protected from some.

I can confirm that Riding is NOT immune to instant KO/Dead status (wizard / assasin). edit: Nevermind. So this makes wearing the Ribbon better than riding on a chocobo for status protection...
