I find breaking the game and finding the imba combinations to be one of my favorite things to do in a Final Fantasy game.

Smash

I started with newer FF's, and then went on playing earlier ones to see how they were.

Right now, my all time favorite is FFIV, followed closely by VI.

FF13 is utter bullshit, from what I have played so far. Thank heavens I didn't buy the damn thing.

Boxiii

They aren't getting too bad, they just need to recapture what made the old ones good.Twelve was pretty good, and if you didn't enjoy it because of the license board, the Zodiac board edition made it 1000x more enjoyable. Nine is still my favorite, with IV and Tactics close behind.

If you want to see bad Final Fantasy, go play Mystic Quest or Legends 1-3.

SolidSnakeDog

Zodiac board edition?? what the fuck is that?
Man...i will bet that this version is only for china/japonise version of the game right?. (Can't spell japonise right for some reison...)

Boxiii

Yes, it's only in Japanese. Basically instead of one giant license board, there are 12 individual zodiac boards, each being a different job. You choose one per character, and you can't change once you choose. Classes are: white mage, dragoon, machinist, red mage, knight, monk, time mage, breaker, archer, black mage, samurai and thief.

That's the main difference, with other little things such as controllable guests, espers, and L1 speeds up the game for those long walks.

Hey, Mystic Quest was awesome.

And Legends were really the first SaGa games. They borrowed the FF name to hopefully boost sales. (Adventure was the first in the seiken densetsu (secret of mana) series too).

and legends were good games, anyways.  FFL1 was marred by a few bugs though -- it'd never fly nowadays.

Hmm...with all that stuff the japanese version may actually be much better that the one we have...thanks for the reply.

I actually played Mystic Quest and beat it a long time ago. (Lol at the final boss name...making me think of youtube poop lol.
Still there no strategy in this game, use the strongest attack each turn heal wen needed and...that it nothing more.
I think i never played the Legend series...should i try em out?  :?

Just 2.

3 is a little more traditional JRPG, but has roughly the same format.
Just another rebel plotting rebellion.

Play Adventure if you at all liked secret of mana. While it's technically a prequel I didn't even know until I read the wikipedia article (something they never tell you: the main character is the father of SoM's main character).

Increased emphasis on graphics/movies with increased disregard to gameplay.  It started with the ungodly long summons of 7 and hasn't stopped.  In terms of innovation its still very much of a front runner, especially as a series, it's just that the most recent games have some incredibly glaring flaws that hold back the game.

10 needed a scene skip function.  The gameplay and class system was actually very well done, but the final 10% of the game was weaksauce once Tidus learned Quick Hit, Yuna learned Holy, and they both had access to 1 MP weapon customization from monster capturing (pretty easy).

12 needed to have a 4-person party (screw you guests~) and the license board was a bit weaksauce, but the battle system itself was incredibly innovative (I just wish the buffs/debuffs lasted longer), there was plenty of sidestuff to do, and the developers actually did a decent job with telling the story by using battles rather than cutscene after cutscene.

13, from my limited experience from like 5 hours of gameplay, has WAY too many cutscenes and lacks the option to change the setup for a single character (without making every permutation under the sun)

12 has one of the most boring stories of final fantasy. License board was bullshit. The fact that you can run away(I killed like 20 monster in row with one guy with gun). Summons suck (why can't I control them!?). Where the fuck am I suppose to get money?!?!?!?
12 is best at making AI and testing it. That is ONLY good thing that I liked really much!

12 Does have a below-average story. This just don't pick up till much later in the game.
Yeah about the summon..i pefered the style that 10 had...was fun to summon to pawn bosses asses in one on one   (For most at less)

About money making in 12...you need to sell all your loots you got for kiling the monsters. (But this is still a pain i agree.
You probably know it aleardy.)

At less, 12 was no linar like 13.

Personally i think the 13 story fail vs the 12 one. (barely any plot twist, and was the same kind of *Goal* most of the game.
(Don't click here unless you want the basic story spoiled for 13.)
All your party get cursed nearly at the start of the game and needs to do a particular thing to not turn into a monster but by doing this thing, there will turn into crystal forever becoming imortal (Not really) And now the party go on a quest to do this thing to not turn into monster...there is the story. Till the end of the game. There are talks on the way,but most of the game, there talk about the same thing over and over.....and over again. (So much for variety...even if there were some cut scenes about other things but most of the time, this was mainly talk about the main *Goal*.)
You can tell i am not too hot about the story(And explining it)...nothing is worth remebering in this Story. The curse does have a name but i don't remember it...a bit odd by the nomber of times there talk about it ...

yeah and it doesn't help that loot that you get from area is 100-300 worth of gil. And shops in the same area have equipment that cost 100 000 gil per piece of an equipment.

WTF!?

About plot of 13 what I heard it's kinda like starts the sameway as 7.

At least half of JPRGs start with you fighting some big bad organization, so lots of games could be classified as "starting the same way as FF7."

(though I hear you start on a train in FF13 so it might be a bit more than passing resemblance here...)

You mean like the Empire?  (see:  ff2, ff4, ff6 :3)

FF2/4 : Red wings
FF3/6 : Kerfa's Empire
FF7 : SOLDIER (Wy in caps anyway?)
FF8 : The 3 Gardens (Id like the term *Main Base* better)
FF9 : Alexandra's Empire
FF10 : Don't remember the organisation name but there betray there own rule by using machines in the temples. Seimor was one of the leaders.
FF12 : The Judges/The Empire
FF13 : Military/Soldier (Not in CAPS this time but the closest thing to FF7 in the begining of the game)

May be worng for a few homever. I never played FF11 so idk about this one.
About all the FF got a organization to em.

Kaijyuu

Seiken Densetsu: check
Seiken Densetsu 2 (secret of mana): check
Seiken Densetsu 3: Depends on which character you play as.
Suikoden: I think every single entry in this series is about this.

Not just final fantasy.

In western RPGs it seems more common to have an evil conspiracy in an otherwise decent society.

There usally make the other Group Evil, usally wanting to take over the world or destroy it in most cases. (Say can't it be changed for once?)
But if you do are on the *Evil* team, you usally end up attacking you old team a little later in the game to stop em.
Make me wonder....if there is any SquareEnix game you actually play has the bad guys form start to end?
Excluding *My life has a Darklord* on wiiware? (Still Not really *EVIL* because all you do is defending...)
