CoP: Archives (Original Release) / Re: Yet another problem

Is it possible to just take "Ramza" out of the party, or does that break the game?  Similarly, would it be possible to designate "Ramza" a guest to make him unusable?

I tried the demo for the first one and very quickly decided that I never wanted to look at another game in that series again...

The Lounge / Re: Game just like FFT?

FFTA2 is a vast improvement to FFTA in everything but story.  The story does indeed get even worse.  The side stories have a helluva lot more depth though.  It sill sucks compared to FFT, but the balance might be comparable to FFT.

Race "balance" observations:
Seeqs suck no matter what you do with them.  Earlier in the game (as if you can get it particularly early), Reverse X-Potions could deal 400 damage a pop with them, but depending on how you level the rest of your characters, that stops being particularly impressive.  Ultima at least *should* surpass it and you don't have to maintain your inventory to use it.
Assassins aren't goddesses of death anymore.  They are just really awesome.  They are built far more like versatile glass cannons in this one.
Paladins took a similar but different hit.  They lost out on a bit of attack power and now have growths more specialized to being the tanks they are supposed to be.
Most jobs are at least moderately useful in some fashion, even if that is only when used as secondary skillsets.  That said, each race tends to have one or two jobs that are the best for stat growths, and sometimes the best to use.
* Melee humans are best leveled up as Parivir at some point as they max out their physical attack power that much sooner.  Leveling up purely as one is a waste, their PA growth is so high.  As for abilities, this is the closest job to being completely broken in power.  Forget dual-wielding as a human, these abilities are just as powerful and don't restrict you from shields.
* Other races make better mages.  I don't remember the best human growth for MA, but Seer is by far the best one to use... as a Secondary ability set that is.  With Illusionist, you can hit all enemies with both a magic attack and a melee attack... with a crappy weapon of course.  Used with a Ninja with Dual-Wield, they can deal much more damage than most ranged fighters, always have enough MP to trigger Magick Frenzy with a ninja spell, and have a chance of causing a nasty status effect to any enemies that survive.  With Paladin, Parivir, or Blue Mage especially, they make far better Red Mages than actual Red Mages do, minus the double-casting.
* Blue Mage is by far the best job for well-rounded stats.  Its growths aren't high enough to max any of their stats unless you get lucky, but all of them get close enough that it really shouldn't matter.  Stat-wise, they are the jack-of-all-trades but master-of-none, but only just barely, literally.  Heritor is ever so slightly better, but only one character gets that one.
* Nu Mou should level as an Alchemist whenever possible.
* Viera, interestingly enough, are best leveled as Summoners, Assassins, or Fencers.  Assassins are the most well-rounded (and fastest), but are very squishy.  Do not level one as a spellblade.  Despite being an advanced class, spellblade's growths suck compared to Fencer.  Green Mages are a good alternative for MA and Speed growths if you don't like to or don't want to use the speed reset leveling trick.  Using them as Red Mages, Snipers, or Assassins tends to work out best.  Snipers make a very good combination with Spellblade abilities if you like using status effects.
* Moogles are best leveled as a Time Mage for MA, if I remember correctly, or alternate between Gadgeteer and Mog Knight for well-rounded-ness and possibly maxed or close to it magic defense and physical defense.  Gunners are still a good choice to use with Ultima.  The new jobs suck.  Jugglers are still haxx.
* Gria should be leveled as a Raptor for offense or a Geomancer for defense.  Not much point to build one around defense though.  They can never max MA that I'm aware of, but they don't have many spell options to begin with, and Raptor is the best for MA too.
* Don't use Seeq.
* Bangaa have some more leeway.  Trickster is definitely the best for a spell using one (can be done, but certainly won't be your most damaging caster), but Dragoon or Master Monk are better choices for a physical fighter.  Master Monk tends to be fairly awesome for whatever you use it for.

Laws only come one at a time.  Breaking it means you don't get an extra (but never one-of-a-kind) bonus reward for the fight and you can no longer revive anyone until the fight ends.  So yeah, breaking the law handicaps you a bit, but it isn't randomly a tragedy anymore, and you get to know what you'll miss out on before the fight starts, if I remember correctly.  Far less annoying.

If you thought FFTA had good enough gameplay when considered on its own, then it is probably worth trying FFTA2.  If you thought FFTA could have been fun if the law system wasn't so absurd, then it is probably worth trying FFTA2.  If you despised absolutely every bit of FFTA, then FFTA2 probably is NOT worth trying.

The story for the first one was actually intriguing since most indications were that you played the villain.

The second... the side stories were occasionally interesting, one or few being pretty good.  The main plot was indeed horrid though.

Wouldn't Blood Suck backfire against Blood Sucked people since they are undead?  I don't see how you could get them to attack each other without breaking the AI rather badly, and it doesn't seem like all that great an idea either.

Of course, if it doesn't backfire when used against Undead, then that wouldn't be a problem.

Aw, dang, too late to ask you to record a Let's Play or something of that nature, is it PGF?  Always fun to see what new players think of such a sweet and cuddly platformer.

FFTA2 Chocobos have a variety of abilities, usually shared with at least one other color.  Choco Cure, Esuna, Meteo, I think there's one for haste, and I know there's one for healing ally MP, sort of like Chakra.  All of these support moves affect the Chocobo and surrounding allies like FFT Choco Cure does.

You've got a weird... um... deformity with the right side of his face.  There's now a strange dip in his cheek.

I have no idea what you're trying to do with the spikes.  The one on our right now looks quite large compared to the one on our left (and I can't think of any reason to justify that), and while I had thought earlier that one was going to be angled forward on the shoulder and one was to be angled back, it not looks like you really do mean for them to be parallel to each other rather than one on the front of his shoulder and one on the back.  That's... kind of weird.  It indicates that one on our left is pointing TOWARDS his head, which doesn't seem like a good design at all.

The lighting on the shoulder is still awkward.  You've got this pool of light that doesn't make sense to me to begin with, and then you've got the spikes on top of it which should at least cast some shadow on it.  I didn't mean to imply that looking metallic was bad.  Quite the opposite.  It was just a little too shiny compared to the rest of it.  Now it is a little too dull.

I really don't like to give critique this negative, but I prefer the version you had before this.

FFTA2's system was better.  It just has a few horrific balance kinks to work out.

I took another look at the actual face and I'm not sure why I hadn't noticed before.    The eye does not look like the FFT style, the nose appears to be too far on the right side of his face (his right), and the mouth does not match up with the angle of the face at all.  you might have been a bit overzealous with the shading too, considering he is facing an upward angle.

The face has a pillowshaded look on the zoom, but I can understand why you did it that way.  The hair is just horrible.  It looks like tentacles.  Try getting some shading inspiration from some existing sprites and aim for the same style.

I'm pretty sure I like it.  The strand of hair at the front is hard to tell at first what it is supposed to be, but I don't know if that can be helped.  I would very much like to see it with more metallic looking armor.

Looking at the smaller version in the sheet makes it look both better and worse to me.  The shine looks more metallic zoomed out, but it still seems flat to me when zoomed in, and zoomed in or out it doesn't really mach the rest of the helmet.  The spikes are actually hurt by zooming out as they look like little blobs.  The spike that is farther back just looks like it is a malformation or something that is right beside the other spike.  The forward spike could probably be helped by making it bigger and therefore easier to notice without overly outlining.
Really, it's just that shoulder bothering me.

The lower end of the cactuar looks like it could use some cleaning up and for some strange reason you've made it chubbier down there.  The arms look too skinny and flipping them like that looks horrible.  Try to make the second pose consistent with the first for light source.

On second glance, you aren't flipping the back arm like you are the front, but it still looks bad and could use some work.

I like your Dark Knight.  There seems to be some stray pixels near between the first two poses.  The portrait spikes are outlined too heavily and look like something I'd expect for Megaman.  Make the outline less bold and fix the lighting for the shoulder to match the rest of the helmet.
