Sprite editing and inserting to patch questions?

is there a good guide to this for a beginner? i downloaded the sprites id like to use and i have the fft iso but i cant find anything on this site on how to modify a sprite and apply into a game. the guide i found already had all the fftpatcher stuff loaded in. it didnt help im stupid to hacking. thanks
