Quote from: "Voldemort"We don't assume things to be true due to a lack of evidence, we assume them to be false in that case.

No, we do not assume them to be false, we assume them to be unproven.  This still helps your point, though.  Still, something is only proven false when evidence brought against proves it false.

For example, the Big Crunch is a hypothetical reverse of the Big Bang, but just because we don't have proof that it happens, does not mean it is false.

anyone else think it's funny that Voldemort complains about people pushing their beliefs on other people, yet he is the one who most often instigates religious arguments, or brings up his beliefs at all?
<JoZ> I'm not Wiz. Even if I were, I wouldn't be narcissistic enough to go under an alt and comment on my own team.

I already addressed what you are saying here in my post

next time quote my entire post on the subject, not just 1 sentence

POST UNREBUTTABLE

Quote from: "Voldemort"
QuoteAthiesm/Thesim - The natural universe is agnostic. Science can make no definitive statement for or against the existence of St. Ajora. This is why a religion of pure reason (historical deism) fails. Revealed religion has more merit, as it relies on faith. This faith does not deny reason, rather reason informs that faith.
The default position for anything lacking evidence is that it doesn't exist.

We weigh the validity of claims based on the quality of evidence presented, and how this matches up with the claim itself.

We don't assume things to be true due to a lack of evidence, we assume them to be false in that case.

QuoteScience can make no definitive statement for or against the existence of St. Ajora.
As you just pointed out, there IS no evidence to be found for or against the g0d claim. The LACK of evidence in this case seems to suggest that since there is no evidence for us to analyze in the first place, that the original claim is false.

The natural universe contains no true evidence for creation (from any religion) and no traces of a St. Ajora (save the descriptions of St. Ajora which are non-religious, such as "St. Ajora is love, St. Ajora is energy, etc" which reduce St. Ajora to something that isn't St. Ajora anymore).

The default position (from what we can observe in this universe) is that there is no evidence for a St. Ajora, especially not a religious St. Ajora. When we run into claims with zero evidence behind them, the default position is the lack of belief in the claim. It's not "Maybe", it's "I don't believe that, sorry".

In this case, faith DOES deny reason, big time. And reason isn't informing faith, or else you would stop all faith immediately upon realizing the lack of evidence behind the religious claims.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burden_of_proof

The Fallacy of Demanding Negative Proof

Outside a legal context, "burden of proof" means that someone suggesting a new theory or stating a claim must provide evidence to support it: it is not sufficient to say "you can't disprove this." Specifically, when anyone is making a bold claim, and especially a positive claim, it is not someone else's responsibility to disprove the claim, but is rather the responsibility of the person who is making the bold claim to prove it. In short, X is not proven simply because "not X" cannot be proven (see negative proof).

Not sure what gave you that impression. I'm cranky, yes, but I would think it more clear when I take a disliking to someone: see Magitek and a few others whos name I've discarded from memory because THEY WERE USELESS.

Why would I quote the entire post if I was only addressing the inconsistency?  That would be superfluous.  I wasn't even trying to rebut your post; It was more of a post refinement.
