I remember hearing about Sludge metal back in high school. I had to YouTube it to get a listen, and apparently both Down and Soilent Green bear this label, at least to an extent.

So I compared it to other, I guess older forms of sludge, including Black Flag and the Melvins.

I don't know what to make of it, actually. I can hear grunge, punk, modrock, and bits of industrial. What I don't hear is metal. If anything, the guitar licks from some of Black Flag's "work" imitates that of early Black Sabbath, but that isn't enough for them to bear such a label.

At any rate, here's my half-ass conclusion. The music is simple, the instruments all sound like shit, lyrics are... who knows, the vocals are embarassing, and the solos - when applicable - are poorly incorporated. Yup, kinda sounds like a PUNK subgenre to me.

As for changing up styles and whatnot, I don't have a problem with a band finding its "niche" over the course of a few albums. A ton of things can make this necessary, even. Recall how similar Megadeth and Metallica's styles are on their first albums. Well, that's because James and Dave essentially wrote the damn music together.

But the ridiculous amount of bands leaning more and more toward mainstream truly pisses me off. If you think about it, Marilyn Manson isn't even metal anymore. The music has become watered-down, rock-structured piss with lyrics a 4-year-old can write and vocals a 4-month-old can sing.

This is exactly why I became a pretentious "true metal" asshole.

Haha, im glad someoen can agree with me on the sludge genre.

Also, mainstream is just something we have to deal with, or ignore for that matter...

We can always wait for the occassional original metal band, "buy" the first few albums, until they to, go mainstream...

Even Disturbed is tweaking their vocals. tehn thousand fists was the last completly original album i think we will see from those guys.

All good points, fellows.

I'm not fond of most of the bands mentioned in your discussion, so I can't really add much else.

"This is exactly why I became a pretentious "true metal" asshole" - spoonman

^ This!

Being a metalhead is all about recognizing the difference between true metal and mall metal. Nevermind the different genres; it's all about knowing which "lolmetal" groups can be heard while strolling past Hot Topic, and which METAL groups can own your face and the various faces of others.

By the way, I said POST SOME METAL!!

This band is kind of in a genre of it's own, but it can be classified as metal by some. It is one of my favorite bands, actually.

Thanks for the bump, and sorry for taking so long to reply, I was not sober last night and didn't feel like reading so much ^^;

I think pretty much anything that was on my mind has been said already.

About five years ago, I got my sister into Cradle of Filth as some of you have gotten your siblings into our music. After she passed away, my mom and I had to fight for the Cradle of Filth shirts that she had (my mom likes them almost as much as I do, hell she's even gone with me to see them my first time going).

I don't know if you guys would consider Korn to be 'metal' but I remember when they were good, now it sounds as though they have Leukemia or something, and I think it is starting to effect Cradle of Filth (as mentioned), the last CD I was able to thoroughly enjoy was Nymphetamine. Thornography had a few songs that I liked, and the latest album I just couldn't get into (with the exception of the song 'The 13th Cesar'). I mean, I tried... but it just isn't the Cradle I remember.

On a side note about this band, have you ever heard of Sara Jezebel Deva's band Angtoria? They're not the best (However, I do like them more than old Nightwish), but I liked the album they released, here is their biggest song on the album:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olFchpRcgao

I have always loved her voice, and she really does a good job on the vocals.

I know people say that they don't listen to metal for the screaming, but I think it gives the genre its own charm, and it adds that much flare when you too are screaming/moshing/body surfing. But also as mentioned, the lyrics are intelligent... I mean, c'mon, who else have you heard use words like 'inquisitive' 'bastion' 'monastic' and 'exhuming'? You better believe that people like Kanye West probably has never heard these words (and what the hell was up with him mutilating Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger by Daft Punk, that was a travesty, but that is for a different topic).

Also, not too many people may know this but I find moshing to be a form of stress relief, after the show I went to this past weekend, it got me out of a state of depression (not emo, but legitimate depression). Nothing feels better than getting a bloody nose while screaming at the top of your lungs.

If you all have a hard time finding various good Metal music like I do, I find an easy means as to doing so by listening to Pandora, they know what to do (again, another topic).

Um.. I don't think anything else comes to mind at the current moment, I'll probably have more input with more replies or probably within an hour >.>;

Here's a pic of me outside of a show a while back...

^ thats one sexy emo <3

lol.

Sorry to hear about your sisters passing, but its awesome you had to fight your mom for a CoF shirt. my mom would most likely burn one given the chance.

The screaming gives metal a charm, and its sort of like a trial...you have to get past not understanding lyrics the first time you hear a song to enjoy the music behind it... and then the screaming just fits teh whole song together. its like picasso's approach to art. but alot more enjoyable.

Pandora FTW :) its how i found dragonforce before guitar hero made it popular.

On a side note, kanye west isnt exactly known for his originality...he couldve done a better song though, i can name two others her murdered to...

Metal does seem ot have the highest form of vocabulary. hell half the words in mine come from listening to metal (English IV taught me nothing!(senior english))

in 6th grade i knew what malevolence meant before anyone else. thanks Megadeath!

Depression comes and goes. I'm feeling much better now. It was more so from the stress of debt and some ex drama.

I'm going to come into this topic swinging. I love Metal, a lot. My favorite genres of metal are Melodic Death Metal, Deathcore, Power Metal, and Death Metal. I'm not really into black metal, but I can see the allure of it.

Anyway, what I like most about metal is the thumping groove of the bass/drums combined with the speed and awesome of the guitar work. I prefer my metal to have a melody, though if it has a really good beat that I can headbang to and a good mix, I don't miss the melody that much. I think that the allure of metal is that it is extremely empowering. Nothing is better than callin' someone a motherfucker and throwin' the devil horns. Nothing.

I listen to a lot of metal, and I'm always out for new recommendations. I'd say that my current favorite metal bands are

All That Remains (Deathcore/Metalcore)
Children of Bodom(Melodeath)
Avantasia(Power Metal of the gods)

How do you feel about God Forbid?

I was listening to them last year, but I lost all their music when I forgot to back up my files before reformatting...

Also, is anyone familiar with the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice? Well, there is this one band named Theater Les Vampires after the theater that Lestat purchased... their older music sounds pretty bad ass, but their new stuff reminds me of Nightwish :(

[edit]

You know what I mean by that band, I didn't realize that doG backwards would automatically change  to 'St. Ajora'.

I picked up Gone Forever by the band you mentioned, and I think it's pretty okay, but it's not my favorite style of metal. I prefer stuff more along the lines of Children of Bodom, Arch Enemy, Carcass (not the grindcore crap), and In Flames. Either that, or stuff like Bury Your Dead and Devildriver. There are a few bands that straddle the middle ground, and I think God Forbid fall into that, and it's not quite heavy enough for me to headbang to like Bury Your Dead and Devildriver, and it's not quite melodic enough for me to listen to like I listen to Bodom and Carcass and the like. So I kinda skip it over. It's okay, but it's one of my less favorite styles of metal.

So yeah, that's my philosophy about metal. It's either got to be really melodic, like Bodom or In Flames, or it's gotta be really heavy and have a really strong pounding beat, like Bury Your Dead. Either way, I really really prefer my metal tight and sharp like a razor blade, rather than flabby. That's one of the reason I love Bodom so much, is because they're melodic, and their albums are mastered so asshole tight, and their guitar tone is tight and sharp, and they play really clean, as opposed to, say, Shadows Fall, whose guitar tone is too loose and their instruments don't come through very well, and so I like them less. Also why I like Devildriver, is because the voice comes out so clear above the guitar, and the guitar tracks are clear from the drums, and all the elements of the song are clear(well, as clear as metal is).

Nothing against dense arrangements, and I actually love them a lot, but I need to be able hear the space between the instruments. I guess that's why I don't really like punk or black metal, as those genres (in my experience) tend to be mastered rather "sludgily."

I had heard that SJD started Angtoria, but I hadn't checked it out yet.

That one was alright, but I think Sara sings soprano so well that it's almost a shame to hear her singing in a "normal" way. I feel the same way about Simone Simmons of Epica. Her operatic voice is as fucking gorgeous as she is, but too many Epica songs have her "watered down" in her vocal range.

Speaking of which, if I could stray from metal for a moment..

Fans of soprano singers like Sara, Simone, Vibeke, Tarja, etc absolutely HAVE TO HAVE TO HAVE TO check out Emma Shapplin. She's a personal G.O.D.D.E.S.S. of mine. I linked a video of her in the Techno topic, even though her music is not really techno, per se. I'll go ahead and link a handful here now, actually:
