Use of ePSXe before 2.0 is highly discouraged. Mednafen, RetroArch, and Duckstation are recommended for playing/testing, pSX is recommended for debugging.

specifically this part made it work:
Attempt #2 - CPU Overclocking
The latest version of ePSXe is known to have black screen issues. You can fix this by going to Options > CPU overclocking > x1. Still get a black screen? Try the next attempt.
