Title: Data collection of Season 1
Post by: Fosil on July 03, 2012, 12:35:29 am
Herein I gathered tallies of jobs/items/abilities used in nearly all of the teams from the MemCard Generator spreadsheet. (It is far from fully accurate-it may not include all. However, the data still stands for what its worth.)
This outlines the best, and thus, the most popular. You could say my goal in this is to encourage the buffing of low-popularity items/jobs/skillsets so that the best aren't quite the best anymore. Easier said than done, I know--balancing is tricky business.
Collection Highlights (In order of most to least. See if you can guess the best! Full lists & counts in spoilers below) Top 5 primary jobs: Archer, Scholar, Ninja, Bard, Monk Top 5 secondary skillsets: Item, White Magic, Draw Out, Ninjitsu, Punch Art Top 5 reactions: Auto Potion, Damage Split, MA Save, Absorb MP, PA Save Top 5 support: Magic Attack UP, Attack UP, Short Charge, Defense UP, Throw Item Top 5 movement: Move-HP Up, Move-MP Up, Move+1, Fly, Teleport Top weapons of each type: Platina Dagger, Hidden Knife, Rune Blade, Defender, Murasame, Battle Axe, Faith Rod, Wizard Staff, Scorpion Tail, Romanda Gun, Gastrafitis, Mythril Bow, Bloody Strings, Battle Dict, Dragon Whisker, Ivory Rod, H Bag, Persia Top 5 shields: Genji Shield, Venetian Shield, Aegis Shield, Kaiser Plate, Escutcheon II Top headgear of each type: Diamond Helmet, Golden Hairpin, Ribbon Top bodygear of each type: Reflect Mail, Black Costume, Linen Robe Top accessory of each type: Sprint Shoes, Magic Gauntlet, Angel Ring, 108 Gems, Vanish Mantle, Chantage
Suffice to say, it is sad when so many items are neglected. Next step: suggestions for improvement? How about it, Arena-masters? :)

Effort is much appreciated. However, you're a bit late - within the Arena S1 thread several people have collected data much like you have, and the changes for the new version have more or less been done (check the Stats/Ability discussion thread for details).
Also, and I guess this is my main gripe, is that most popular =/= best. I'm not sure that Archer is one of the top 5 jobs. It's good, sure, but not super amazing (at least IMO). Top 5 Movement isn't really relevant since there aren't many movement abilities in Arena. That said, those 5 movements are the best movements, so no complaining in the accuracy department, haha.
Skillsets aren't the whole story, either. Ninjitsu, for example, is primarily used for some combination of Kagesougi, Shuriken, and the -tons. There are still bad/unused skills in Ninjitsu, like Doku no Kyoukai. There should probably be more focus on individual skills, like Masamune in DO, Mimic Daravon in Talk Skill, Raise 2 in WM, etc. Gaignun (I think) noted how like ~90% of the Draw Out users in the tournament had Masamune. That's a good sign that something's wrong.
More notably, however, is that by your definition, Romanda Gun is the best gun, and Murasame is the best katana. I am very certain that no one would agree with these statements. The magic guns are far more deadly than Romanda, and Murasame does... very little. As far as I'm concerned, it's just +1 MA since you can't hurt the opponent with it. Murasame is probably one of the worst katanas for exactly that reason.
A better set of data would be what the top 5-10 teams were using, since those teams have proved themselves to be strong. I don't think we'll be seeing any Romanda Guns or Murasames in the top 5-10, for example.
The other thing to keep in mind is that a new version will be out soon, with lots (and I mean lots) of exciting changes. Things will be very different. Tons of new items, and indeed weaker items/skills have been buffed, along with some appropriate nerfs (Masamune, Magic Guns).

I had heard about the new patch for arena--but last I checked, I didn't see much in terms of changes. Nor did I think things were being finalized just yet. Maybe I was just looking in the wrong place.
And perhaps I was full of it for saying popular = best. I should have just let the numbers do the talking. :)
Thank you for pointing that out, though. Now that I see the changes coming, I'm quite pleased!
