Well it's fine if you don't know a darn thing. We try to make programs as user friendly as possible.
The only problem is that most information here is a mess. By that, I mean we discover stuff and post in some topic, but we don't have any topic that lists everything.

I don't know... you should try keeping the URL of the picture and try viewing it after changing your avatar.
Concerning FFT avatars:
PNG = no quality lost, very little filesize
GIF = no quality lost, little filesize
JPEG = quality lost depending on compression, big to huge filesize.
I'm starting to be picky about such things ahahah.
Really use PNG or GIF if you can; as long as you don't use mspaint.
