Title: New knight for my Classics Edition hack.
Post by: Vanya on July 21, 2008, 12:51:15 am
Here's a sample of my new knight for my Classics patch:

Knight Classic v0.1
(http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh189/koala_knight/Sample-MaleKnightClassic.png)

Delita shouldn't be the only one with cool armor. I'm thinking of using the Onion Knight's helmet as a base for this dude's headgear. What do you guys think?

As always your revisions are envious, hehe. Cannot wait till completion!

Thanks! =)
I'll post updates as more of him gets done. Do you think I should add the helmet?

A helmet would certainly look interesting on a Knight... to say the least.

Give it a spiked helmer with a brown cape with the gathered *Fabric*
behind his head make it a bear head and you have a viking XD

The cape might be a little too white, but it looks good. I would definitely recommend trying out a helmet to see how it turns out. Oh and that stupid little cowl/hump on the capes always drives me nuts, but I don't know what you want to do with it.

That's an interesting idea! I might just look into it some time. =)

Thanks a lot guys! I really appreciate the encouragement! I will, of course, be submitting it to the main site. I'll post it here first, too. =)

Thank you for the CC, dude.
I was thinking that while i was editing the palette. I was hesitant to change it for two reasons. The first thing is that that color is shared with the eyes. The second is that since the cloak shares colors with the armor I wanted them to be distinctive from each other.
I never really minded the cowl. I guess it just makes sense to me for it to be there. I'm open to experimentation, so I'll try removing. I'll post a preview along with some alternate palette work. I'd like to have so that cloak can be recolored on it's own without affecting the armor. =)

I think the cowl is fine (definitely doesn't look as funny as the male priest's cowl).  However, if you are planning on adding a helmet it would be out of place.  There's really no practical use for a cowl then because it won't fit over the helmet.

Not entirely true. depends on the size of the cowl. Besides, the helmet won't be nearly as big as any of the others in the game.

Here is the helmeted knight:

See? Smaller helmet. I think the face thingy might be too bright. What do you guys think?

Here's a new modification:

Third version:

Slightly different. I removed some of the points, but it animates better this way. should I leave them or put them back?

Final?:

Now with chest armor! =)

Ah wow that looks real good. I would maybe see what it looks like without the helmet ring going around the back. It looks good as is though too.

All the angles for the helmet look perfect except for the Front Side very. And by not perfect I mean maybe just change it by a few pixels. On the left side (from our view) just make it level out a bit longer before slooping down to make it look just barely wider. This is a super knickpicky thing that doesn't even need to be done if you don't care. I only mention it because the front side view is pretty much the most important, and if you want to add a little movement to the helment during walking animations it will be important to get it just right.

On the front view maybe take a pixel or two off the top of the cape so his head doesn't look so squashed.

I hope I don't sound overly critical, I just am really liking this sprite and it is good to get all these ideas out there before you do more of the frames.

The helmet is so good, you could try messing with his body armor and cape to make him even more differentiated from the knight.

i would actually like to see the completion of that v0.1 sprite you've got there

(of course i want to see the helmet one too, but id like to use the really white one with the blonde hair for random encounters of generic holy knights)

You're not being too critical at all. I appreciate the criticism.
Anyway, about the Front Side, I'll probably leave it because that is how the original artist did it. I *may* try mod'ing it, but I think it's good enough.

And about the cape in the front view... Good eye! I added some extra pixels. I didn't like it and was going to remove them, but I forgot.

Thanks for the input! =)

I was thinking that as I was posting the helmeted one. I'll do them both, but the newer one will take priority since I'm going to use it in my hack. I'm glad you like them! =)

I updated the helmeted knight post with a new modification. Feedback, plz! =)

Looks good, the smaller helmet really fits a normal knight, the enlarged helm, in retrospect looks a little odd.

The removale of the band around the back looks much better.

Bringing down the cape for the front view was good, you might even be able to get away with one more pixel down, but it might be too much.

The front side view adjustments are actually on the opposite side of the visor that I was talking about. But it actually still looks better. So I think it is good to go.

Any other adjustments I didn't notice?

I just did some minor shifting of some pixels here and there. I did another update. It just has some more minor adjustments. I'll post it tomorrow.

OK, the last edit is up. i adjusted some elements to make the animation more fluid and I adjusted the shading on the helmet some more. What do you guys think?

Post by: Zozma on July 22, 2008, 06:08:52 pm
yo Vanya, since you're like the best at these enhanced knight classes.. perhaps you could lend me a hand on this one... my next project is creating a sprite for Miluda... my idea is simple id like her to have the female knight sprite but without the cape... but making the skirt for the backside seems complicated... what do you think?
Title:
Post by: Vanya on July 22, 2008, 07:28:38 pm
I could give it a shot. I'll look into it and let you know.
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on July 22, 2008, 07:35:09 pm
I think the helmet is perfect now. Totally ready to move on to more animation frames unless you have a desire to change up the armor or cape. Like someone else said elsewhere, the cape for the Onion Knight is unique. Plus it would show off the badass armor better.

But your current design is good too. The helmet is just so unique it would be awesome if you could make the rest of it totally new too. The game is in definite need of a heavily armored unit.
Title:
Post by: Vanya on July 22, 2008, 07:46:23 pm
Thanks. For my purposes, the armor and cape is good. I will, however, do a version with the Onion Knight cape just because I agree that it would look good. As for heavy armor, I might add a mod of the original knight's breast plate to it.
Title:
Post by: Cheetah on July 22, 2008, 07:58:35 pm
Maybe look at the Dragoon's and the Shrine Knight armors too for inspiration.
Title:
Post by: Vanya on July 22, 2008, 08:54:50 pm
That's a good idea.
I'm planing on using Meliadoul as a base for the female Knight. So I'll definitely be examining the Shrine Knights.

Alrighty! I posted the new version with breastplate adapted fromthe dragon knight. How is it?
Title:
Post by: Kenshin72 on July 23, 2008, 02:14:41 am
I like the third one best.
The breastplate looks good, I just don't like it.

Keep up the good work Big V!

Yeah yeah, I'm liking it. Less cape more armor!

I still like your original one. That with the helmet would be pretty awesome too. Or maybe just the helmeted one with a white cape. Whichever is easier
Title:
Post by: Vanya on July 23, 2008, 10:40:30 am
OK, cool. What I'll do is use the latest one for my hack and I'll work on alternate versions for general public use. When they're done I'll post them here and submit them to the main site as well. =)
Title:
Post by: Zozma on July 23, 2008, 03:14:26 pm
i like the second or first one, (i still like the white knight that you first posted as well..)
Title:
Post by: VincentCraven on July 23, 2008, 04:53:09 pm
I'd have to say I like the third version the best too.  I just don't think the chestplate gels well with the bottom of the shirt.

Though I must say, the helmet is awesome.  As long as you make a final version with a helmet, I'll be very pleased. I'll replace the original Knight with whatever you end up using, even if it is just a finish of the first version. Knights need armor. NO EXCUSES
Title:
Post by: Vanya on July 23, 2008, 05:11:34 pm
The reason I'm hesitant about the chest armor is that examining the type of armor that Delita uses I realize that he has chest armor. Often plate armor of this type was worn with a tunic covering the breastplate. I think I'll keep the minor edits I made to the rest of the sprite and lose the breastplate. If anyone really wants to have a more pronounced breastplate they can add it pretty easily. Sorry, Cheetah.

So I'll be releasing 2 versions. The one with the helmet is my priority, and afterwards I'll complete the one with the white cape.

Oh. So THAT's what all the armored specials are wearing: a tunic!

No offense or anything but the Chest Armor Knight looks a little pregnant.

I actually have him on hold while I work out the Medic sprite first. I'll start on him again after I revise his skill set and make the appropriate text changes for the Medic and the him.

By the time I'm done I'll have my new Knight and a generic Paladin. Rest assured that I've not abandoned this part of my project. =)

Here's my sprite itinerary:
1) Halloween Sprite
2) Scholar
3) Medic
4) New Knight (I'll do the generic paladin at the same time!)
5) Freelancer

If there's an urgent need, I'll move the new Knight up towards the top of the list.
