Title: What is your Crowning Moment of Awesome?
Post by: DaveSW on November 03, 2010, 02:19:59 pm
Just wanting to get to know the people here a little better, so I have a question to everyone?

What is your Crowning Moment of Awesome?  In other words, what have you done in your life that you are proud of, that sets you apart from others?  Whether it be something mundane, or something no one else could claim, as long as it is awesome, I would like to hear it.

Back when I was really into the gym, I deadlifted 250 kg (550 lbs) for 3 reps
(http://www.projectswole.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/how-to-deadlift.jpg)
I'm one of the guys responsible for Tylenol (the company) Miami, New York and LA's entire 2010-2012 campaign strategy (this has more to do with career than hobbies)

I got rank14 grand marshal on WoW's Warsong PVP server under the old PVP system In that server, under that system, that took 2 months of pvp grinding arena 15+ hrs a day every day to move up towards R14.

I won 5,000 dollars in a milwaukee halo2 tourney during my first yr of college (I guess that's not that big but man did it feel good)

I don't want to put you down Arch, I am "into the gym" as well, I go every other day with my brother and train, for about 2 hours each time (maybe thats not enough?) but I never got the point at all of the dead weight lifting. What does it do to your muscles?? Right now we are still doing measily lifting, lol, but we're getting there. This one machine I sorta mastered, the leg push one, it has a maximum of 214 kg, which we both could strangely do from day 1...

sounds like a mega troll post, but I'll bite

QuoteRight now we are still doing measily lifting, lol, but we're getting there.

the guys who deadlift heavy and properly are always going to be way ahead of you, if not in size then most definitely in strength

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadlift (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadlift)
It is one of the three gauges of powerlifting, and is an excellent exercise for overall body development if done properly.
The deadlift is a compound movement that works grip strength with the erector spinae, gluteus maximus, adductor magnus, hamstrings, and quadriceps serving as the primary muscles. The remaining muscles are involved in stability control. It is, in a sense, the purest test of strength because it is one of the few lifts of dead weight (weight lying on the ground). In most other lifts there is an eccentric (lowering the weight) phase followed by the concentric (lifting the weight) phase; the deadlift is just a concentric movement.

you're not putting me down, you're putting yourself down

you're the gym novice here :)

also there's a difference between being "into the gym" and "knowing what you're doing in the gym that will lead to effective progression and physical development"

huge difference between the two

that's not strange at all, and your leg press machine has an extremely low max if it's set to 214 kg. you must belong to a health club or one of the simpler gyms

try squatting the same weight and see how you do

I wasn't trying to troll, and you're right, I'm in a simpler gym. I like the "purest test of strength" concept. I should try this next time I go to the gym, I probably can't do shit yet, lol.

Jon educate yourself before you go and start doing power lifting on your own. They are dangerous and complicated lifts where your posture and technique is very important for not injuring yourself. I would recommend watching some instructional youtube vids or asking some of the personal trainers at your gym for quick pointers. I learned how to lift properly during high school through weight lifting class, and I'm sure Voldemort learned through sports or some similar situation. Like Voldemort said there is a big difference between messing around with free weights and actually knowing how to do a balanced workout routine.

My best lift was always bench press. My life time weight lifting goal has always been to get up to 300 lbs, but it is doubtful I will ever reach it. When I was doing regular lifting at school when I was 16 I got to a max of doing 265 lbs a few times. However, I have never seriously lifted weights since and I doubt I could do much more than 200 if that.

As far as other life achievements are concerned I still have a long ways to go in my education before I will be reaching major goals.

Oh I have one dumb one though. I nearly killed myself by drinking 3 gallons of water over the course of 2 hours for a college dorm competition.

Wow, 3 gallons in 2 hours is dangerous? How big are you?  I guess the only thing awesome about me is that I am almost 7 feet tall...  Oh, and I fought a SWAT team when I was 16...

I lost. (Never bring a knife to a gun fight).

Gave a "C-section" to a buttermilk racer snake that had died trying to spit out its eggs.  So the mother was already dead; I just spliced her open with a scalpel and watched over the eggs for a good month+ until I had to go back to college.  Dunno if they ever hatched :(.

Also caught small alligators with my bare hands.  That's pretty fun.  Just paddle up beside em slowly and grab quickly.

Got first place at a Texas Hold Em tournment at my college; no cash prize but I won a large set of some very kickass chips.

Grew up as an oil field brat so lived for four years in nigeria and got to visit a lot of other various places -- been to four countries in africa, most of western europe, and brazil.  Stateside I've just been within a two-state radius of Texas plus a roadtrip to california.

QuoteI got rank14 grand marshal on WoW

I got to Centurion.  Which is... *looks up* rank 9 (knight-champion for alliance scum).  I saw the spiked mountain I'd have to climb to advance farther than that and just let honor decay settle in.

I'm just a bit over 6 foot and around 200 lbs. It was a very stupid thing to do. Everyone else who drank even close to as much as I did ended up puking. Instead I just had to take the biggest piss of my life, which no one else seemed to need to do for some reason. I had a splitting headache, my joints felt loose, and I felt like I had been soaking in a tub but my skin wasn't wrinkly. There are a number of news stories of people dieing doing the exact same thing I did.

QuoteWow, 3 gallons in 2 hours is dangerous?

3 gallons of water isn't the problem, it's the amount of time he drank them in.

I'm a black belt in Tae kwan Do, almost have a black belt in Kumdo, I once chugged a gallon of gatorade for $18 and some cents (I didn't know it was that much at the time, and it was originally supposed to be $5, but people kept tossing money on the table), and i ended up puking about 10 minutes later. Also, I ate a small bowlful of chopped onions for a dollar ^_^

can't really think of anything else at the moment.

Adderall can really mess someone up. It can even make someone think that attacking a SWAT team with a pair of kitchen knives is a good idea. Protip: It isn't.
