Title: Game Design... probing the waters.
Post by: pvrhye on October 24, 2010, 02:20:15 pm
So I've been brainstorming a game idea.  It's another strategy RPG, although distinctly different than the major contenders.  I don't anticipate trying to con anyone else into getting in on the action, so I'm going to have to do this from the ground up.

The game design is the simple part (if this were a pen and paper game it'd be playable right now if you cared to do so with a calculator at hand and go through a lot of tedious math).  It's the other stuff like getting characters to walk around under the game's rules and actually code the thing that I don't know how to do.

I'm told there are existing engines with simplified code that may be satisfactory.  I also have a BFA, so my basic art skills are solid enough that I feel I could pick up 3D art well enough for my low-poly needs.  That's a ton of work, but it doesn't sound impossible yet, so can anyone think of some horrendous detail I've omitted that would bite me in the rear?

For the sake of simplicity I'd probably make it for the computer, although the idea of one day getting it onto PSN or Live does appeal to me greatly (I figure with a fun to play mock-up I make be able to attract more talent to the operation to soften the edges)

Hmmm, simplified game engine? Did you try checking out www.byond.com (http://www.byond.com) ? Thats where I learned to basic code games...

It could work, but none of the examples seem to handle 3-d.

Thats right. No 3d, only the illusion 3d of isometrics, like in games such as FFTA. It can in theory do 3d, but you would have to code that yourself.

Hmm, I'm really more interested in modeling than spriting.
