Title: My first portrait
Post by: h0ndman2 on August 12, 2010, 01:10:26 pm
I made my first Portrait ever on Ms Paint, and Im quite happy with it. Of course, its not the best, but hey, its my first one! =] It is Squall Leonhart from FFVIII.

Overall flatness, outlining, too dark scar. It is not anything strange you did these mistakes for your first time ofcourse, everyone did it at first. I suggest using more part from other sprites(for example, copy Gaffy's fur instead of this custom made). Besides, there are already two port of Squall, and one is awesome, try something else.

Yeah, I didnt really know who to do, and I like squall the way Squall looks, so...
Where can I find the other 2?
I didnt really used a lot of sprites, most of it is done by myself.

Any ideas for a next portrait? I want a character from FFI - FFX, and a playable one would be the coolest.

Overall I think you have the shapes down right, just need to work on the coloring/shading.

The shoulders especially look really cartoony and flat.

Ideas for ports eh, I can't help you, check spriting request section and try doing some. Other two Squall ports can be found on Seushiro profile, and Chronos Agami. Seu have the better one.

Yea, I must say, both of them are better than mine. I'll fix the shoulders sometime. For my next sprite, how about FFVI's Edgar Figaro? I  dont think anyone made him yet. Or Paladin Cecil from FFIV?

Paladin Cecil is currently beign created by Smash, and there is slight chance anyone will do better version than his, but Smash postponed his work for now because of college. I suggest doing some Dark Knight Cecil instead.

Dark Knight Cecil has an absolutely Amazing picture by Curu from a time long past. I suggest Edgar

I'll start with Edgar, we'll see what happens after that. Someone allready did Dark Knight Cecil, I'm not sure, I think it was Zozma. I saw it on youtube.

At the moment Im more busy with Portriats.
This is what I have created now, Edgar from FFVI, and Squall from FFVIII:

Too cartoonish colors, always take colors from other FFT portraits, the colors you used now are from FF6 Edgar port. Collar is completely wrong, too linear, look at other collars in FFT to get the idea, again there ae outlining problems. Overall Edgar looks cartonish. I told you about Squall already.

Ah I forgot Curu's portrait. It wasn't Zozma, it was CidIII, but it could use reworking, I will try if I find time.

You cant use colors from other sprites? Oka, thanks for the tip. I had as you can see, lots of trouble with his hair. =/

Using colors from sprites on portraits is a wrong move, I tried it too. Just use existing palettes from other FFT ports.

okay, I did the coloring. I must say, this looks better, but the other colors looked more happy.

colors are better, but the collar, hair, are looking terrible TBH. Use some fitting portrait that will work as base, and edit it from there, this looks like it is from scratch, bad move. Fully rework this.

The Collar? I kind of liked it. =P WEll Im very bad at judging my own work, so you ust be right. I'll try Edgar again sometime.

Collar is completely not FFT style, try looking in ShiShi at other ports and also visit Custom Sprites section on main page, you can get many ideas for good hair and collar.

changed a bit of Squalls shadow, and increased the size of his collar and lighter scar.

Scar looks better, but two things, hair is outlined(outlining is that black line around collar for example), and browns are too dark when compared to skin, that fur is completely out, just use Gaffgarion's fur.

You are working on a 64x96 canvas. FFT's portrait canvas measures 32x48.

Here, I resized it for you:

You should pixel at x1 size at all times. Once you finish, then you can upload the end result at x2 or x3 for people to look closely. Never modify at higher resolutions, as it's unessesary and does not fit FFT.

Really? Thanks Smash. But I really sucj with the sprites, so I dont even know Iv Ill put it in the game. Well maybe someone else would like to use it. Kagebunji, I'll fix Squall further tomarrow.

I think it was mentioned before but you don't really need to work on a squall port because a good one already exists. and edgar? well, i have to agree that you should totally re-do it. id suggest cut/pasting parts of other hair/face/collar etc in order to avoid as much "from scratch" as possible...

Haha, your Edgar made me laugh out loud to be honest. Don't take it wrong or get discouraged, but it sucks. It looks like some weird chibi version of Edgar. Its disgusting man! Start over please. And sorry if I insulted you in any way, don't put me on your black list. Squall is actually looking okay, but like Kage said, (and listen to Kage, Zozma and Smash, they are always right) use Gaffgarions shoulder fur, then change that slightly if you are not happy with it. Also the very top of his head looks a bit cone like, just make it a bit rounder and the hair will look a lot better. I actually like the scars color, but yeah maybe change that a bit too. Don't give up, just keep practicing, I think thats the best way to get better and quicker at getting better, if that makes sense >_>

o_O That didnt really make me feel any better. Ill change Squall later, and I might try Edgar later as well, Im not sure since I think long hair is hard to make. I'll keep practesing, and post the ones I didnt really do good as well so I can get advice on what Iv done wrong.

Remember to use references everytime. Imitating their features will get you better and better.
Also, check out my (Wip) portrait tutorial thread for important info on FFT face anatomy, there's goods there you might find useful.

And yeah I fully agree, long hair is a bitch.

I added the other collar to squall, but with my own colors, this is it now.
And Smash, Im happy that even someone your rank has trouble with long hair, it makes me feel a bit less noob. xD

Hey, thats better! I wish I could do portraits, but I am really bad at them, because see how the hair sorta makes a cone shape? Try to smooth it out into a more rounded version. Maybe I will try doing it, but it probably will come out worse.

Edit: Toldja I was bad, but this is what I mean by more rounded hair, this is just an idea. I changed the scar to a bit more bloody, and mouth. Hmm, the mouth reminds me of Mav's icon on here. I can't remember a time in FF8 where Squall was even close to smiling.

I wouldnt like to call that I smile. I think your looks a bit to angry. And Squall does smile, just not much. :P And his hair is I dunno, strange.... C'mon guys, USE EXISTING PALETTES! This is the most basic thing in spriting. And remeber to post 2x size port too, so we could examine the details more.
