hai guize
Running a rushjob of a team here. Didn't even get around to nagging FFM to do an initial test run and I was constrained for time to do a test run myself as I was quite literally a last minute filler.
glhf and all that jazz.
Also, I think I woke up before FFM so take that!

Since everybody is announcing what they have, I decided up update the first post with the teams. If you want, you can check teams for errors. Also, remember, balance discussion SHOULD go in the respective threads. If something doesn't fit in those threads, make your own. This one should be casual discussion only.

@Barren/Damned match:
Impressive setup with 3x samu + mime, but Barren just had the staying power. But impressive basic skill samu who failed to Heal himself from poison and died in the corner hasting himself.

Yeah, Skip. Like I just said on Youtube, I really made this team only as a semi-joke to see how much it screwed up the AI to have constant access to Masamune and Kiyomori. Looks like they whore it even more than I thought. No surprise there....
*writes down notes*
Speaking of notes, Poison Bow looks as OP as I thought it was going to be.
Quote from: "philsov"Impressive setup with 3x samu + mime, but Barren just had the staying power. But impressive basic skill samu who failed to Heal himself from poison and died in the corner hasting himself.
It would appear that in any medium Kaname Tousen is a failure. No surprise there.
Sigh, Kubo Tite fails me again. GG Barren. I think I could have easily wond if Odin didn't hit Sousuke and if half of my guys had actually, you know, attacked. But, hey, AI tournament with a team I didn't expect to be good.

and this is the good side of doing swiss rounds, cause I think baity's team didn't show a lot of it's potential. Especially the monk, who couldn't go for softer units.
Title: Re: First Beta FFT Arena Tournament
Post by: The Damned on July 19, 2010, 11:18:54 pm
Yeah, Pride. You had pretty much won as soon as the Berserked Monk bottlenecked.
Also, wow, I think of all the things on your team, I'm most impressed that someone's actually not only putting Distribute to use, but to good use; it's almost a shame that Lore will probably die.... We'll see how it fairs if the Monk is capable of getting smacked in the face, though.

it just goes to show you that inflicting poison while crossbow damage can be very effective. my lancer basically served as a road block pretty much to keep them away from my support while my summoner got a lucky death proc with odin (nice idea FFMaster btw, bringing back old school odin). My knight did very well in this match

It prevents their Nameless Dances from failing more often, unless I'm mistaken about how other statuses stack over Sleep. (which is to say, they don't)
Title: Re: First Beta FFT Arena Tournament
Post by: philsov on July 20, 2010, 01:10:06 pm
its more that sleeping units are immune to dance effects.
But even in the opening round one of my dancers literally chose to wait and then attack the squire instead of start up a dance. Weiiird.
Title: Re: First Beta FFT Arena Tournament
Post by: logus on July 20, 2010, 04:44:29 pm
talk about weird... squire with 4 move keeps doing DO at his corner instead of shooting people for that double shot. supporters with gun seem to like shooting instead of, you know, supporting (remedy/esuna were there, they just weren't used). Draw Out wizard did exactly what she was meant to do cause I limited her skillset... should've done this to the rest of them, I just wasn't aware guns would be a factor. Supportive Draw Out did prove to be a huge factor in previous beta tourney, but I completely forgot about that!

Team "Cursed with Awesome" fighting what might as well be termed Team "Blessed With Suck" will doubtless be a curbstomp battle. Well, at least we know that Masamune makes the computer completely stupid. That's valuable knowledge.

In the defense of AI's stupidity over certain spells like Masamune (Arena's rendition not vanilla), If you have Random status, especially if it is a buff with manipulated flags or Haste, make sure you flag Random Hits or the AI will think it is 100% both statuses (which gives it a higher priority boost than normal). Especially in the case of Regen, where if it is the AI's only healing option, it would try to use it. Regen is higher priority than Haste when allies are in low HP condition. The Random Hits flag while shifts the probabilities randomly, however, it tells the AI to check for random variables such as Random Panel and Random Status.

Quotemake sure you flag Random Hits
Wouldn't that also result in sporadic at best use?
But, that certainly does describe my last match -- nameless dance without random flags was acted upon first, and then the rest of my team of dancers moved and did absolutely nothing probably thinking everyone else would be effectively dead at 100%?
Title: Re: First Beta FFT Arena Tournament
Post by: The Damned on July 22, 2010, 11:07:07 am
Sporadic use is better than using it ad nauseum.
Also, I'm pretty sure your Dancers' interaction was largely because Death Sentence makes the AI completely stupid, even more dumb than Confusion does. And considering that's your wincon....

This certainly explains why Masamune would be whored so much. I guess I just assumed that Random flag was on already. This is not the thread to ask in though.

Ah, I had thought you meant towards the end of that match since it happened at the end of the last match as well.. I misunderstood.
However, as you said, Nameless Dance doesn't inflict any "KO" statuses, despite Frog often being as good as a KO. Additionally, at the beginning of your first match, your first dancer moved to Nameless Dance and then other Nameless Dancer moved and did nothing followed by the two Last Dancers activating that ability.
Even if it's not Random and counting Confusion as a pseudo-KO (even though your Dancers have been rather zealous about knocking people out of Confusion, which is even stranger), that doesn't really explain the above conflict.
Hmm....

well tbh I'm going be to calling for a nerf to nameless and/or last song in some form or fashion by the end of this tourney, so the resulting nameless might not have this same conflict. It'll take some toying with

I'm assuming that "song" is supposed to be "dance" considering that no one is even using a Bard (surprisingly).
Although I wouldn't be surprised if Nameless Song and Last Song should need a nerf too considering.

Hijacking FFM's future announcement of videos for the time being. I'm also going to be throwing the one-off prediction that FFM hasn't had time to even rename / add in a half-description. Probably due to external circumstances. Anyway:

With those three matches done, I guess that means my doom is next.
Oh well. FFMaster has good taste in music, so doom set to Chrono Trigger music or some such won't be so bad.

Melancthon vs Kaz (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJi6pH5_vyE)
Thanks for posting these Baity.
Damn, Kaz's archers do a disgusting amount of damage for their range, especially given the lack of movement.
I don't know what I find more odd: that the Lancer never tried to Jump or that he waltzed right up to people to try to skewer them with Dragon Whisker instead of staying two panels away.
QuotePride vs PX_Timefordeath (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmHjPhshbj0)
Despite PX's team not being able to catch a break (I know how difficult it is to think of feasible theme teams), it did a lot better against Pride's team (on a non-small map) than I thought it would. Everything pretty much went downhill after that really weird attempt at Stop that ended up doing nothing at all.
Quotelogus vs CT5Holy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UmjiZdAzOE)
Congrats to both sides (since I only said congrats to logus in my reply). Managed to be quite a good match contrary to how many people had dropped dead in the first two minutes.

Top players are: philsov 3-0 Skip Sandwich 3-0 Kaz 3-0 Barren 2-1 Pride 2-1
So philsov, Skip, Kaz and the winner of Pride vs. Barren gets to go into single elimitation.

Zaen vs BaitySM: Too bad that Zaen couldn't win this one. I would've hoped for the best for him but he couldn't get a break.

I say if the if there's one unit left on a team and all that's happening is status inflicting (expect death sentence), just give the match over to who ever is winning so it'll save you some time. the only way you should end a video is if someone for sure is dying last. or least whoever is at the advantage and nothing is happening
Title: Re: First Beta FFT Arena Tournament
Post by: Skip Sandwich on August 01, 2010, 02:42:15 am
i'm gonna call this a loss for
philsov
and also say that for future tourney's, we should add a clause that if your last remaining unit is confused, you lose. (this would still require some GM arbitration to resolve on a case-per-case basis based on circumstances, unit abilities and whatnot, but it's a good starting point)

I have to agree with SkipSandwich too, if only because that Confusion had already lasted forever.
It is utterly weird though that the AI would use a minimally damaging attack to negate Confusion almost immediately at one instance, but not use an attack that does 100+ the entire time to negate the Confusion in the other instance.
I keep forgetting how the AI prioritizes things. It's so irrational at times....
Heh. I love it how Nameless Dance can back-fire on itself spectacularly if it goes on long enough. (Of course, considering my luck, I'd probably un-Frog people the turn after I Frogged them.)
QuoteFFT Arena: Kaz vs Philsov Round 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pve-FOlP2m0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pve-FOlP2m0)
This match was...informative.
If nothing else, it made me realize that thus far I'm the only person in the entire tournament that's actually been hit by Odin (and arguably lost because of it).

this is a bonus content episode about Goultard, the character my monk is based on, I uploaded it in full to megavideo as both gift and fear-inducing propaganda piece. Agreed, but some grey area should be used as well. In this case there's literally no way my dancer had a chance (move HP up negated all damage output, and this was a Last Dancer, so no real status to pop up either).
I know I'm a bit late, but grats Kaz! Yeah, compat was a stinker. Also the RNG was less than kind towards me... I think in round 1 one of your archers literally never got a status connection. But you've got some beastly archers supported by some beastier AoE. Woo
