Well, its pillow shaded all over the sprite. Use Ninja for the mask.

Jimmy's right about the pillow shading. The palette's way too bright. Did you create it yourself? The hair is too blobby now; you're going to have to distribute the shading better, so it'll actually look like hair...

Monster sprites are way too advanced and complex to do than your average human edits. Calling this a monster sprite would be equal to praising it, which isn't definetly in accordance to your sarcasm.
And for wicked1one1!11 ect.. The best way to start spriting in FFT is to edit original sprites. I'd go and suggest the front diagonal monk pose, to include x1 and x3 previews, and always use colors from other FFT sprites, never your own.
This ought to do the trick.

But Smash, do you know that monsters can be bad done as well? And I certainly didn't mean to praise it.
Title: Re: First try at a sprite
Post by: Smash on February 19, 2010, 05:57:41 pm
Badly done monsters aren't "wonderful" like you said. Nor horrible, as for the official ones. Instead, they're probably the best done sprites in the game.
The new guy just wants to improve. If you all want to make fun of them, at least try to make it productively with a crit or two.

I like the concept of a lady gaga sprite... D: But the guys are right. The shading isn't the greatest. And the colors are too bright. My suggestion is never ever use just plain old white. Use soft greys and dark greys.

Still some pillows on her hair. Also, what's those brown lines on her arms?
Title: Re: First try at a sprite
Post by: Kagebunji on February 20, 2010, 07:41:46 am
This doesn't look like GaGa, so it is a big plus Her arms are kinda long and they aren't connected to chest properly. As Jimmy said, what is that brown around arms? And also there is a lot of brown near her right eye (our right), delete it.
Title: Re: First try at a sprite
Post by: mav on February 20, 2010, 11:27:17 am
Much better. The hairstyle is very cute, just fix the outlines that Kage and Jimmy mentioned (I think you just accidentally used the wrong shade on the arms).
Title: Re: First try at a sprite
Post by: wicked1one11!! on February 20, 2010, 03:15:37 pm
Made her right arm a bit shorter, fixed the outline, and moved her head over to the right one pixel (Hoping to make the arms look better attached to her body), and got rid of some of the brown on her (Our) right side (http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i79/killianaka/GagaFix1.png)

Post by: Kagebunji on February 20, 2010, 04:24:11 pm
Move the head one more pixel to the left, it still lokks funny. For future(remeber this, one of spriters basic things to know), if you are swapping heads or doing something with those, always look where the eyes are, if you want to implement new head, look where the eyes of the base are, and then replace it with your head, pretty simple.
Title: Re: First try at a sprite

One more pixel to the left should do it--right now she looks jive.

Title: Re: First try at a sprite
Post by: mav on February 21, 2010, 12:08:59 pm
That style of mask may not work in FFT form--it's not detailed, but the structure and shading to it may be hard to mimic on such a small scale. Good luck anyways.
Title: Re: First try at a sprite
Post by: Clementine on February 21, 2010, 02:04:42 pm
I liked it better without the mask, personally. If you're going to do a mask, use the male Ninja's mask. Otherwise it looks like you were just too lazy to finish her face... Otherwise, I like it. Even though I don't think it looks much like Gaga D: It might be a little hard to do a Gaga-esque sprite for FFT, because her outfits are so elaborate and out-there.
Title: Re: First try at a sprite

Title: Re: First try at a sprite
Post by: Tonb3rry on February 21, 2010, 02:30:37 pm
In Wiked's defense (not that I'm exactly a Lady Gaga fan), is that what it's really about? The whole goal of the forum is to help spriters improve, yes? You don't exactly have to patch the sprite, but there's a bit of a niche for everyone isn't there? I mean, I've been working on the Werewolf sprite; people aren't exactly beating down my door for it. I've seen work on the Scholar. Great work, but nothing I'm planning on patching into my games. I don't think it matters if one happens to be a fan of the source material, but rather that we make the effort to help one another improve. Just tossing my two cents in.

Your right Kage! Instead of doing something I like for myself and want to do, I should do something for the general populace, please the masses as they say! Once again though, you forget that I'm not making lady gaga, that I was inspired BY HER OUTFIT. Otherwise don't you think I would just call the edit LADY GAGA? And frankly I may be new here, but I don't appreciate you bagging on either my work or what I'm trying to go for, and personally? I couldn't give two shits if you don't like Lady Gaga, but get your head out of your ass and get over it, you don't have to post in my thread if your just going to make comments like that. :/
Anyways, back on topic.. I agree, forget the mask, looked better without..but I'm trying to think of how to alter it so it doesn't just look like a slimmed down female monk.

Sprite itself is good, but Lady GaGa and your damn inpiration sucks a lot, just what is good in her outfit? You could call this sprite mummy, and it would attract fuckin lot of people.

You know, I don't go in your thread and trash your work, or the reasoning's behind it, so I'd expect some sort of showmanship, and expect the same. But I guess thats a little much to ask, because "OM.FG IT IS GAGA?! FUK DAT! THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING! Oh wait, its not? Ok, here, let me help you. Oh wait, it IS?! FUK DAT AGAIN!" You big hypocrite. :/
Title: Re: First try at a sprite

But dood, my sprites are not a manifestation of Beyonce or Michael Jackson, so you cannot brag about that. Just why am i wasting my keyboard here, good luck with this sprite dood, I look further to your improvements(there, this was "showmanship") and just fix the arm connection to her chest (our right arm), copy/paste Rafa or something, because this connection just is wrong.
Title: Re: First try at a sprite
Post by: mav on February 21, 2010, 04:36:57 pm
Oi...
To rework the mask, consider taking the bottom part of the male Ninja's mask (as Clem suggested earlier) and just give her a blindfold/bandanna. I also think you should go ahead and leave the female Monk's legs and head, and just use Rafa's chest and arms.
Title: Re: First try at a sprite
Post by: Jon on February 21, 2010, 04:38:22 pm
Haha, wow, never thought Kage would get into a verbal disagreement with a newby spriter, well whatever, lets try to keep our cool here...anyways, as for the sprite, I think that you might need to change pretty much just the hair (too pillow shaded), the arms (well at least the brown crap surrounding them-look at other sprites like Monk at the same time) and the face mask covering thing could be changed around a bit. Not to bad, but like everyone else, how come Lady Gaga? But whatever, do whatever you want, and not what other people want

Sprite ~ Looks okay but what's wrong with her left boot? Her hair need some fixes. Her left shoulder is bit odd. Hmm...
Portrait ~ First of all, her hair colour is different from the sprite and the reference. Second, somethings odd about her face. Hmm...Oh, what happened under her ear?
Title: Re: First try at a sprite
Post by: mav on March 05, 2010, 08:23:04 am
With the portrait, she's missing some ear, her face is either too long or too narrow, and the hair doesn't have enough shape to match the sprite. Keep working on it. I might be able to take a shot at it, but I'm pretty busy now, so I dunno...

I like it, Jimmy.
As for your portrait, wicked, it could use a little work: her forehead is a little too long, the right part of her hair (our left) is too wide, the mouth is too small, and the ear is misshapen.

Well, those blacks under her chin are suppose to be the shadows. You're not putting any shadows there but rather using that as the line for her chin. And because of that, she has square jaw now.
Title: Re: First try at a sprite

You're on the right track, you've just left out a lot of shadow--she needs some around her hair, cheek, chin, and neckline. Make sure to anti-alias where necessary.

The grey in the skirt and the dark blue in the blouse are very similar and can be merged I think. If you want the two colors to be different, they're not different enough.
I also only count 12 colors:
1 - black (outline, eyes, ect) 3 - shades of brown for boots/hair 2 - skin shades 1 - grey in skirt 2 - white shades in belt 2 - blue shades in blouse 1 - Transparency (EDIT: Whoops, forgot about this one)
If there's any more colors, they're too similar to one of these and should be merged.
Anyway, great progress so far. Lot of work to go but keep at it.

Kaijyuu's color count seems pretty accurate to me, take a look at the palette and revise accordingly.
