Title: Alternative Monster Palettes/Sprites
Post by: Vanya on June 11, 2008, 01:12:34 am
In this thread I'll be releasing some recolored and revised monster sprites to liven things up. I'll be making updates from time to time as I redesign the monster sprites and come up with ideas for new abilities.

Classics Chocobos (for my personal hack)  final
(http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh189/koala_knight/Sample-NewChocobos-Classics.jpg)

Ideas:

Common Chocobo - Attack; Choco Cure; [Choco Ball]
Innate: Move in Water; Any Ground; Counter.

Green Chocobo - Attack; Choco Cure; Choco Esuna; [Choco Ball]
Innate: Move in Water; Ignore Height; Counter.

Black Chocobo - Attack; Choco Ball; Float; [Choco Meteor]
Innate: Move in Water; Any Ground; Fly; Counter.

Basic Chocobos  final
(http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh189/koala_knight/Sample-NewChocobos-Basic.jpg)

These are just different shades, and hues of yellow chocobos. They could all have the same skills, but different stats and growths. Or they can all have a variety of skills, whatever.

They came about as I was researching the different kinds of Chocobos. I noticed that 6 different games have only yellow chocobos. So here are a nice group of wild chocobos. I'll be adding another one called 'old school' that has colors sampled from the actual games they're from[/b]

Loner Chocobos
(http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh189/koala_knight/Sample-NewChocobos-Loners.jpg)

FF2-DoS - Basically the same as a river chicobo.
FF3DS - Just a basic chocobo as far as I know.
FF6 - See above.
FF8 - Same as river type.
FFX & X-2 - Very good jumper's but I wouldn't equate them to a Mountain chocobo. They are also able to open chests and search for hidden treasures, therefore I'd give them 'Move - Find Item'.

FF4 Chocobos  final
(http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh189/koala_knight/Sample-NewChocobos-FF45.jpg)

The colors are based on a combination of the SNES and GBA versions. There's a red chocobo that is from the Lunar Ruins.

Ideas:

Common Chocobo - River type.
White Chocobo - Has a special MP recovery skill.
Black Chocobo - The very first chocobos that could fly.
Red Chocobo - They only appear in a side quest on the Moon. The only thing that I can definitely say is that they are kept by a breeder.

FF7 Chocobos
(http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh189/koala_knight/Sample-NewChocobos-FF7.jpg)

Common Chocobo - This version can't cross rivers.
Mountain Chocobo - Can climb mountains.
River Chocobo - Can cross any shallow waters.
Black Chocobo - Mountain X River.
Golden Chocobo - Can basically can go anywhere and walk on water.

This is cool. I was just thinking how a lot of the early monster palettes look sort of unremarkable. Cuars in particular. Vampire looks awesome but the other 2 dont do much for me. I like these new palettes.

Nice, how about a bright pink malboro next?  :P

LOL! Sorta like a Vivian from FF12? I'll get to it.

Actually, If I really get into this I'll do a bunch of sets from various games. There ARE like 4 empty palettes I can work with. Right now I'm doing the ones that are going to be in my personal hack. I'll add others as I go along.

Say, what do you guys think if I did an SPR for each FF title the monster type appeared in?

If you're willing to go to the trouble, could you please do something like this for the first 2 squid classes? They're just very bland at the moment. I dont mind if the colours are still muted (not everything good has to be vibrant), but the scheme just doesnt work on either of them at the moment.

Hmm. So many of them aren't very good palettes. Flotiball, Tree Classes (except for that one that actually looks like a tree, which is cool), bird classes, Bull Demon, Minotaurus.

Also, rad. Pink Malboro. I could get behind that

Hmm, looks quite classy. Even small changes like these are nice to see.
OT: What do you use to change sprites? Now that my time trial with tehe Corel Paint is up, I need to find another alternative.
Title:
Post by: Vanya on June 11, 2008, 11:56:59 pm
I use a program called NeoPaint. It's easy to find, but it isn't free. There are ways around that, though.

heh. The green one looks cool. Though I will probably leave chocobos the way they are.
Title:
Post by: Zozma on June 12, 2008, 02:45:32 am
the green looks cool but i say do a little more shading to it... right now it looks like a poison chocobo lol. but i had considered making a blue, green and white one (like the ones ff7 has) a river chocobo, forest chocobo, and holy choco.

(there are two unused green bomb palettes that might be perfect for the green one take a look at them, also in find that the blue bombs colors are perfect for a blue chocobo)

well you can make up to 8 different colored chocobos with the same sprite as well.. and also if you use the doppelganger idea i mentioned, u can get those other palettes without screwing up the original 3.

If anyone remembers Trickster from FF12, that would be a good use for a white chocobo palette. Only thing is that one of Trickster's trademarks was invisibility and currently that doesn't work very well for the AI in Tactics.

Also, there was a guest Bangaa for that fight I think, so....maybe a guest Goblin or something? I think that would be a cool special fight to have early in the game. Currently a lot of the special battles are in chapters 3 and 4.

I researched every chocobo in the entire series and I'm planning on doing a sprite for every major grouping of them. I'm doing one for FF4/FF5 next, which will include a yellow, white, and black chocobo. One each for FF7, FF9, FF11, and FF12.

Oh! I forgot to mention, I already revised the New Chocobos sprite, but I haven't uploaded it yet.

New Chocobo added from FF4 & 5. I'd like to know what you guys think of the beaks. I tried to make them more like the ones in pretty much every other FF. I may update the other 2 chocobo sets with the new beaks depending on the feed back I get.
Title:
Post by: Grandy on June 12, 2008, 09:10:26 pm
The beaks look nice, just not too FFT-ish IMO. I'd stick with the original ones.

I'm loving the white Chocobo/Trickster idea, and the sprite looks great.

Are you going to post preview pics of your other palette swaps?

I'm kind of ambigioius on the beak change.
Title:
Post by: Vanya on June 12, 2008, 10:16:08 pm
I am indeed posting previews of all monsters here in this thread.

I have an idea about the beaks. I'm using them from now on, and I'll retrofit the first 2 sprites with them. If anyone wants the no beak look they can rip the palette from my sprites and apply them to a plain chocobo sprite. They'd have to make adjustments to the portrait palettes.

AWESOME!! I LOVE THE WHITE CHOCOBO!! any chance on a gold chocobo?
Title:
Post by: Vanya on June 13, 2008, 08:22:26 am
I'm already working on New FF7 Chocobos.SPR, which will include yellow, green, blue, black, and gold varieties. I'm trying something new, too. I'm sampling the colors directly from high quality screen shots to make them look more accurate to FF7. Depending how they turn out I may do this for the rest of the sprite changes I make.

Thanks!

I forgot to mention, I'm redoing the FF4 & 5 chocobos, but since everyone seems to like the first version of the white chocobo I'm going to use it for Trickster in the FF12 set.

Smart plan. I know that someone...(I think Karuma, so sorry that I am spelling that wrong), has already done a blue chocobo. Trickster is going to be awesome. I like drawing material from FFXII since it is actually related to FFT.

i dig the white choco as well; any thoughts on a real black chocobo? like one that uses moderate to really dark shades of grey to appear black (and not purple?)

a sprite of flammie from the SD series would be cool....hmm... i think i'll do something like that....maybe
Title:
Post by: Vanya on June 16, 2008, 06:39:00 pm
Thanks!

The dark grey to black shaded chocobo will be part of the FF7 set. It's actually already done, I just have to upload it.

BTW, the final version of the FF4 & 5 set is up!

Vanya, I have some constructive criticism on your latest update for the FF4 & 5 I believe. The "blue" chocobo's colors look just a tad off. I think it is the lightest shade of blue you are using. Maybe it has just a little too much purple to it? Regardless of what color you are trying to get it to look that lightest shade just looks a little off. I wasn't sure about the red/orange chocobo at first. But after giving it some thought I like it.
Title:
Post by: Vanya on June 17, 2008, 12:30:25 am
I thought as much about that color, but I didn't say anything to see what reaction it would get. It is exactly the shade used in the GBA, but then again, it looks different on a 16x16 sprite. I may adjust it, but not until tomorrow.

Feel free to critique my work any time, I appreciate it. And I felt the same wy about that wierd red chocobo.

Added FF7 chocobos today.

I need a little help from you guys. Does anyone have, or know where I can get, any good screen shots of a Red Chocobo from FF12? The only one I've found so far is very very shitty. In fact I could really use screen captures of all the others too. Thanks in advance!

Edit: Damn! It looks like there are no shots of FF9 chocobos either. HELP!!!

You might need some FFXI chocobos as well. I will see what I can find for IX & XII.

Thanks, Cheetah! That helps for 9. At least I have the yellow one now. i already had that pic from 11, so I'm covered there already. Hopefully, those are the standard colors, because I ran into a page that had various skins for the PC version. Even found a hot pink one, LOL!

Updated chocobo post with the Loner set. It includes chocobos from games that only had one breed. I also updated some "ideas" with info on abilities the birds had in their native games.

Also, some may have noticed its just FF4 Chocobos now. I realized that the chocobos in this game have different palettes than the ones from FF5. So I will be doing the 2 FF5 chocobos on their own with some bonus palettes included.

That, then, leaves the following sets:
FF5
FF9
FF11
FF12

FF9 won't be completed until I can get or make some screen shots of the upgrade colors for Zidane's chocobo. The same for 12. However, I think I can proceed with 11.

Finally, I'd like to announce that after those are done, I'll be taking suggestions for a brand new set of chocobo colors. it'll be a sort of 'Fan Request' set.

You should throw together a "monster overhaul package" if you're still planning to do this for other monsters. I would totally use it.

They are cool colors. I just worry that they wont match the overall palette of the game and are a bit too pastel-y. Aka look like they belong in a mario game.

What might you suggest then? I want them to fit.
