Note: All the blame goes to Px for the misleading title.
Now then, I made some Ramza Beoulve pixel art a while ago, but in a new, more realistic style I made up at the same time.
So far, I got thsi. (Beware, WIP)
18 colors so far.. And all the effort I put trying to make him look recognizable with a nose.
The face even fits in the portrait space perfectly.
Now, good idea? Should I continue? C&C? Comments?
Really looking good, now he has nose and balls.
Its perfect so far, keep the good work
Neat. I don't know how recognizable he is, but this is definitely one of the more interesting portraits/projects I've seen.
Geez, that's cool. Really looking forward to this
This is a very cool project. The squintyness of the eyes took a minute to get used to, but I can't wait to see he finished product.
Amazing. Definitely looking forward.
you should give everyone a nose...
Nose? BLASPHEMY!
Nice! If you change the nose around a bit in the portrait, it sorta looks like Cloud wearing his original clothes in FF7...keep it up!
Cloud? Stay away from him
His head looks puny.
lol sweet crotch
anyways, i think the only thing that needs work is the hair, it comes down a little too far in the back and too thin in the front
the turtleneck looks bomb nice work
Whoa
Too much party and alchohol these last nights
I should update.
Whoa, it looks like you're planning some seriously wicked stuff for the armor. Keep up the good work, man.
Wait till you see.
*Brave up +2*

I got crits in other sites.
Very nice, now the main character will have something that no one else has...a nose!
(And a kick-ass armor)
You know, I would have made Agrias and the crew if these didn't take too damn long.
I might settle for portraits, but then again I'd rather finish Bangaa and Wyvern before doing it.
..Now that I think about it, making somebody in this style, and mounting a Chocobo at the same time would be beyond epic.. But im content with just imagining it, heh..
Simply amazing!!!
Ooo...I definitely love to see it if you mount with Chocobo ^^
The lower part of the nose looks off to me, it looks simultaneously too big and too small. Also I think the hair's a bit too short.
I like this alot. But yeah, I think his nose (bone/cartilage) is too long, maybe shift the bulb of the nose up a few pixels? Either way, that armor is brilliant! One thing though- no offense- his stance is sorta sissy...make his legs spread out more, like a combat-ready soldier looking to kill 6 other guys...and do something with the left arm (maybe a shield) or make his hand clenched into a fist, like Ramza is burning inside with rage! Maybe just maybe change them eye brows so that he looks more like a sword demon that wants to stick that (awesome looking outline-I know this will rock) sword in someone's face or stomache, other than that, really cool, keep it up!
I'm just curious, is htere some certain point that you are doing this, or is this for fun?
Worked on nose, shades and pallete tweaks, and other stuff.
Stance got critd 2 times now, so im also working on it.
Also, im doing this for practice, and to start my way into bigger pixel art, which is currently out of my confort zone.. (which btw offers MUCH more improvement in skill than sprites)
I chose Ramza to practice proportions, so I might do a female later to get both sexes done.
Then I'll move on to backgrounds and places, as those seem the hardest.
Oh and..
Quote from: "Jon"One thing though- no offense-
...
I think Asmo mentioned this FFH problem before. Guys, we need to be harsh when it comes to critique. Softening it won't get the intended message reach us whole, or won't motivate enough.
As for me, insult all you want, as long as you have a reason to do it.

Btw, Sword type and shield suggestions welcome.
Nice way for practicing, if I had more time I would do the same, but I must learn how to play drums
I'm a bit saddened you kept the aho since I think it makes him look childish/less serious than he actually is, but otherwise it's great.
EDIT: Yeah there's the stance issue too, but everyone else already mentioned that. Maybe a more relaxed stance? Or if you want to use a more tense stance, perhaps if he was leaning forward a bit more (preparing to charge or whatnot).
As far as his stance goes, I say just have his right leg (and foot) facing towards us. His left arm should be relaxed but natural.
I have another question, why do topixc is "Zalbaa...g!", not "Ramzaa...!"??
About sword, I would sugest using simple Iron Sword
Yeah, Iron Sword is nice. For shield, I'd say Kaiser Plate, Crystal / Platina Shield. ^^
Haha iron sword?? Thats funny to me. At least make it Mythril...naw what I mean is make it either a rapier type sword or a broad sword, possibly even a saber. As for the shield, no idea, and lots of offense- I hope it aint a round shield

very nice keep it up Smash!
welcome back smash
Quote from: "Luminar"welcome back smash :P
And Kaijyuu, I think the serious look may be best off to Ch4 Ramza, as well as more bulk and manliness.
The spaulders shouldn't have spikes on them. If your opponent barely misses your shoulder, he's still going to hit you through your armor.
I dont know what a spaulder is, but.. This is how the original design's suppossed to look like.
And this.
Going down the arms, fixed the pose.
Every section and plate of the body feels like if I was spriting 5 portraits, when it comes to practice.. Phew.
Epic skill workout this is.
You are amazing Smash, it almost makes me angry ;)

Strange.. I don't even consider myself an expert at all, somewhat experienced, yes.. But still a long way to go.
Go to the Pixeljoint hall of fame and you'll see why.. I feel like a noob everytime I go.
I even admire some of the artists there, like Fool and Helm. Best pixel art on the internet, to date.
It also serves as motivation to get up there and surpass them someday.
Oh cool you started the sword! Will it look a bit rusty?
You use your second darkest hair color on the armor. While not too bad on 1x it's very noticeable when zooming. I'm not sure what you should do because it would either require replacing it by existing blue or creating a new color which I suppose you wouldn't want. 3rd option would be to leave it as is of course.
Also you're using two very close colors on the face; you should just merge them. Definitely not worth the extra color and too hard to see.
The head's shape looks too squarey to me but I'll try to give you better feedback later on since I'm not too sure what to say right now.

Do they actually make sprites that will be used in games though?
Alot.
Most of what I see are fantasy mockups though. Everything's focused on the actual art rather than making games.
And for Ramza, I think it gives off a cool effect, the oranges on the armor. Thing is I've been currently practicing with different palletes and colors recently, cause it's where im lacking at most. Im getting too much critique regarding my overuse of FFT-like palletes, and it's getting really tiring to stay with one style and not move in and try new stuff.
Besides, another shade of blue would make it seem uniform and a bit boring.. Im aiming for color diversity everywhere, like my avatar for example. (Which has an insanely outrageous crazy conflicting pallete if you zoom in)
And yeah, I'll have to blend those two. That'd be one color space free to replace.. Either a dark red for the pants, or a white for the sword shine.
Either way, the pallete is subject to change while I go through.
Looks awesome. I wouldn't dare use that portrait without a full set though. It would look extremely out of place mixed in with the other style. Your shading is fantastic.
What I find odd is the length of his neck compared to the size of his head. Am I the only one who thinks it looks rather long?

And that I gotta see as well. Haha.
what the fuck.

I just noticed that. It looks a little long, but I'm not quite sure how nice it would look if it was shortened.
Forum sweep must've taken my update with it..
I said the head was getting a remake too.
Amazing!!! I don't know what to say other than that. Love the rusty effect ^^
Well, there's going to be rust for crapload of plates next, but I first need to know something.
Im leaning towards down left. Down right is the original above before remake.
POLL.
Honestly bottom right. The nose looks way too flat on the other 3.
Else the shading on the bottom left one is good but could use a bit more work. His face looks a bit too "scratched" because of the shading.
Your proportions as a whole are off. It is hard for me to tell what is up but the first thing you need to do is move the chest plate up to his chest. Right now it is covering his stomach more than anything, it should be all the way up so that the top of the plate is essentially level with the top of his shoulders (not counting the spikes). I think that will reveal how you need to bring his crotch up as well and adjust his arms.
I'm not sure about the face yet...could you do a version without a nose just to satiate my curiosity?
Oh god look at 2 asdfasdfafaffsa aliens.
3 seems pretty close to FFT. :|
I'll stretch the chestplate a bit up btw. It was hard to determine where to put it because of the unreal proportions the original Ramza art had.
For the face, I kinda prefer the lefts' one, bottom left.
Quote from: "Smash"To me, they seem perfectly fine.
I agree...and when you have the body outlined like that, it's
really hard to find and problems, for me at least.
Haha thank you for doing the nose-less, I enjoyed it. I'm glad you are going to try stretching up the chest plate, hopefully it will mend my concerns. This is looking crazy good.
I really like it how it is. I can understand what Cheetah means, this armor is a little bit like what they wear in Fire Emblem (Cavaliers) except of course for the spikes on the shoulder-pauldren armor pieces. In FE, I believe (not sure though) that the body-armor on say Sain or Kent is covering their chest fully and almost touching their neck. I think that Sain and Kent's stomach is almost entirely exposed, except for a narrow piece of armor going down the middle which reaches about to where their belt buckle is. Yours is visually very impressive, but I must agree to raise the central roundish armor piece up (maybe where the neck armor piece starts?) Even if you don't, Ramza looks great. I have only one small question: how are the shoulder pieces of armor actually staying on his shoulders? I mean if this was reality, are they sort of strapped on or part of the central body armor? Keep up the awe-inspiring work Smash!
There's absolutely nothing wrong with the proportions. And it's a matter of personal preference whether or not the plate should be higher or lower. I kind of like it where it is
My personal preference would be that the plate reaches up to the base of his neck.
