it's not complete but I thought I would show what I've been working on
I still need to: remove gloves, fix hair, and maybe narrow up the bottom some more so it looks less like a dress

It is a decent start but it definitely needs some work. Before you do anything else I would recomend adjust your colors. Your colors are all too dark and you need more contrast, right now he looks really flat. I usually just pull my colors from existing sprites to get my shades matched up well, but it is up to you.
Though why not just call him Kenshin
A rather pointless piece of criticism is that I'm not sure you need to blow up the example that much, maybe just 4X. I actually jumped back a little when the image popped up, I wasn't expecting something quite that big.

Is he supposed to look like Kenshin Himura? 'Cause that's who he reminds me off.
I'd pick some diferent shades of red for the hair, it's kinda hard to see the contrast.

I'd suggest dropping the Kenshin thing for a generic ronin and make it ... well ... more generic. As for Kenshin, he would make a kick ass special unit.
