Setup 1:
Fire/Ice/Bolt
L1 Largest AOE, Range, and Vertical, Lowest Damage Mods
L2 In Between
L3 In Between
L4 Smallest AOE, Range, and Vertical, Highest Damage Mods
L1->L4 all have same MP Cost and Speed
Setup 2:
Replace Fire/Ice/Bolt 1/2/3/4 with 2 Spells of the following elements:
Fire
Ice
Bolt
Water
Wind
Earth
The first spell being a powerful elemental attack.
The second being weaker, but with a chance to cause a negative status.
Both first and second spells have the same AOE, Range, and Vertical of the vanilla level 1 elemental spells.
MP Cost and Speed undecided until I see a need to balance this in comparison to other mages.

I actually like FFT's solution to higher level magic. Higher damage but longer casting time/MP cost.
FFT may have not implemented the idea the best, though.

I was thinking about that, and then I was playing FF1 or 2 or 5 or something, and there's an attack called Flaremancer, where you summon a magician who apparently specializes in Flare Magic.
So I thought about it - how would Flare Magic be set up? Let's assume that the spell Flare in FFT is the top tier, level 4, Flare spell. It's powerful, has a good range, and poor AoE. Now, what would the level 1 Flare spell look like? Weak attack power, but great AoE and vertical, who knows what the range and MP cost look like.
So why not apply that same system to the Wizard's elemental spells?
You could go one further, and make six, or eight, elemental mages, each with similiar spells varying all the factors in each spell: Attack Power, Range, AoE, Vertical, MP Cost, Add Status, and maybe JP Cost. Might be suitable for anyone making a hack that doesn't use the traditional Black/White/Blue/Green/Red/Time Magic system.
