i am going to attempt to make a Card Captor Sakura sprite/portrait and will be posting my progress here :D
She's cute, use the first one or second, good luck.
Don't worry about the palettes nor portrait, it's nice to sit back and say "I made the portrait, it's pretty and I don't have to worry about it" but it isn't a primary objective. Focus on only a single sprite (diagonal facing is best), use a good base and copy\paste from other sprites until you are near enough to work by hand pixel-by-pixel. Then simply repeat what you did and what you copied\pasted on to the rest of the sprites.
It is okay to go over 16 colors while you are making her first sprite, just don't go too far over because when you are done you are going to need to cut it down to 16 (15 + 1 bg color).
Ah...sakura. I love to see Yue in action. Hehe. And yes, I agree with Aura, first or second. Though I prefer second ^^
Good luck and looking forward.

progress so far. Arch wanted to see it and im sure some other people did too. Im basing it off the second pic but im changing some minor things about it.
edit: bigger pic.
Good start, you should change the proportions to match to second picture, and update the outfit. But you already know that. >_<
im getting rid of the white tentacle things, i just dont really like them. i need to move the hem of the dress upwards a bit. the darker blue didnt seem to show well on the black background...
Edit! her boots are killing me because FFT boots are all combat style and way too big.
Edit2: stole balmy's boots, shaved off a little excess, moved up the skirt a little (working on fixing her porportions right now. which ones in particular?)

Post png. Its blurry. White cloth like tentacles got to go. I don't think it can fit nicely into the sprite. For her hat, you could try Goblin's hat and Balmafula's ponytail. For her boots, you could try Balmafula. Doesn't really look combat. For glove, maybe Zalbag, Berseker, Ignis. Long skirt, either Aeris or Female Chemist. If mini skirt, then custom made probably.
(http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj209/blitzer_R/SakuraBasefinished1-2.png) heres a slightly more updated one (just nit-picking really) the darker color was just bugging me too much, and she doesnt really wear dark colors anyways so i kicked that one out. pushed her arm up and over a little. shortened her overall slightly. still in the 15 color limit so thats a plus.
Hmm...Colours are too bright. Her hips is too thin. Legs are thin also. Hands are bit small. Hmm....
Post those bigger and in .PNG, I just can't tell what's going on with this sprite.
Are you drawing this by hand or borrowing from existing sprites and possibly modifying it from there? The palette definitely needs work: borrow the skin and hair color from someone like Teta (any brunette should do, but I can't recall how many there actually are in-game), the purples from the Black Goblin, and the yellows from the male Oracle. Right now it's messy and flat.
Good luck.
taking pieces and fitting them onto the body. ths skin color was actually a direct copy from the actual picture but it is coming across too bright, same with the hair. this game has a massive lack of brunettes which really bothers me... ive also been trying to scale the body slightly because she is clearly not full grown in the show, and rather on the short side.
basic body breakdown is alma's arms, slightly readjusted. time mage head and shoulders, hat has obvious changes. boots are from balmufala(sp?) dress is teta's skirt moved up somewhat to show off the legs.

made bigger and png
Is this your first sprite? It is really bad-shaded. What am I talking about?! It isn't shaded! You know this is .PNG but it still looks really blurry, just try to post a BMP.
yes its my first sprite. it was shaded but the shading was too dark and it looked like pieces were free floating.
What program are you using? Cause whatever you're doing to resize the images isn't working out.
resized with microsoft picture manager or w/e (main computer was toasted so im stuck on a laptop til its fixed sorry) would have used gale but dunnow how
Just use Ms Paint and resize to 200x or 300x or so.
Use MS Paint and make sure to use the (http://i49.tinypic.com/rs6edz.png) tool to select what needs to be resized, then simply right click, hit "Stretch/Skew", and input 200 or 300 as the percent values, and you'll be set.
(http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj209/blitzer_R/200.png) fixed pic. no update for today cause i had company over. did make him an evil looking zalmo sprite though.
At least it isn't blurry

You really need to shade it a LOT.
Ya, what ive decided to do is postpone this sprite until i have made some easier things like pallete changes and minor tweaks. Im going to make a full party of semi-custom sprite for one file of tactics, then come back to this.
That's a good idea. After you've brushed up on the basics, you'll be ready to take on the more challenging aspects of spriting. I mean, your topic and its sprite reminds me so much of Kage's first topic and sprite, and look at his capabilities now--astonishing differences.
