I'm recoloring Ramza for a small modification I am working on and was wondering what most of you vet guys around here think looks best.
I was planning on changing every Ramza (Ch1, Ch2, Ch4) but I'm not sure what I could do with the original one besides a color swap. I figure the Ch2 one could have armor while the Ch4 one would have armor and a cape. Any feedback is appreciated.
they are all actually pretty good, good job using existing palletes instead of making your own.
If i had to choose one i'd go for the second to last one with the navy shirt
All the color choices are nice, but my personal favorites are the red and gray ones.
As for what to do with Ramza, the sprite that needs to be fixed the most is Ch. 4. Fix those butt-pants; a cape would do the trick. Color-wise try coming up with a theme: what should the color scheme represent thematically?

Buh, what? Palette what? I just started modding today. Link me to a reference about this? I know that the palette is very limited but you can't just make a photoshop palette for importation?
I did the color swap with "Color Replacement" in Photoshop, a quick and painless process.
most of the time making your own pallete turns out really shitty, but yours look alright so i assumed you got them from another sprite
...Pink ramza? Is ramza..? Naw...
I particulary like the Red and green outfits.
Yeah, generally a good rule is to borrow palettes from existing sprites. For instance, you may utilize the purples on Teta's sprite for purple Ramza, or the red from the male Knight, etc. You did a pretty decent job creating your own, but many times what appears in game may differ radically from your intention. I assumed these were custom palettes, but I wasn't sure, so I didn't mention anything.
Next thing you want to do is to change all Ramza palettes in the events.
Very nice ^^

No need, the event sprites automatically use the palette of the assigned sprite unless otherwise designated.
Future Plans: Thanks for the feedback guys. I think I'll go with Red and use it on all the versions of Ramza we remake. I plan to give each family a different primary color:
Zalbag & Dycedarg = orange
Ramza & Alma = red
Teta & Delita = purple
Meliadoul & Izlude & Vormav = green
etc.
Need Help: But I ran into a problem and need some help. My current progress so far is this:
I got a 16 color palette using Photoshop to reduce to 16 colors and then I used PalSuite3 to extract the palette and reduced that to 16 colors. So far so good on that front. But here are the problems I have:
*When I import the sprite and view the animation frames (right panel in Shishi's) they have a red instead of black background. I think this has to do with red being at the front of my color palette. I don't know how to swap it with black though (at least the palette saved with image, not the extracted one).
*When I extract the BMP from the sprite in preparation to recolor the portrait is all garbled up because of an inaccurate palette on extraction. Which means I can't edit the portrait and when I reimport the edited bitmap the portrait doesn't even show up.
I think Cid's guide points out the rest very clearly but these points have me stumped. All help is appreciated.

I see. So that's how it works.

For the portrait, you might want to read Mav's tutorial in the tutorials link.
Damn, that's a pretty in-depth tutorial thanks for mentioning it. Also thanks for setting it up to have the portrait work also!
Hah, completely done and in-game. If anyone else wants to use it I've attached it.
I also tried my hand at recoloring RopeSander's Ch4.

The red is a wee bit too dark, but still a very solid concept.

O RLY?
What about this?

Better. Have you thought about swapping out the gold with something else?
Oversaturated, in my opinion.
Borrow dark reds from existing sprite palettes.
Or, lessen the saturation values of the reds.
~80+ = not good

Is this a preference or will I run into glitches? Also what do you think I should replace the gold with? Light Gray maybe?
Preference.
Test it in-game, and see how well it blends with other FFT sprites.

Light Gray? worth a try.
Come get some . . .

Feedback?
this red looks better, the others were too saturated and dark. hell you could probably just use delita ch 2/3/4 palette for the armor and cape
Yes, what they said.
well i like the red and gold combination personally, to me it shows his darker side and the red and gold could be represenative of his royal blood.
Quotedarker side and the red and gold could be represenative of his royal blood
much like Mercs chapter 1 Ramza.
I decided to make Ramza red based on his sister (Alma) being red.
Glad to see my sprite has put a smile on someone's face *tear... I like the above alot.
I think he didn't know it was like yours. lol.

But yeah, you're right. Your sprites are very similar to Paheej's,
which I think should be reworked.
