I've seen coming out various characters from Chrono Trigger also decided to try, then I created the character more evil and one of the most powerful of the game. Magus!
If you plan on having that much color variation, your sprite's gonna end up looking terrible. Look at how much depth has been lost and how flat the sprite is. Fix that up and re-post.
This is my first sprite so I would like a bit of assistance, if possible ...
Post a version that is 2 or 4 times larger.
ok !
Ok well the skin and hair palettes dont have enough depth, causing them to look flat. The cape only seems to have 2 colours and this also makes it look flat/cartoonish. The chest is too square and not shaded properly. Any time you're basically just shoving vertical or horizontal lines together you know you're doing something wrong. Mav is right. If you want to get proper depth on your palette you are going to have to make a few concessions in the design. The cape might have to be the same colour as the thighs or something. Also, copy and paste more. Same with the palettes.
you could create an sample that I could use to fix these errors?
Maybe use Delita's Hair and the Knight's body and arms.
Don't edit the pixels yet. Just the colors.
He should get himself a new chest and waist.
I can try to use the kinght's chest, but the hair does not look like Delita's hair
Combine delitas hair with the dancers hair then
I think the hair of the dancer would not quite sure, but I can try the Ajora or the Summoner.
ajora hair in the back would probably work pretty well for this
All his hair falls behind his shoulders, so go with Summoner. Ajora provides an example of what colors and shading you can use though. Remember, the older games tended to use blue to try and shade white stuff, so he's probably got platinum hair.
I also think, I used another chest and Delita's hair.
where are his shoulders? u should maintain that part of the knights body id say
Did you borrow that chest from something, or did you make it yourself? Maybe it's just the bigger view, but it looks like it would appear quite messy in-game.
I got this chest of another sprite, and I used dycedarg sprite as a model for the cape.
You left off a few aspects of his cape, like the shoulders that were pointed out earlier. As Zozma said, it doesn't appear he has any.
this is because the image grown, because the normal size it is normal.
I think you're missing few pixels for the shoulder.
It's just the bigger view, try increasing the original and you will see that the shoulders are in place.
Here.
Haha.. That's too big for me.
Okay, I'll prepare a sample..
Your palettes are all wrong. If you want a blue palette for the cape, find one in the sprite database. Right now you have 2 blues that are almost identical and then a huge leap to the dark one.
14 colors total,
based from Delita's hair, head, body and legs, and Male Knight's cape and arms.
You can add 2 more colors. Maybe for the violet and reds.
And, you can change the skin tone, too, If you want.
I think this boy was very pale to me, but I think I can take advantage of colors used for the cape, hands and feet.
Here my attempt.
You're blowing it up too much now.
Only do like x3 at most.
Right now I can't give an opinion, 'cause all I see is a bunch of colored blocks.
Here's a tip Vanya: walk 40-60 feet away from your monitor.
I don't believe I have a room big enough to position myself for a proper perspective.
sorry ^_^
Mike has the right idea here, Chronos. The skin tone being like that is just a necessary sacrifice. But this looks like it could turn out great if given the proper effort.
I don't believe that is "necessary" at all. I don't believe even Mike filled up the palette.
Surely there's still space in the palette to fit in a black color like what MiKeMiTchi used for the inside of the cape. Also, the chest area looks rather flat. The shading/positioning of some of the pixels could use some work there.
Ok, let me get this straight, I should add a dark background to the cape and maybe change the skin tone!?
Yeah, it's just that you have a ton of purple in that image. That dark color mike used to shade the cape would help break that monotony in the color, and it would look right since the underside of the cape would naturally be shadowed.
Like this ??
Your image is a bit big, but yes, I think that looks better.
Ok, now the face, what i could be making here?
I'm doing it based on the 3D version of it, so I'm doing it with light skin, not enough to be gray.
Ok, I rearrange his face to look like what MiKeMiTchi made the basis of Delita.
for the back view i think
the sumoner is the best option
That 3-D version isn't official in the slightest, but I always have been impressed by how much that project seemed to mimic the original, so it should be a fine concept to follow.
Well, I'll try with the Summoner and the Ajora, to see which is better, then I post later.
Looking good. Keep the advices ^^
Ok, the hair of the Summoner was better ^_^
Give the skin shade a lighter color.
Or better yet, use the remaining color slot for a better skin shade.
Right now the skin tone doesn't blend with one another.
1st frame:
Work with the armor shading. The hair looks fine though.

4th and 5th:
Since you added long hair, you should add shadows below it as well.
Use cape colors for that.
yep looking good. . .
how about raising the forehead a pixel since He was based of Vegeta's head and Vegeta has a high forehead. . . or instead of increasing lessen the darker brown shades to give the wide forehead illusion
The problem is, I'm already using all 16 color slots, but I think that trying to lighten a little the tone of his skin, it may even work.
Or, you could just darken the brightest skin shade.

That is, if you're having a hard time.
Ok, shadows and Vegeta head, and skin tone.
Hmm.. more.
The shadows on the 4th and 5th looks pillow shaded. Consider the light source.
???
1st: the black in the neck should be the darkest blue/violet shade. Armor looks better.
Skin tone: Hmm.. maybe lighten the darkest shade a bit more?
3rd: shading on armor is flat, add dark shades.
The problem is, I'm using the colors of the boots to create the shadow effect of the face.
I modified the armor and the shadows.
Oops, I weren't specific.
The shadow needed to be fix is the pixels from the cape.
His hair on the rear-side view looks like it is off center or something...
Cheetah, is because of his ear, and MiKeMiTchi can you give me an example? ^_^
Oh sure. But it might take a while.
ok !
you can use the delita's hair as base is a lot like the magus but shorter
the ear shouldnt be back like that on the reverse diagonal. Chest plate now looks pillow shaded. For the front view, go and see how the knight's shoulders are shaded and do it like that.
You could pass me the sprite of the Knight, because I accidentally erased it ^_^
Grab it from the main site in the sprite section.
Sorry, I wanted the complete sprite, it's because I actually erased the file Knight.spr of my pc ^_^
You can just re-download the spr file again.
But where, if he was the original game, I never saw the original knight posted on the site.
http://www.ffhacktics.com/spr.php (http://www.ffhacktics.com/spr.php)
Are only fragments of the originals.
do you want the image on .bmp? thats different of the sprite
you can use shishi to get it
Ok, I'll post what has already been done so far for the criticism, whatever, good or bad, will only be helping me to improve what it takes.
Lookin' pretty good.
Looks amazing.
The fourth one in on the top (standing still, back diagonal view) though, looks like the hair is coming from his neck.
Having two straight pixels for the ears may not work out. I mean ever angle looks exactly the same...
Something's bugging me about the hair in the back diag view... I'd see if Elmdor's lower half would work.
Thanks for the warnings, I'll work on it. ^_^
Here's the first beta, is not complete, someone can test it for me and pass me the errors that can be arranged?
1. Did you make your own palette for the hair?
2. Did you try and shade the hair yourself?
May I add too while we are on the topic of the back flowing hair. . . if it is elmdor length or sephiroth length making it flow while walking is a must. . .
im assuming that that is the female knight's hair, in which case its not going to "flow" but rather move back and forth along with the cape.
still something is off id say its what asmo is referring to
I did not try to shade the hair, the hair is from the summoner, and I colored the hair of Delita.
The hair color looks okay, but I think what Asmo is trying to say is that you should have borrowed the colors from other sprites.
otherwise.. Great progress!
If you don't mind, I'll test it.
Please, and if not asking too much, you can help me with the shading?
Magus traditionally has a white face, besides that this is awesome. In your defense though when you meet him as "Janus" he has no white face, maybe clown make-up??
QuotePlease, and if not asking too much, you can help me with the shading?
Hmm.. Okay, I'll try shading some minor things.
Thanks, and I also think he wears makeup. ^_^
wow, i really like where this sprite is headed, I might try fixing up a detail here and there and see about putting it ingame.
and i have a nice mental image of a recoloured version of magus I did in chrono trigger before i'm interested in seeing in FFT as well.
edit: from the posted image, i noticed the head joins badly in a few sprites in the transition between frames, and some of the arms look slightly off in some frames as well, nothing too major from my initial assessment.
Yeah, work on the head and the hair. In fact, I dunno if you picked a good base for the face/hair; you could have gotten away with less work if you'd used Elmdor. Just fix the minor details over the course of a while and you'll be ready.
What mav said ^^
Sorry, I walk out of time to finish the Magus, if someone wants to finish it I thank you, but do not forget to put my name in the credits ^_^
I can't help you, too much work.
I know, but should have more people who can, you know ...
Maybe they just aren't interested in this sprite.
Maybe, but I believe that in this world there is still a being of good heart, who will finish the Magus, maybe ...
WOW, this is kind of a pain in the ass. Looking at the original sprite from SNES seems like it's so simple, but they sacrificed shading for extra colours. they only used like 2 shades per colour.
Here's what i've come up with after looking through which sprites best fit his shape:
it's VERY rough. i pretty much just cut out the parts i'm using and recoloured them (ended up using 6 different sprites). haven't even tried positioning or anything.
the colours aren't exactly as they were from the SNES colours since i'm going to have to double up a few to give it decent shading. for example i'm using one of the skin colours in the armour and one from his hair put into his pants.
The complete white looks out of place with the rest of the sprite. Do you really need parts of it looking that bright?
i dont see whats the problem with this sprite looks pretty good judt need a portrait in my opinion
