Title: Need Help (Game Script)
Post by: Xifanie on October 13, 2007, 12:28:12 pm
I'm not really the best one to do this, so I'd rather leave the job to someone more... qualified.

I'd ask any of you to go through the game script, notify me of any mistake, along with the correction. If I'd do it, I'd probably end up fixing 50% of them while creating 15-20% more.

Any volunteers? :?

You can use the Game Script on GameFaqs if you want.

Does this mean we almost have text editing now?
Title:
Post by: Xifanie on October 13, 2007, 01:53:26 pm
Err, no I have to do it all by hand. But it's not a problem for me.

... what do you mean by hand?

Hands > Keyboard > Hex Editor

He means he needs someone to find the errors and give them corrections.

I like the errors though, they're homage to the game. If you want it to be all edited, play the PSP version =p

How about: "Shut up and don't patch your game" Instead?

Really... there isn't much of a point if you want to keep everything as it already is.

If you don't have any business here, stop that or I'll just ban you from this forum section.
Title:
Post by: Chrona on October 13, 2007, 05:02:43 pm
Just giving my suggestion on it, I'm voting on all the other things though >.>

Whatever, if you don't want me, I'll just leave
Title:

Any link?

If you can't control yourself the worst I'll do is to ban you from the forum sectio. However if you can, I don't see any problem. In any case, 'leaving' would just be an excuse because you would be angry at me.

If you think I overreacted, then just don't tell me to play the PSP version again.

I was just saying that for the most part the game should be kept the way it is, since I didn't find that many errors in the first place. I really don't care though

i remember i had a list of the mistranslations of FFT...

one is ramza telling wiegraf "don't open that!" when it should be "don't listen to that" (kanji error) another problem lies in the awful lot of white knights, holy knights, divine knights and arc knights, but i don't remember the details :D

another error is Lune knight -> RUNE KNIGHT

many monsters i think have something wrong in their names

mmmh what else...

can't come out with anything else right now....

hope it helps, karsten

Well there aren't that many if you compare to the entire text in the game, but compared to the average game, it's a lot.

All vets know the errors made in FFT and I'm sure some (including me) would like to play through the game at least once with a clean script.

However, try to stop me from removing little money and I'll kill you. That one isn't charming at all, it's a torture.

You see, the original version of the game may look dull to me after that, but I'll still keep the CD: because it's the original. However I doubt I would ever play it again. :D[/quote]

Dang, we're gonna need a translator   or steal and rephrase from the PSP US version.

Dunno how Stop Breath would make sense. Oh wait, in a literal sense it would, just realized XD
Title:
Post by: Argg0 on October 13, 2007, 07:31:57 pm
It makes the enemy stop breathing, no breath = dead.

"Don't open that!" Is an error?

I always though it made sense... as in don't free it's power, a la Pandora's box.

How flexible do you want to be with the script? Do you just want to correct the errors or are you also out to actually improve the quality of the writing in general? I'll have to grab the script, but I seem to remember lots of exposition, redundancy and stilted dialogue. Is that stuff on the market as well?
Title:

Coincidence, I just finished watching Billy & Mandy's Pandora Box episode and thought exactly of that after reading "don't open that".

Quote from: "karsten"also they took away all the generics quote, substituting them with "..." (in the files if opened with an hex editor you can find a LOT of those ... in stead of speech i guess  or steal and rephrase from the PSP US version.

i think I HAVE a printed file with all the generics quotes translated by i don't know who.... OH I FOUND IT! http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/file/197339/16311 (http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/file/197339/16311)

they made a FAQ out of it :D

i tought so too, but in japanese the kanji for open and listen are almost the same, and the one actually used in the jap version is LISTEN.

So like, should I bother doing this for the rest of the script? Obviously there are a crapload of changes to be made so I'll wait to hear back before plowing through the rest of it.

Umm... the description for Libra sign is wrong. It says it is good compatibility with Pisces, Aquarius but it should be Gemini, Aquarius.

Well, the thing is that I doubt you're fully aware of what's going on here. You can't try to fix a game's translation by taking the broken one only.

I want a Japanese sentence to sound good in English while keeping the sense of it. Which you haven't done most of the time actually...

It's as if you want to write a completely different scenario. :/

I don't want to make a full re-translation, I don't want to write a new script, and I don't want to change the characters personalities either. I hope you understand.

This is why you could work with Sugnuf's translation. Most of the sentences have a weird structure, so much that I have a hard time to understand what could be say so much simpler yet not changing the meaning at all. But, I have to give it that it's a good script to base yourself on since that translation is rather accurate.

Yeah, it's alright for redundancy.

That would be of great help, but... now I have to see how I can manage to put the new text in the file

D'oh

If I need to change the pointers that links to each event location, I hope they won't be hard to find.
Title:
Post by: Asmo X on October 15, 2007, 07:37:49 pm
Yeah this is why I used the original translation. What you're planning sounds like a bloody insane amount of work. I was thinking you'd just tinker with the shoddy version until it resembled coherency.
Title:
Post by: Xifanie on October 15, 2007, 09:48:04 pm
Not only that, but I'd rather keep all those good lines.

Bad News: the Pointers Aren't located withing the events file. And because I don't don't know where there are, I cannot expand the width of an event for more text.

Good News: Most Events have extra spaced, and for the others, 2 bytes punctuation -> 1 byte will save some space and even more by removing all those extra unnecessary dots. Really they use it randomly in amounts from 3 to 12. What the fuck, 3 is by far enough, more is just wasted space.

This means that theoretically, even if you expand the script size, I shouldn't have to truncate it most of the time. And by the time you finish this, I'll try to find a solution to all this so that I don't have to truncate at all. ;/

The thing is that I've been able to edit a lot of things, but nothing completely; mostly partially, which is next to nothing.

Uh, well from what I recall...

- Effects links to abilities: Battle.bin\0x14F3F2 [word]
- Music tracks: Battle.bin\Unknown [8 bytes?] (I tried to find it again, but failed)
- Effects: Ability to create new graphics, not palette.
- Events: Ability to open new message boxes, close them, order character animation, end event, etc.
- Items graphics: Events\Item.bin (2 free item graphics slots)
- Ability Quotes: Events\SPELL.MES (err... nothing much to say :O)
- Maps: Only discovered some height panel values

Such a waste that those events never made it out of Square in an other way then screenshots. There IS lots of Japanese text for events that aren't ever seen in the game whoever... it isn't the same for maps or sprites. Maybe I could be able to one of the events for one of those and see If i can get anything interesting.

I remember that thread but completely forgot that you made it. =o oops.

Wai- You mean ma get da CD!?
Oh fugglenugget, I just thought about this... It's Alpha... that probably means the sound novels aren't gone yet. But other than that, I don't see how this CD would be good for since I have FFT in JP and that version was released before that one.

probably sound novel and char's speech are there. also the debug mode is there ready for allowing us to have 2 players battles.... also checking the differences between alfa and release might help you shed some light on the disc and variations contained in the discs

So like...

That guy has a FFT US Alpha CD of very low value.
He'll only ship to US.
It's just a burnt CD.
Not even anything special, no cover, no game box, no anything.
He has no idea of the differences between it's latter version and that one, except of the debug menu.
He has no idea of how the hardcore fans of FFT are like.

And yet... and yet... HE'S ASKING 1k!?!??!?

WHAT THE FUCK!

they pop out often on ebay. you might find one at less than 100$. but actually you can do everything with a modded psx with parallel port in the back and proper software

Quote from: AssemblyIt also shares the early model PSX design flaw; Poor laser quality.

Crap, and I already broke my laser lenses (Auto-battle Bof4 to get a strong Render). So I had to replace it with my friend's one whose PSX wasn't working much anymore. After that, I wanted to destroy half the world because no, The render doesn't gain +1 attack every 20 encounters... IT'S +1 DAMAGE GODDAMIT. So I'm like level 60 raining 3-4k damage on my enemies, it would probably take me 3 laser lenses or so to reach 4-5k damage using that weapon.

I hate you Capcom, I hate you.

This is crazy. I'm sure I could get an excellent advanced ROM hacking class for $500. Which would make me able to do tons of things.

If he keeps lowering his price at that rate, maybe in 15-20 years he'll sell it.
