Title: Guides
Post by: Lydyn on April 23, 2008, 02:43:23 pm
I'm starting to notice a lot of the same questions appearing over and over on the forums like, "how do I put ENTD files in," or "how do I do such-and-such with sprites," and so on.

We really should have guides posted somewhere or a FAQ topic or something of that nature so we can direct everyone to it and they can read up on all the answers they want. I'm even willing to make the guides myself if no one else has the time or doesn't know how to make it and all that ...

I believe Zodiac was planning on making a tutorial for the new site, but if you wanted to make one it probably wouldn't hurt anything.

I read in another post that he was busy with somethings, so I don't if it's with the site or real life and such. I just might too, when I find the time which will probably be in the next few days or so.

I'm learning PHP and working on the new site.

But I never said I was to write the tutorials, I only said there was going to be a section for that.

could you create a section for it now? I'm sure the tutorials will flow in.

Maybe not so much a section as a sticky in each forum with faqs...

us forum goers should do this.

I realized late after asking questions that many wer already answered in other topics... they were just hard to find.

I think that would be a good idea. Most other hacking forums have FAQ stickies.

hehe...

maybe some people doesn't read those threads that are so long. they'll just get bored after reading the middle pages.

just kidding!!

Could try multiple FAQ threads on more specific subjects.

Okay! Well, despite not being able to upload the danged thing yet .... I'm finally done with v0.13 and have time to write some guides. I need some help though on knowing what are some of the common questions.

I know two of them seem to be "How do I update events?" and "How do I change the formation sprites?" Any others?

A general walkthrough of making your own game with the fft patcher would be quite useful.

.. the FFT Patcher is pretty user friendly .. I wouldn't even know where to start with a general guide.

I meant the actual patching part of it, like using cdmage patching the entd files etc.

Actually, you could probably just use what I wrote in that help topic before lemme go find it real quick...

Here, you can change it around some to make it look better if you want:
Applying a patch-
First get cd mage beta- http://ftp.uevora.pt/pub/Mirrors/CDmage ... 02-1B5.rar (http://ftp.uevora.pt/pub/Mirrors/CDmage/CDmage1-02-1B5.rar)

Use it to open your image file and extract the scus and battle.bin files (battle.bin is only needed if you mess with the font section in the patcher) then open up the fft patcher and go up top and find the patch scus and patch battle options. Patch the appropiate files.

Before continuing I strongly suggest making a copy of your original image file just in case something gets messed up. Anyways open cd mage again, open the image file go to the scus file, right click and select import and find the file you patched then select it, do the same for the battle.bin if you need to. And voila it should be done.

Also if you messed with the entd part of the patcher go into it and find the generate entd files option up top. Select it and you should have 4 files pop up, go into cdmage and import the files onto the files of the same name in the battle folder.

And this is the link to that useful level simulator program I showed you, might as well put it in too. www.geocities.com/sigmahaven/lvlsimbeta.zip (http://www.geocities.com/sigmahaven/lvlsimbeta.zip)

By The way... what does the zodiac moster flag do in the entd?

Whoever has that turned on will have a lot more hp and their status will be hidden, just like the zodiac monsters.

"How do I update events?" and "How do I change the formation sprites?"

Can anyone else think of common question for me? Though I'll likely put the formation sprites as a seperate whole guide, it'd be nice to round up all the common questions so I can address them... and stuff. ^^

P.S. - I may not get any guides in today. The internet has turned into a turtle today and is crawling ... so many people on the 'node' .. don't know why lately though..

Well, wasn't as slow as I thought. Now, along with helping me with some common questions, can someone write up a PSP version of patching an image file? I'll note you as the author too, but I have no clue what those with the PSP version do.

Sure, as long as you don't mind me fixing up spelling and grammar and stuff, just so it looks more professional. ^^ And.. I need to wait for Zodiac to delete the posts on the guide topic before I post a new one anyways.

Still need help with more common questions! ^^

Well their isn't really too many hard things, of course Kyari's guide in the sprite forum could perhaps use some "Spiffing" up to be suited for a newbie form of audience. But I'll keep an eye open for hard things :D .

I'll add in pictures once my internet is working better ... it's a bit slow for me to upload anything, sadly.

Me too my computer is so slow... Hm I need to get a plugin to take screenshots on my psp.

I will try to create a tutorial section ASAP for the new beta site which will be hosted here... I'll probably add a big link or something when it will be ready.

I encourage picture tutorials but only with GIF or PNG. If needed I'll optimize the pictures for bandwidth reasons but I don't want to loose quality. We're not picturing movie scenes here or your backwards so I will refuse any JPEG or low quality pictures.

I will also post information on the tutorials formatting when the time comes.

CWcheat for the psp has one. Hold Down, Select, & Start.

Moved the comment to the proper topic! And yes, thank you guys for the comments. I'm glad you enjoy the guides. ^^ I know Zozma and ultimate_kensuke also thanked me for the guides, though I didn't think to copy their comments ... sorry guys. Thanks though!

I'll add more I suppose once I see more common problems occuring and it'd still be nice to see some PSP versions. ^^

Well, you're doing a good thing for the community. The easier we can make it to look up this sort of information the more productive we can all be in our endeavors. Thank you! =)

Voldemort7 said he wanted to see more guides. With me being more busy with two patches and real life... I know I can't write PsP ones, but I'm not sure what else to add to what's already there. I suppose adding melonhead's little instructions how to use the new "Patch ISO" would be good.

That is a good idea. I can't really think of any others off the top of my head, but if I think of any I'll let you know.

Well I can give you plenty of info on patching the PSP ISO although I already have a lot of the info in the topic I made in the War of the Lions section. Make   your guide and I guess I can add anything afterword.

If you or anyone else wants to add your guides to my FFT-dev wiki, I'm sure everyone would appreciate having a common location for all info about using FFTPatcher/etc.

Here's a link to the wiki so far: http://fftdev.istaken.org/doku.php (http://fftdev.istaken.org/doku.php)
