Here's a few of my forays into spriting. I might be getting a little too complicated with some but I've been keeping all the complex stuff on a separate layer so it won't too hard to remove. Let me know what you think so far.
Edit: Small update.
I'm having some difficulty with hair. and having a hard time color swapping.
This one on the other hand came out pretty much how i wanted, his hair is supposed to be incredibly messy.
:O im definatly liking this one
If these are intended for use in-game then they all have too many color.
Only the Mustadio based one has 16
The first one has 29 and the second, Balk based, one has 25. Sprites can only use 16 colors or everything gets all wonky. Even the in-battle sprite is using 27+
You need to consolidate some of the colors down or they're nothing more than avatars.
yeah i was aware of that, i was just posting some of my progress. i find it easier not consolidating the colors until i have everything else done.
the one thing i'm confused about is portraits. Can they be a different 16 colors from the 16 used in the battle sprite???
Curu, you and Zozma are really good at hair. If either of you read this could you throw me some tips? I wanted to make the older guy sprite have really dark hair. Preferably black or dark dark brown but I cant seem to make it look right. that's actually what i was aiming for with the gray kinda. should i use darker shades of gray? more of a brown?
any input is appreciated.
(and happy new years guys!)
Yes they can the sprite sheet will have a different palette from the battle sprite.
you could go for the "blue black" look like i did with lust
The Portrait and the Sprite Sheet use different palettes.
And, you probably already know this, for the portrait at least 4 of your color slots are probably going to be used on the hair, anything less than four colors for the hair, will lack depth.
Oh, and I like that weird looking greaser guy.
Good looking portraits Srikciv. For doing dark hair I recommend starting with your darkest tone for the hair and moving towards coloring the highlights. I feel like it is easier to get a good feel for the overall color of the hair that way.
Thanks for the tips and comments guys. I have a few updates to share.
I tried blue black and it worked pretty good.
He's supposed to be an necromancer btw.
Sprite I'm working on for this little dude.
he's like half elf/half hobbit.
His base is the 10yroldboy. I remember reading somewhere that Zozma was working on a battle sprite for him, anyone know if he ever finished it?
And lastly this dude.
I was having a lot of trouble with the hair, I was actually doing the opposite of what Cheeta suggested until I read his comment. Starting from the darkest shade def. works better
He's supposed to be really evil. Which looks better? Tips on making him look more sinister?
Hey this stuff is impressive. This latest portrait of the evil armored guy is a huge improvement. I would have to say that you have a good grasp of the art style and shading and that the far right one is all set to go, not much I would add to it really. The only thing you could do to make him a little eviler maybe would be to move the thick part of his eyebrows up one more pixel.
Your portraits are really good. You're really good at making sleazy, evil type guys; which is good because all of the current sprites are kind of too "good" looking.
Although, you actual sprite poses could use a little more shading on the pants/shirt...
Overall, good job though
Thanks Cheetah, thanks CidIII. I tried raising his eyebrow but at that point it was flying off of his face.
Portraits are fun.
Here's another one, Illusionist Kelem.
That's freaking awesome!! good job, dude!
nice

sprite for her?
thanks.
I don't have a sprite for her yet, but eventually every portrait will have one.
cant wait to see more of your portraits
The only working battle sprite I have atm is the one for my avatar but it still needs a few tweaks, at like 85% I'd say.
I'm still learning the ropes. took me FOREVER to figure out how to get the battle portraits working. had to download the japanese program.
Damn those are some pretty good portraits.
Anyways, if you have trouble don't be afraid to ask. I'll always be happy to help. I've spent those hours trying to figure out how all this stuff works. I think we all have, lol...
But, if you're having trouble just ask

.
I shall do so from now on. Thanks again.
I think I'm gunna go play some 1.3 now.
Great looking portraits dude.
I've been addicted to Vagrant Story as of late, so sadly I don't have too much new stuff. I can't believe I never played that game when it came out.
I made a new avatar and this dude. It's a little less original with the same armor and such, but he's supposed to be a knight in the same unit as the first portrait edit I did.
The neck line of his armor needs a bit of work, just a dark line doesn't really work.
Vagrant Story is a freaking amazing game. Voldemort's playthrough of it game me the motivation to finally finish it just last week.
yeah ill fix that, looking at it now it stands out horrendously .
snowfly forest took me awhile to get through lawls

^ looks like a generic shrine knight
or something
(http://www.ffhacktics.com/forum/files/kelem_440.png)
these are all very nice you have good taste for what looks good and unique for a character
these are good but they have potential to be amazing
I just noticed the ponytail on that sprite Voldemort just posted. I'm not sure I'm a fan of that.
I hated the enemies in Snowfly forest, but I got lucky and made it through really easily. My problem is that my game kept crashing on the last boss fight there, so I had to redo it like literally a dozen times.
Woah... your portraits are amazing... gasp and fall out of chair... would you mind if I used the studly knight, the evil eyebrows dude, and also the awesome black girl? This would be amazing for a project I'm working on, because I stink at making sprites. O, and I would also kill for your avatar sprite and The other version of the shrine knight.
I dig all your sprites, Srekciv, I hope you keep up the good work.
whoa that ^ post is an amalgamation of great work
I am blinded by the light
I think I saw Srekciv on the chat the other day. It would be really great to see some more work from him.
I'm still alive guys! Just been a tad bit more busy than usual. I am most certainly keeping tabs on whats going down around here. and yeah I drunkenly stumbled into chat the other night after the superbowl lol.
Anyway thanks for the comments, it gives me motivation!
I've been messing around with the patchers and text editor as of late instead of messing with spriting.
That being said I do have some portrait and sprite works in progress but they aren't at the level I'm willing to share yet.
I promise I'll get something new up on here soon!
->To HatterMadigan: I am currently working on the sprites for the two knights (Lacren & Draek) and the black girl (Kelem). When I'm done I will be submitting them to the site for everyone to use. If you don't want to wait till then go ahead =P
If some of you haven't guessed yet all of the stuff I've posted are characters from a story I've come up with. I dunno if I will have the ability to completely create a new storyline in a patch, but I may just make a patch were my custom guys make cameos or replace some of the playable NPCs like Cloud and Beowulf.
If anyone is interested,
Here's a link to some sketches my brother made of a few of the characters:

Spikes are always awesome, though difficult to sprite in FFT style.
Eh she looks like a grandmother lol.
I think she looks cool.
in the diagonal forward frame bring the boobs up 1 and left 1 and she will have the lift she needs.
looks pretty nice
Quote from: "Zozma"in the diagonal forward frame bring the boobs up 1 and left 1 and she will have the lift she needs.
...unless you're really going for that grandmother look. ^.^
Does look pretty good though. The front of her dress on the forward facing sprite looks like it could do with some pixels of texture there. That wide/long expanse of solid color seems so....flat. But then, I'm not even close to your level of skill on this so maybe I should shut the hell up...
no celdia is right. perhaps extending the dark color used on her dress to show separation between the legs would make a tighter-looking, younger outfit rather than a baggy granny gown.
the back views look pretty good imo
back view is great. looks like the back of the wizard, but narrowed up a bit.
Every good start and I would definitely take most of the advice given so far. She is a little plain looking though and needs something else going on. I would recommend throwing some purple in there, either a belt or some designs.
Thanks for the tips, here's what I've done with them.
[Edit:] top one is most recent.
Better. I like the change to the back particularly though I can't say why...the pattern on the front helps a lot though.
The pattern on the front feels to native american.... the back just looks awesome. you did a great job on that bottom right one.
Did you bring her chest up any? it doesnt seem they got bigger...hmm...
I would use a purple from the hair for a design on the front. white and purple mix relativly well iwth one of the shades from her head.
SB, look closely at the difference on the second sprite (forward-diagonal). Its a little different.
yeap, i got it

thanks celdia
straight forward sprite still looks grandma-ish but the others looks awesome. straight forward isn't used as often as most anyway though
Great progress. I actually like the front design idea. Both designs are fine, it is more that I like having a design on the front and leaving the back alone. The back view in general gets a bit cluttered with the design, in addition to what I think you are trying to do to make the butt more defined. Try having the design be purple, I think you have plenty of colors to try it.
Hmm, I might use this sprite for the female Invoker if you don't mind of course.
Of course LastingDawn I'd be flattered. She's supposed to be a magic user.
Tried with a little purple.
The purple works. Makes the back look more like a design and less like a lighting thing. I'm curious to see how the front will look for the walking frames though.
yeah I haven't tried putting the design on the walking frames yet.
I would recommend lightening up the purple a bit. I like the simpler back design as well, lower it one pixel though. This is a very unique sprite, I'm loving it. My only final concern is the rear-side view compared to the rear view. That line around the waste on the rear-side view doesn't really seem to carry over to the rear view or any other view really. It seems like you need to make the rear-side view look like it is a continuous dress like the other frames, while maintaining the slender shape of the character's body.
pretty cool. i guess i should get back to work myself
Either lightne the purple, or darken the brown, the brown is a bit contrasting for it. You might end up doing both.

I really like how that purple design will look a bit lighter. your doing a great job.
Also, i like the back, but Celdia is right. to much lighting/shading not enough design flow.
i sort of liked the white design better than the purple one really..
you might have extra colors but ive made sprites before like bolmna, that dont use all 16 colors...
She looks quite awesome. I think i may use it too...
Quote from: "Srekciv"Of course LastingDawn I'd be flattered. She's supposed to be a magic user.

I'm loving the new racial sprite.
Very nice.
xD
Srekciv: If you are still around... well I resurrect this thread because I'd like to see a finished sprite. Very nice portraiting.
