Title: [Answered] Portuguese translate
Post by: MerlinRST on October 12, 2024, 09:23:27 am
I would like to create a small mod just for myself, nothing too big, but I would like to create a story that is mine and for a better experience, it would be better if the dialogues were in my language (PTBR). I'm new to this and I don't know how to translate a game, I looked around the forum and tried something I saw, but without success. Could anyone give me guidance on which guide to follow to be able to do the translation or could you even teach me please? I don't want anything that exceptional, just being able to use the special characters we have in the country. For example: à, é, o, ç...

It requires using a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet to replace Japanese kanji characters with accented ones (I believe it's the "FFT Font Character Creator" in the Xifi-Sheets (https://ffhacktics.com/wiki/Tools#Xifi-Sheets), then a lot of editing using FFTacText for the descriptions of things like abilities, towns, jobs, as well as unit quotes, rumors, proposition messages, and so on. Then you need to do a hell of a lot of event editing using either EntryEdit or (more likely) EasyVentSuperPerfect. All of these are available on the Tools (https://ffhacktics.com/wiki/Tools) page.

And if your language tends to require more text than the English language does, you have to account for all the times it goes beyond the width limit of a message window or the times it increases the size of the text so much that it goes past the size limits of a certain section of the disc (for TacText editing) or the size limits of an already nearly full event.

Doing a translation of the game can take a few years to do, so don't go in expecting it to be quick and painless.

Dont forget the words that are baked into images too, like the status names in frame.bin and all that.

Overall, a full translation is not a small undertaking by any means. The few that have been done did indeed take years to achieve, and even then I dont think any of them are technically "complete" because there's still a few images we dont know how to edit last I checked. But yeah, no such thing as a "small mod" for a full translation of the game, unfortunately.

Perfect! Just having a direction to follow is enough to know where to start. I'll take a look at the tools and how they work. Little by little I will try until one day I learn (I hope). Thank you very much!

I understand. It seems like I should drastically lower my expectations since I have no experience with such tools. Anyway, I'll take a look and see what I can find.

Definitely feel free to give it a go! We say these things to set expectations, not to discourage. If you need help, reach out here or in the discord, we are always happy to explain things (a lot of this can get complicated!). Gogeta recently (I use that loosely lol) put out a German translation of the game built on TLW, and he was very active in the community, including helping find new info to help with translation mods!
