Another question one might add is, would it be used more often if it was given straight-forward damage like the wizard spells?

They would be used more if the accuracy was upped a bit.  By me, at least.

I agree. I hardly ever used them because of the low hit rate. They are really only useful for doing big damage to targets with high HP, if they hardly ever hit then there's little point to them at all. ^_^

I personally upped the hit rate and greatly reduced MP cost, and now I find it them pretty handy little couple of spells.  They were never really worth it against regular enemies when I played standard FFT.

I was seeing if I was biased against percentage-type spells, really (not a fan of them). Still want more opinions if anyone will offer them, but I was basically debating changing them to more powerful versions of the [elemental] 2 & 4 spells (not by a ton though) ... would people prefer this or just a reduction in MP and bump to percentage?

i find them practically useless as they originally are, they miss way too much.
id rather them be as accurate as normal black magic spells, but cost more because then they would have much greater damage potential. i might simply make them dark elemental spells. they sure look like it anyway, plus there are enough effect files to make 3 or 4 levels of Demi. another idea (what i did in my patch) i made them way more accurate, but only hit 1 panel and cost less mp than normal black mage elemental spells. and after doing that i created demi3 and 4. and also made all 4 darkness elemental so i can make zodiac monsters null darkness thus being immune to such cheap damage.

I'd prefer this with a bump in percent and possibly a reduction of CTR.  MP cost is eh.

There's enough straight damage spells in the game already imo.  AoE %-based damage is a nice touch to allow the time mage some moderate magical offense without crossing over into already existing territory.
