Title: Battle.bin? Unit.bin?
Post by: Desril on November 05, 2008, 06:31:58 pm
I ripped my FFT.iso straight from my UMD, I can play the game off it, I can edit it, etc. but I never found any of these .bins where all the sprites etc. are, so what did I do wrong?

sprites are in the BATTLE folder

unit.bin is only their menu sprite 1 frame

I wasn't able to find anything, but I just found out about the fftpack.bin file, so that should do it.

Hmm, well I've found the .bins, but for the http://www.ffhacktics.com/psx/tutorials.php?id=1 (http://www.ffhacktics.com/psx/tutorials.php?id=1) tutorial, the sprite editor won't let me open .bin, only .spr or .sp2

You need to type it in.

...I was doing that again to quote what it was saying...apparently I was in the wrong folder...I feel like an idiot.  I probably should delete this topic so I don't seem so retarded...

Yeah, but now the problem is that I get an error when trying to replace Ramza with the sprite that I'm trying to use (Dart).  I open CD Mage, open the FFT iso, and there is no "battle folder", if I use umdgen to extract the fftpack.bin where it is and FFTpatcher to decrypt it, then fix the files, rebuild the fftpack, and then replace the old fftpack with the new one, the iso ends up being about 380mb instead of 400 and the game won't load at all...

If I try to replace the formation screen sprite I can do everything until I import the edited .bmp...it says "Unhandled exception has occurred in your application.  If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue.  If you click Quit, the application will close immediately.

Format of the executable (.exe) or library (.dll) is invalid.

Details                            Continue    Quit"

Continue just leaves it like it was before I imported.

Finally, the last problem is that I can't get names of jobs/skillsets/abilities to change in battle.  Tactext didn't help, I've been through every page, and I changed all the mentions of them to say what I want it to say, but it didn't help.  I can figure out HEX decently, but I can't find ANYTHING with that hex program on the sticky so unless someone cares for a more detailed tutorial, that's out.

... there is a battle folder in the FFT ISO. If you can't find it, you've either got a bad one or it's not an .img file (ISO/Image is the same thing).

For TacText, you need to select PSX->Patch ISO... - Again, though, I suspect you have the wrong ISO. Without the "Battle" folder, your FFT would be without sprites all together. Screen shots would help a lot.

Here's a pictures of the iso in CD Mage, all the folders are open.  There is a battle folder inside the fftpack, but I can't edit that without the error that I posted above (the first one)

Oh dear, you're messing with the PSP version? Well, I haven't a clue then. I always edit the PSX version ... more room technically, and it's easier to mess with events in the long run. Though I suppose the PSX doesn't have as many maps ... but oh well.

CDMAge for PSP jeez, we need a psp guide...i should make one

You need to Use UMDGen for the psp version

Also, most of the files your looking at coem from fftpack.bin, unit.bin fortunatly isnt one of them, but battle.bin in the psp version is almost not usually used, in fact i cant recall a time when a normal psx file(such as world.bin) is directly used

I've also tried UMDGen, if I try to edit sprites then after I replace the fftpack the file is suddenly ~30mb smaller than it was.

make sure your not editing cloud

Place them in the battle folder and recompress the ftpack with the latest patcher(.271 or something) then reimport it with umdgen...make sure you select import file or add file or one of those two...otherwise it imports wrong; also use umdgen that is the latest...Voldemort was trying to use version 2 when i using 5...lol big difference

Quote from: "Desril"I've also tried UMDGen, if I try to edit sprites then after I replace the fftpack the file is suddenly ~30mb smaller than it was.

that because umdgen takes out some of the "packing peanuts" as it where and there no way to not have that happen other than to not edit the fftpack in anyways shape or size

I have a similar problem...

Shishi hangs up when I type "UNIT.BIN" (and any other .BIN for that matter) at the Open menu. I extracted the .BIN files from the original ISO using CDmage. Similarly, certain copies of my FFT ISO do not open from the Import menu, while others work fine. Anyone know what's causing these problems? I'm rather new to this patching thing; I've been at it for only a couple days now.

Specifically, I'm trying to replace sprites at the formation screen and the tutorial is confusing me. Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I'm actually using an FFT IMG file, not ISO. It's the original PSX version.

its much less trouble if you just download this japanese program that lets u edit wldface.bin (the menu portraits) and unit.bin

http://www.ffhacktics.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=407 (http://www.ffhacktics.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=407)
the one i posted there

just play around with it even tho the buttons just say ????? they are pretty easy to figure out, one exports a bmp, one imports it, the button below the picture display is the save button

the files must be 16 color bmp's or it wont import

Thanks. I've downloaded the FFTEVGRP app, and I'm starting to think I'm in way over my head. UNIT and WRLDFACE BINs open just fine, but where do I get all these BMP images? Do I pull them out of the SPR files?

if you export a sprite to bmp, you can cut it down to the same size as one of the images in unit.bin (just export one of them to see the size)

then all u gotta do is save the cut bmp in 16 color bmp to import it

Most unique sprites that you dont get in your party are not in unit.bin. evtchr.bin is for special animations, like during events(the knight in gariland holding his hand out) so unless your editing events you dont need it.

if you are editing events, zodiac posted a tutorial on how to put your custom sprites into it. check the main page(not the forum main page). it should be under tutorials.

The ones you mentioned above dont have unit.bin entrys cause...well they dont need one, they are never in your party in the original game. that is why your hacked characters (i.e., characters using zodiac beasts as sprites, or even a custom sprite) show up as a chapter 1 ramza sprite on the formation screen.

I made a video tutorial about how to put your own sprites into unit.bin. but you still have a limited amount of space. it is in the topic "SentinalBlade's Tutorials" and is called 'Editing Unit.Bin, the real way."
