I always thought it was a crown based on the portrait and all but the NW sprites. I always sort of thought he was supposed to look like a lion which I guess lions are kings even as demons?

Hashmalum and Shemhazai actually appear to be the only two Zodiac that appear similar to their Western Zodiac. (The Lucavi appear to be based on various "ascendants" from Hinduism) Hashmalum and Shemhazai are unique though, actually appearing to be very similar to Leo and Sagittarius. Leo is normally displayed as being a leader (which is probably why he has a Crown) As well Vormav may have been slightlly ineffective, but he was still able to lead his troops to Murond Death City unimpeded.

He's definitely one of the less creepy looking Lucavi, I think Queklain (sp?) wins that award. One of the best comments I've seen on FFT playthroughs was when one guy said "And this is why you don't play with demonic rituals kids, because you will blow up... and then turn into a huge fat guy."
