does this portrait still need improvement or what?
I was thinking of replacing off the one at the downloads section, should it be?

Personally, I prefer Curu's portrait.

But this is nice, the colors seem a bit off though.

it's palette's are from Worker8's
and the reason why I want to replace Curu's is it doesn't exactly look similar to the sprite because of its details

anyways
It was actually made from FFV's Iron Giant
well the sprite in FFT may be actually based from it

The one we have is fine. Of all the sprites that need new portraits that is definitely not one of them.

Well, I actually like it.
It needs to match the sprite's colors better and you should try to texture it more like the Steal Giant portrait.

Curu's portrait is really good, but it hardly comes close to matching the FFT style.
It matches the Breath of Fire style more.

In what way?

I think Curu's portrait fits awesomely. The beauty and detail might not match humanoid portraits, but it definitely fits for monsters/Lucavi.

Also, to be honest without actual malice, that portrait does need a bit of work. It reminds me of an earlier portrait I had. The depth is a bit pillowy. It lacks the 3D charm.

Thanks. About time someone said something ;) I'm editing it as I go, but I'm sure it's the coloring, and the pauldrons

My portrait's face isn't good or the Iron Giant's "Face?"

Changing port to go back to basics, then adding armor :) Thanks for the honesty.

What it needs is shading more in accord with rest of the FFT portraits.
You've got pillowing going on.

Quote from: "Asmo X"In what way?

The shading is different from all the other portraits in FFT and it doesn't really resemble the sprite with all the extra little stylized nick-knacks all around it's 'face'.

I think you're being a little pedantic by saying the shading isn't similar to the other FFT sprites. It's more than close enough. And I can buy the stuff around the face because it's a close-up.

What is the second portrait from? Are you trying to say Curu's portrait resembles that one stylistically? If so you are way, way off.

The only problem I have with Curu's portrait are the eyes looking too dull, they should be glowing like the original Steel Giant, and just like the sprite itself too. There are even two free colors in that portrait.

I don't think I'm being pedantic at all. The shading she is using is much cleaner than the official sprites.
To me it just looks too different from the rest of them.

Also, I just don't like all the extra crap that isn't in the sprite.
Reminds me more of Huitzil from Darkstalkers with his face removed than an Iron Giant.
If you take the portrait by itself, it doesn't immediately strike you that it is supposed to be an Iron Giant.

Second portrait is from Breath of Fire IV.
You have to be blind not to see the similarity to her shading style.
In fact her style looks more like a cross between FFT and BoF4 now that I'm looking at them together.

Blind or using common sense. The BOF portrait is shaded using big, flat areas of colour. The only part of Curus portrait that could be compared to it is the forehead. The rest is shaded with more complexity, more gradually and with more depth. Compare the use of black shades. And all this is aside from the fact that the palette is more akin to FFT levels of saturation rather than the BOF portrait which is almost incandescent by comparison

Look closer at the smaller parts, the only reason they look different from the forhead plate is because there's so little space to work with.
That long part that widens even has a relatively big splotch of the light shade in it.
One of the defining features of the FFT style the blotchy, almost watercolor style shading it. Curu's portrait lacks that.
Obviously, there are differences with the BoF4 style, but I never said her style is just like it. I said the way she shades reminds me more of BoF4 than FFT. The difference to the BoF4 style and the similarity to the FFT style is why I called it a cross of the two.

Check this out.
This is Curu doing the FFT style perfectly.

How on earth does it remind you of the way BOF does it? there is not a single dark shade on the BOF portrait. Not an ounce of depth whatsoever. What exactly are you trying to prove here anyway? You said Curu's portrait has splotches but that FFT portraits have....blotches? What's the difference? You've done a better job of proving that FFT portraits look like BOF portraits with this talk of splotches and blotches and what the fuck ever.

My wording sucked, but you know damn well what I meant.
blotchy, almost like water color = FFT Style
big splotch = big, flat area of colour =/= FFT Style
And, again I never said the complete style of BoF was what reminded me.
I said clear as day that I was referring to the shading style as what I found reminiscent.
