Change it to white/gray, something like what I did. I think it looks better ^^

Damn, I wish I noticed your suggestion earlier, jimmy. But I think I've [almost] got it now. Basically it's a bronze hoop that begins above his earlobe and extends around the back.

We could always get rid of the earring.

I updated my previous post: cleaned up the shading on the ear and earring a little bit. I dunno if it's ready yet, but I think it's at its best now.

Quite honestly... I hate it.  It looks like a cowboy hat with a feather in it, oversized boots, and maybe a biker's torso with the vest and arms.  The beard could look a lot cleaner too, I'm sure.  I don't feel that any of it matches the portrait.  I tend to like your stuff, but this is far from one of your best.  (Though that is all a matter of personal opinion and the others might very well disagree.)

Okay.. I guess I'll pass the spritework to others..

To be honest, too, I can't focus on sprites atm.. :(

Work needs to be done on the hat, but I think the head is good and that the body is okay. Probably loose the feather in the hat and figure out to do bigger edges or something. A few good hat references would be nice.

Hmmm....fix the beard and change out the hat (start with removing the feather). I like it, since it makes sense to me (big ol' pirate boots, Bikke's weird vest-thing), but it needs work.

Look at the pirate hats on this website to get an idea for hat shape. And note that the hat I pretty much used for the portrait most resembles the one on this page called "3 Black Skallywagg".

With those fixes mentioned above, I think this sprite will work out ^^

I feel like I'm working without necessity here, but here's the fixed earring. It is now moved further away from the shirt, making it clearer, in my opinion.

Let's see if I can actually post in this thread again.  The last time I tried, some sort of glitch prevented it.

I don't know if you got the pm, MiKeMiTchi, but I don't think you should give up on the sprite.  That was never my intent to start with.

I do not think a vest looks good on him.  I picture Bikke as wearing a shirt with the sleeves torn from it due to wear and tear.  This picture is reinforced by the portrait being made for him.  Perhaps try a once somewhat dressy but now ragged shirt.

I think the length of the boots could use a little adjusting.  They look like they go past his knees.  Of course if you want it to look like they do, then I suppose they are fine...

As for the head...  grab a head that already has a decent sized beard and then slap on the Oracle hat.  Then start converting the Oracle hat to a more custom look.  I think that approach would wind up looking better.

By no means do I think you are incapable of doing this sprite.  I just rather dislike your original concept for it.  Please keep working on it.

Hmm...Is it just me or does the earring look tuck behind his ear? Hmm...

The backside of the earring (all the way to our right) is supposed to be tucked behind the ear. The left side isn't. I'll work on it. And the ear shape looks really weird now, so I'll try and fix that as well.

As for what Silvas is suggesting, I definitely support the idea of a ragged, dressy shirt. The sleeveless shirt was fine in the original game, but I dunno how it'd turn out here. And I definitely agree about the head: take a bearded fellow (I'm thinking Dycedarg) and slap a modified hat on it. Or work on it without the hat and place it on there at the end or something.

Alright mav ^^
Actually, I think sleeveless isn't bad at all. Hmm...But captain is more to short/long sleeve right? Sleeveless is more for his loyal crews ^^

It was too hard to make a convincing earring pierce without changing out the colors.

I think you need to add/change a few pixels of his ear to earring, for the left side. That way, it'll look more like pierce into the ear. ^^

yep. . . if we would base it on facts just because balthier's earring in the portrait in placed that way it does not mean it will make it look like an earring or is correct. . . earrings are pierced to the ear through the earlobe. . . what bugs me is how they made balthier have correct earrings in the FMV but wrong in his portrait. . . check it out. . .

to fix this we need to adjust the colors used and come up with atleast 3 shades of white or grey and or make him black beard so that he will have the greys needed to make the earring shine a better colored black hat. . . and free up colors for a new shirt

It's the angle of the face and the size of the portrait that makes this earring style very tough. When the thinnest you can go is one pixel, there's only so much depth you can show.

I'd like to change its colors, but I'm gonna try to get the shape down first. Take a look. It pierces the earlobe and cover the rest of it, loops back around, and ends up right behind the piercing...I think.
