Title: Playstation ISOs: Burn them?
Post by: Havermayer on December 25, 2008, 08:07:29 pm
Should I burn the Playstation Isos that I download?  The main thing for me is performance.  Is there more lag and loading times if you burn them?  And what is the best PS1 emulator?  I use PSX 1.13.

Thanks.

Just use the ISO as is.

Yeah, but having a bunch of them will take up a ton of gigs of HD space.  That's why I'd just burn them.  But if it hurts performace (eg. creates more lag) then I won't do it.

Maybe you must use the ISO.

Not completely sure since I've never tried to emulate a game directly from the CD but I'll give some general info.

Reading the data from the CD will be slower than reading the data directly from the HD. Always. This MAY cause lag when the game needs to load data(screen transitions, attacks/effects, cut scenes).

As for the best emulator, most would recommend either PSX or ePSXe.
PSX is much more simple to use, and isn't a memory hog like ePSXe. Requires very little setup.
ePSXe has many plugin options, to enhance sound and graphics. It looks and sounds a lot better and closer to the original game. Requires a lot of setup.

yes, I agree with you. I don't want playing with CD-ROM again, cuz, 16 days ago my CD-ROM is demage.

I'd suggest archiving the ISO's on DVD if you have a space issue. Plus if you're HD takes a dive it's good to have them backed up. ^_^

there is more lag if you're playing off CD instead of an iso on the hard drive.  With epsxe, the game (sound and everything) skips a bit every time a spell is cast.

I recommend the above of just backing up the files but keeping the games you want to immediately play still on the hard drive.

if you really dont want them taking up all the space on your HD but want to be able to store them somewhere without worrying about lag then you can just invest in a Flash Drive to put them all on

That is actually a good idea from Jacob.

So, I settled on a compromise idea.  I burn all of the ps isos to cds since I have dozens of extra blank cds lying around.  But when I want to play a PS game, I then extract the iso and then play from my HD.

:D

That's perfect cause the mem cards are too small to care about anyways.
