In the front view it seemed to work, now it really stands out in a "not so good" way.

You are using the yellow boots and belt though, right? There's so much green on this sprite that you need the yellow to balance it out.

Believe me, I played with yellow so much already that I know this is the best option, if I would raise the color to "stand out" it would be too saturated, and when it's a little too dark, it looks like green, I think it's good as it is now.

Yes, you should also try changing the flesh color on the hair.

Because the highlight is supposed to be a heavily desaturated colour, and because of the high level of reflectivity, the colour is supposed to resemble the light source rather than the material doing the reflecting?

That still doesn't work here. In a case like this where the sheen came from a flesh tone because the original hair color was blonde. It would be more appropriate to use that shade of yellow here. or make the shades of green slowly change to a color that doesn't make the sheen look totally wrong.

I had to do a female squire with purple hair without changing anything on the sprite and managed to keep the flesh colored sheen but purple can easily be blended into a light plum color, with this green it just wont work that way.

Also, I think ppl commonly use the flesh tone because that is the standard for most if not all the sprites that were originally in the game. I don't use it with anything other than blonde hair because it just looks crappy to me.

thats my point vanya, it was used that way because most of the sprites were blondes. blonde is a clever trick for games like this where sprites only use 16 colors. it allows them an extra shade for the hair without sacrificing a precious color.

as an example, i had to use 5 colors for deis' hair and sadly it seems pretty hard for me to drop it to 4 without drastically changing the "texture" of the hair. If i were to make her a blonde i'd be able to free up at least one color... But i used the same trick they did for hair on her skin. Her 3rd skin tone is a shade from her boots lol..

The thing I've found most often is that with a little optimization most sprites don't need to use that skin tone for highlights.

thats true, and that doesnt just apply to hair tho.

You cant, without pixel mod, make Lancers look good with dark armor because their lightest shade is white used by the eyes, but thats easy to change.

I'm not an expert on colour theory or whatever but if you have a surface that is very reflectable, it doesn't matter what colour it is because the sheen will look more like the source of light. You get away with the flesh colour because its nicely desaturated. Izlude has brown hair and uses the flesh coloured highlight.

It works well with brown too most of the time. It's like Zozma said it depends on if the colors have the proper gradation towards the skin tone. If the highlight is too abrupt it doesn't look good to me unless the material is intended to be shiny. This is partially due to opinion, though. And about the light source, most of the scenes in the game take place outdoors during the day when the light is white. There are fewer instances of battles indoors with candle or torch light and even fewer ones at sunrise/sunset when the light would seem yellow-orange-ish. Sorry if I come off overly technical or critical, I used to be an art major once upon a time. The one really good argument for the skin tone highlights is that it matches the the original game's style, and anyone that don't like it can take five minutes to adjust it if they feel the need. ^_^

Wow...Good to know this Vanya. Thanks ^^ But I have to admit, blonde is really clever trick like Sir Zozma said. The skin tone blends in smoothly. So now, the sprite is looking good but the highlight is abit problem. So I guess have to try swap?

Kage I have a suggestion:

You could use that red plume instead of the feathers perhaps? It would make it look more distinct from the Onion Knight

also, the chestplate is inconsistent between the diagonal and forward views. And you should add some darker shading to the helmet. Looks pretty good though

Thanks, I will be sure to use it.

Btw, how should I name it? I thought of couple things: Noble Knight, Onion Paladin/General, or simply Paladin

Oh. Is it supposed to be an update of the Onion Knight or something? I thought it was just a remake of the normal knight

It can be both, with his helm people will think it's Onion something, but I actually wanted to name it Paladin or Noble Knight, some high ranked knight you know.

The helmet with the red plume was worn by Centurions. Perhaps that would be a better name

Or Spartan perhaps? But he then should be more non-armored I think, and helm should be changed.
