Also working on the sprite, right now I'm only doing Crono. I have plans to do an Ashley Riot sprite as well. Comments/criticism welcome.

Hey very nice!

You're gonna make a fully working sprite of Crono?

For the portrait you're using way too much colors, 16 is the maximum you can use. I don't think it will be that much trouble reducing it to that though, even if right now you're using 36+.

And the resolution is doubled. You should shrink it to 50%-50% and zoom instead of editing doubled sized.

Anything is possible as long as it is within the hardware's limits. (ie. disc space, RAM, Video RAM, processor, etc.)

<Raijinili> remember that? it was awful

So my ignorance of the technical limits DOES show. I just like to draw the sprites, I am a total newbie at what the specifications are for importing the sprites into the actual game. Is there a checklist or something I can follow?

Portrait size: 32x48
Max colors: 16 colors (4bit)
RGB: 6bit (that means colors are multiple of 4, like 120 red, 128 green and 96 blue)

It's nice to double the size to show on the forum though or for avatars.

A spriting program is very useful to achieve those tasks, or will just be faster than other programs. I use GraphicsGale; I made my new avatar you can see this morning/afternoon using that program.

Thanks Zodiac.
Halving the colors used makes the portrait look terrible, I know there must be a more graceful way to do it (at least I hope so) than just resaving it as a 16 color bitmap (I just used MSPaint). I'm not familiar with GraphicsGale, but if you could point me in the direction of some knowledge resources, I will try and not post a million questions for you  :) . Thanks for your help.

Looks good, but it looks like the colors you are using are bright compared to the rest of the game.

Looks like your spriting skills are good, especially since portraits can be pretty tough. It wont take you long to get used to the style of the FFT stuff though and then you will really be rolling.

Oh and another specification you should know. The background color (that off tan color) counts as one of your 16 colors, but you can also use it as part of your portrait. Though for sprites the solid black counts as one of your 16 colors as well, but anything you make that color will be translucent.

Ok, I took him down a few notches. GraphicsGale says that there are 16 colors used and I scaled him down as well. It was easier than I thought to get into GraphicsGale. Also, I toned down the super bright hair a bit.  So here is revision 1. Let me know what you think.

Thanks everyone, I'm glad you all like it. I will be working on the sprite and starting on Ashley Riot's portrait this week. I'll be posting updates as I go.

Very good, I'm definitely looking forward to seeing the sprite. Ashley Riot will be awesome as well. I have actually been working on a sprite for him for a while but haven't made much progress. I will show you what I have when you get to that point though.

Here is revision 2. I touched up the hair and added the bandana knot once again, because I like it. Also made him my avatar. Sprite work has begun in earnest.

Dear god........ its beautiful.
I think Crono would wind up using Samurai Swords, and have lightning  magic for skills. I do believe Crono does get Life as a spell too i think.
