The Lounge / Re: FFXIV: Return to Ivalice
September 04, 2017, 01:33:33 pm
That is pretty darn cool. I'm not into mmos but XIV is probably one of the few I'd try getting into nowadays. Ivalice, Midgar, and Spira have always been my favorite FF worlds. Wonder if they'll have a actual tactics gameplay portion, or maybe as a minigame like Triple Triad.

Spriting / Re: Lion's Bizarre Spriting Adventure
September 02, 2017, 11:35:26 pm
Well I've made some progress. Honestly reworking the spritesheet has been quite easy but deciding on palettes has been almost absurdly rough for the second row. With how the sprite is currently set up finding colors that look nice and fit what I want hasn't been easy, and I'm still not satisfied with what I have currently. Anyway here is another update. Suggestions to edits or color schemes are  appreciated.

Colors (from left to right)
0. Background
1. Shading (only used for shading the eyes currently)
2. Highlight (used for whites of the eyes, wings, slightly for the dress)
3-6. Hair colors
7-10. Skin colors (lightest skin also acts as a highlight in the hair)
11-15. Wings and dress (wings only use 11-13 dress uses all. 11 and 14 are also used as eye colors)

As I currently have it the colors that work best for hair are natural hair or brightly colored hair. For the wings/dress cool colors (blue, green, purple, etc.) look best-remember the eyes also get color from there. Brown or gold/yellow should also look decent. Red, pink, and white don't fit well as dresses with the current structure, unfortunately. Or at least I couldn't work them well.

1. Fey or Fairy. I personally adore auburn hair, especially on ladies, and the redish color makes nice contrast with green.

2. Pixie. Well The idea was a punk fairy, but unnatural hair colors and dark colors in general aren't looking too awesome. Feeling kinda meh overall about this one, but it's not bad. The hair might be a little too pink.

3. Titania. Originally I wanted a blond, white dress angel here, but the dress has 5 shades and it's hard to keep white clean-looking with noticeably different shades. So i settled on the fairy queen. I like this one too.

4. Navi. It's been a bit of a battle finding blues that don't clash or mix too much. It's not perfect and I'm not happy with it currently. I feel a slight edit to the sprite overall would bring out the quality Navi deserves. Might be best to make her a unique spritesheet with this as a model.

5. Bubblegum. This was a happy accident I made while toiling through colors. I'm calling it Bubblegum because the classic pink and minty green.

I only added the 4th and 5th palettes for the showcase, only 1-3 are really important, to be distinct and appealing.

UPDATE: Forget all that jazz. I've made 3 improvements to the palette/design. Also i'm going to keep goin into depth over my palettes so interested persons can make easy changes, unless it's more annoying than helpful.
1. Palette

I've replaced an excessive skin color with another highlight dedicated to the hair and eyes. Why is this important? Well it removes the skin tone from the hair, the wings color from the eyes, and provides a customizable color to accent the hair. Together these allow for much more dress and hair colors without bright pink on the face or peachy skin admidst raven hair. Here's the breakdown.
0. Background
1. Shading (for eyes only)
2. Highlight (wings and whites of eyes)
3. Highlight B (hair and eyes accent)
4-7 Hair
8-10 skin
11-15 Wings/Dress (wings use 11-13 dress uses all.
14 is also primary eye color)
It's nice to note that 2. will no longer affect the dress either. I'm reworking the design slightly so that very bright color isn't involved. This will add some more distinction between the wings and dress and also makes darker colors (and the sprite in general) look better. Heres a sample of new sprite concept with improvements and various palettes. These palettes aren't final as i just threw together colors that looked underwhelming with the previous design.

3A and 3B should be completely unused. You can also use others with limited use such as Simon, like you said.

The submissions haven't been updated in years, can't remember the reason, but there was a reason. But I'm sure someone will find use for it one way or another, I'll probably use it in a EVTCHR, cuz Link
Oh that explains why there's no new works in there. I had wondered bout that but assumed most spriters had left and lost interest. About Link I'll keep that in mind and see what I can do about an extra Navi or even Tael palette lel.
EDIT: Wait...isn't Tael a guy? Hmm no Tael for this sprite then.

Thanks Elric  :) Yes the palette looks horrid in the version i downloaded as a base. My only guess is someone must have changed the color depth or some tomfoolery made Gg condense the colors in that bizzare order. Either way when I'm finished it'll all be nice and neat, easy to customize. I had an idea to possibly add another shade to the dress so my palette may change a little if that ends up looking better. The goal for this project is to be my first submission to the site (with signatures of the others who did the initial work of course).

Spriting / Re: Lion's Bizarre Spriting Adventure

Okay so update on that unfinished sprite i was talking about. Started working on it yesterday and i don't have too much but I'll share it anyway. The sprite i'm fixing/finishing was started by Rfh and the last update I'm using as a base is in this post. A hearty thanks to everyone involved in doing the hard work for this sprite!
http://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?topic=8230.msg169953#msg169953

At first glance It isn't too far from completion and looking in Shishi the animations look really spot on! (to me anyway) So I'm a bit sad I won't have serious body proportion or positioning work to do. What it does sorely need is a severe palette reorganization, fixing many wierd design choices like eye/highlight color mixed in skin, skin color mixed with wings and clothes, the chest region being...well just bizarrely colored, a lack of any dark shading color, unfinished portrait, the list goes on. So I'm cracking my fingers to fix all these.

I'm liking these 2 new palettes (1 and 3. palette 2 is a touch up of the original but I'll change it). I finished the top row and then some. Here are the results vs the original.

Not much i know, but how's it looking so far?

  FFT Proper v1.01 should delete Summoner's Golem。

That's actually a fair idea. Not sure if you're aware John, but  Golem breaks the ai and gives them 7 extra chromosomes. This post explains and provides a halfway solution to the problem if you're interested. http://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?topic=10381.msg220734#msg220734
Or leave it as is or give it only to the Ai. As always i only present friendly suggestions and opinions  :D

EDIT: Also Wuwuwu you should seriously provide reasoning and constructive comments over complaints

Well speed save costs a ton of jp to learn. Accumulate has a mp cost and charge time now. And I noticed half charge but most spells cast faster now so it isn't as strong anymore. But I guess if John wanted he could tack on the pa/ma/sp min/max hack to limit their abuse. Not that I find myself able to abuse them or Yell with the charge time and mp costs.

EDIT: unless by noncharge you are referring to Calculators math skills. To which I can say I'm pretty sure less spells can be cast via mathematics, only weaker ones. I will say that enemy mages keep nuking me with Fire 4 and reflect doesn't stop it but *shrugs* what can you do. Not a big issue imo

Hmm oh I didn't explicitly say but both unit.bin and wldface.bin images need to be 4bp, or 16 colors in only one palette row. In Graphicsgale there is the All Image tab, click that and select color depth, change it to 4bp. I don't use paint that much, but i'm sure they have a color depth option as well. The actual main, full spritesheet should stay at 16bp (or is it 8? *shrugs*) though to allow alternate palettes.

PSX FFT Hacking / Re: Question about ARH capabilities
August 30, 2017, 01:07:08 am
Hello Webmistress. I had a follow up question about arh (still haven't tested it yet, sorry!) Is it possible to make an ability recquire a non-equipment item to just sit in your inventory? My reasoning being i have been considering changing Odin or Clop effects to a custom Yojimbo summon later on

The idea being the player having to buy a very expensive item to be able to summon him. Alternatively I could have it recquire an unused weapon type or a dmg=gil lost formula I saw around that may or may not work. Can it be done and which method would work best you think?
31
Well the formation screen for pre-battle and job wheel draw their Sprites and portraits from the unit.bin and wldface.bin, respectively. The newest version of Shishi can directly change these files, but if you're importing custom sprites you'll likely need to crop and paste the unit.bin and wldface.bin bmps for them. It's really easy if you need more info on that.

EDIT: Now that I'm off work i found some links to help you. The first one explains how to get the standard unit.bin image ignore the rest of that post about the portrait
http://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?topic=6702.msg181747#msg181747
This second post explains how to do the portrait (which will be 32x48 dimensions) http://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?topic=11756.msg220824#msg220824

As the first mentions you will need to use ms paint or a similar app like my preferred Graphicsgale <3 you can google it if you like.

Made good progress into Ch.2, just got Agrias. So update on my thoughts. I notice it's more of a damage race, like in the vanilla. One question I have is are enemies preset with level and equipment or did you set them to scale with the party? I ask because for awhile now every enemy has been 5-7 levels higher than mine. At the execution grounds the enemy average is 21 and my party's is 16 (excluding Agrias who comes in as 22). Static enemy levels encourage grinding to make them easier, but with very low jp costs grinding seems less necessary or appealing. Wondering if I should grind to catch up or if that will only raise difficulty as the ai scale with and get better gear.

So not sure what I am doing wrong... I patch a clean fft wotl iso and apply this patch using ppf. loaf the game then when it gets to the square enix screen it crashes? anythoughts? Ive had success patching and play emergence.

This is for PSX, not wotl on the psp.

I've been waiting for this simple but meaningful change since I started playing FFT mods, wish everyone had your vision.
Thank you!

Haha yes me too. I'm still updating slowly, but recently most of my time is spent trying to self-teach ASM. Also a few important irl things to prepare for. But slow and steady wins the race. Thanks for the support!

Well i have it in next to the template hack, yeah. If i don't need it with the spreadsheet in the vba that's one less worry.

I am getting error messages though. Upon opening the spreadsheet, I have Excel 2016 btw, it immediately takes me to the vba with this error message. It also opens the sharedXifisheets module with this portion highlighted.

I assume that highlighted portion may be problematic. Could it be because I'm using a newer Excel? Or perhaps I'm missing some special dll or the like?

If I ignore it and move to the spreadsheet it gives me this error. I'm pretty sure it might be a missed high-five from our excels.
Let me know what i can do to help; i'll keep looking into it myself of course. Thanks!

EDIT: I downloaded the non-blank version and it doesn't cause the vba error, but still won't allow importing without the fft file list txt...which i have right next to it. Conundrum?

Got your hack template tool and it looks amazing! But i guess I'm stupid because I'm having difficulty. I can't load any xml without a fft file list. I have one from the tool's thread and another I drafted up, but I can't seem to place it in the correct location? It might go without saying but i haven't worked with vba or intricate excel functions. I spent some time researching, trying, researching more but it always imports that file as a module in the wrong folder.

Would anyone mind posting screenshots of your FFT File List and where/how to import it correctly to the vba? Sorry for the inconvenience.

Just got past Dorter slums earlier today, didn't have too much trouble there. At first I wasn't super sure about the 0 jp idea but after seeing it in practice I heartily approve. I might steal use this for my hack. I also notice that jobs unlock very quickly. Which isn't bad really, especially since jp costs are low enough you still pick up a couple abilities first. Also your Gil rewards and costs are spot on so far. There's only a few nitpicks I have so far. There are a lot of wandering Calculators about, they aren't a big problem just kinda odd seeing them at lv3-ish. Black Gob's turn punch has enlarged aoe, it isn't that strong though but i found it odd. Knights are the best early class, hands-down. They are superbly tanky (which is the point i imagine). Monk's repeating fist usually 1-shots anything I've met so far (besides Knight). Maybe tone it down or edit bare-handed damage; they do seem to be physical glass cannons though so if it's intentional to wreck faces then pump up it's mp cost? Besides that i'd encourage increasing status' Ct so they last longer and/or aren't canceled by dying. That would make managing friend and foe status more worthwhile. Especially glad for 0 jp with Lancer lol. Liking it so far but Monks scare me

EDIT: Oh also the changes to Undead monsters. I personally like the reverse healing and constant reraise and there's hacks to limit the phoenix down abuse on them. But you do you, it still works as you have it.

EDIT: Just finished ch.1 I have to say somehow Charge seems better than vanilla, which would be good in my book. That Algus fight took me awhile to work through, nice work. Mostly those mages and the enemies' next-tier equipment. 5 seems a good limit to Jump's range. Really enjoying it man.
