The Lounge / Naming Conventions
June 27, 2010, 04:17:28 pm
Recently, i have been looking at the new project sections. Most of the time, i am seeing recycled names, with slightly different effects. Granted their are near limitless words for skills in the English Dictionary, but sometimes, the words chosen feel all to common, and don't necessarily impose any kind of significance onto a skill.

For SoR(yea, its not dead, the forum is just inactive until i am able to devote more than an hour or 2 a day), I was looking into changing the names of many of the skills. Some keywords seem to universal, and every other patch seems to have one or two of them.

So, for a big patch, How do you guys feel about Latin? Not all abilities or classes will involve Latin, mind you, But it would defiantly add some nice flare, and unique feel.

Some Examples:
The base class, Squire, would be:
Tardus Proeliator - Latent Warrior
Magnum Opus - Greatest Work, usually in Alchemy
Medulla Veneficium - Medulla means Marrow(as in bone marrow), and Veneficium means "Poisoning by Magic"
Vitio Iuxtim - Vitio means "Damage" and Iuxtim means "Equally"
Magnanimitas - Greatness of Soul

I have no knowledge of Latin, so prefixs and suffixs were ommited, and i used a translater and dictionary for some and peiced them together(unfortunatly, prefix's, suffixs, and helpers(like, and, to, for, of) would make a skill's name longer, and glitch the screen, or run off the menu)

Thoughts?

Changed my Vote From LD, to Skip sandwhich. Him and several othrs have helped me back when SoR was going through quite the large amount of turbulence.

Vanya, Lasting Dawn, Bastardpoetry

Vanya has been a good friend
Lasting dawn had been an well of information effortlessly overflowing iwth knowledge and tranquility. His viewpoints are often unbiased
Bastard has always been a huge influence on what i post on FFH, in terms of content, and advice. Neatly polished(to some extent), intelligible, and thoroughly thought through. He also is a fan of the muppets

Who voted for me?

Quote from: "philsov"why is it always the asm'ers....
Because ASM hacking is very hard on the brain, so is programming (to a lesser extent).
The only way I ever got mentally exhausted was through ASM hacking... my brain fried.

He has the right of it. ASM literally had my brain leaking fluids out of my ears. I need to take a much 'hated' break from ASM, or im not gonna be in any condition to get my programming degree. I am, however, still lurking once or twice a week~

About time!!

Hacking on pSX seemed so slow, because it had no way to change the FPS(as far as i know, changing it affected nothing)

Former,

If your having trouble understand all the Hex (and you make it sound like your editing numbers at pretty much random, rather than specific instructions), i can walk you through Renegade64. Which basically compiles hex into ASM, and viceversa for implementation into an ISO. and i can walk you through one of the more advanced tricks; Labels...so you can byapss the standard jump distance limit, (0xFFFF is very limiting, especially since most of code is at least 67000 away) itl help with repointing hacks or writing larger hacks. Razele had to walk me through it, as its a bit hard to understand on your own; the syntax is weird.

Nice work, FDC.

I cant find my notes, but i should be able to make time this weekend, and maybe we could collaborate on some of these things...

Why are you overwriting some of Razel's seemingly unrelated hacks? has Zodiac not allotted you space in battle.bin yet?

This is my hobby:

Lookin' muthafuckin' DAPPER!

This is my hobby :D...so does that count for something?

Im a month or so late to the party, but i wanted ot throw my two cents in. after doing that 3 megabyte text file on why FF7 sucks(while point out good points about it being a sucky game, i did over exaggerate some of the features to troll some fanboys), i looked back on all my arguements, and realized there is a SHIT TON FF7 did wrong, but there is alot it did right.

I enrolled for a game programming degree at De'vry, i start next month. And analyzing things like this thoroughly, is a hobby of mine. Hopefully im gonna put this hobby to use~

Quote from: "Voldemort"
Quote from: "Kaijyuu"I blame it on being an early game for the ps1, but largely I found FF7's environments to be murky unnavigable messes.

Horrible looking game. At least in the NES games I could see what things were.
the in-battle environments suck

outside of battle not so much

No one should be judging a game based on its engine anymore(i did not quote what you said about the engine, but its in the topic). But i do have some qualms with the engine, as well as the settings. Alot of the areas(the two ones im thinking of are the cables that you climb on your way to Shinra, and the caves behind nibbleheim) Have serious pathing and timing issues. The cables have that dreaded jump onto a swinging cable to the other pathway. I did it recently, and it took me 14 minutes. And the caves have a dark enough layout, it makes it hard to see walkways, passages, and ways to get to wooden planks to get a treasure chest(i think thats in the cave im talking about)

Quote from: "Bastard Poetry"In writing, there are a number of storytelling devices that are considered serious no-nos.

Ending a story with.. "And I woke up to realize it was just a dream."

Another very bad cliche is to throw the hero into a memory wipe so that THEN he starts to bring his personality into fruition. He no longer has his whiny habits, he basically can start himself from scratch(like victims of a stroke lose their memory, but there are cases where turrets has vanished, or twitches and other habits cease completly)

Im sorry, FF7 has great story elements(although very hard to follow, since most of the time it doesnt give adeqaute information), but Cloud, along with some of the ones you mentioned, has no personality growth. Cait Sith, with his traitorism, Barret, with his town casting him out and whatnot, hell even yuffie with that damned tower in the back of wutai. They all have growth, that you notice. Granted, yuffie doesnt grow much, because she wasnt given as much to grow with as the others...but Cloud has no excuse. Throughout the entire game, up until the memory wipe, he fluxuates. First he is silent and badass and doesnt care about anyone, then wants to be a great leader, then doesnt care about anyone. then cares greatly for his friends. Then Aeris dies, and he gets all angry.... the pattern continues... even hours later, when he tries to push the party away in the airship, cause he doesnt want them to get hurt fighting sephiroth, even though about an hour of gameplay earlier, he said he needed them to defeat sephiroth.

You can argue that he has gone through alot, or maybe he had a mental breakdown... but the phrase "what doesnt kill you, makes you stronger" comes to mind... And being Bi-Polar is not an excuse for great character development.

I will agree, that most of Voldemorts points stand strong, as opposed to ff10, but the main character doesnt grow much....

Thats not to say tidus doesnt poor growth, i havent played it in a very long time, and will make no comment on that.

Also, im sorry for the typos, my right mouse button isnt working in firefox(it stops bringing up the menus when i right click in a text box), so i cant use spellcheck

Quote from: "PX_Timefordeath"Damn SB, you are invincible. Good to see you're (mostly) well, but that mess of a car looks terrible. Now how about that tattoo on your back....

There is a topic about that wandering around somewhere.

Quote from: "darthpaul"
Quote from: "VampragonLord"If some new kid had made a topic almost exactly like this one, you guys wouldnt be all "up in arms" about it, and you know it.

I'm glad this topic was here. Sentinal is like a brother to me and I was starting to worry about him not being around. Looks like I was right to.

Glad to see back on your feet, or e-feet anyway.

thanks DP, thats the reason i made this topic, letting everyone who was worried know.

Quote from: "philsov"WELCOME back TO FFH, WHERE ALL YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE!

Glad to see you're still coherant brother SB, can't wait for ya to come back full time.

As for the completely totaled car... they tear it up trying to get you or is that just that way from the accident? O.o

Lol, well they finally took me off the valium. Now im not as "out there". They ripped the left section of the hood off, it was lose enough, and they cut the other one. Thats all they had done to it.

Quote from: "Zodiac"Physical immortality and biological immortality are two different things; you could've seriously died there! Look at the fucking car. Sure they cut it a bit to get you out, but it's like you had a MP Switch car shield that took over 9000 damage.
..Maybe the airbag helped a bit too.

Air bag didnt deploy.

Quote from: "Zypher"We never had much interaction but from what I gathered from browsing the forums  and older topics you seem to be quite stubborn in making this site a better place SB

glad that stubbornness makes you a survivor as well

hope you and whoever else was involved make a good and full recovery

Thanks for the kind words =) When magitek started coming around, it attracted alot more people that would rather turn this into a place to get what they want and run around spamming rude/insultive things, rather than people who would use a HACKING SITE as a hub of information or resources. Scared me, that this place might turn into other small hacking sites, and have people running around trolling constantly, rather than people who offer the help and/or company a community should give :P

Quote from: "VampragonLord"point still remains, spoiler tag is one click, you were well enough to reply to my post, and ignored the "dont stretch page".

As much as it stinks you were in a crash,  youre still well enough to wander onto the internet and gripe about it.

In the time it took you to post the pictures here and go "not well enough to shrink", you could have just as easliy uploaded them anywhere else, and spoiler tagged them.

And guys, you misunderstand, sure i feel bad hes hurt and was in a wreck, i get it, but hes either too hurt to post, and shouldnt be posting at all at the moment and should wait til he is better before he explains it, or hes NOT too injured to post, in which case he could have made the additional 3 seconds of effort.

GRIPE?!? WTF! ive been on drugs for the past month, how the hell am i supposed to get up and around like that? Hell, i already fell down two flights of stairs :/ I did not come here to gripe, and your very wrong for assuming such.
No offense Vamp, but this IS NOT GAMEFAQS. This is an actual community. I dont know you, or what types of sites you come from; but alot of people here actually are concerned.

I made this topic because, in the past 2 years or so, i have dissapeared many times. surgeries, possible cancer, possible seizures, stolen laptop. Things pop up; people get skeptic(its why i no longer am an active mod of my own forum). I did not want sympathy, i did not want attention. I simply wanted to let everyone know i was okay.

Sorry you feel the need to respond that way, but your response should have stopped before the administrator had to warn you.

Also, the pictures are attachments, and not links. so i never uploaded them and had them resized or anything. They are the way they are because i no longer have the pictures, and my right mouse button is broken(which means no right clicking and saving). If someone wants to do that for me, go ahead, but if no one does im just gonna take the pictures down....three seconds worth of effort...bah :/

Reason we care about this topic.

Ive been here two years, back when the site was (wwww.auritech.com), so i have been around long enough to see you post around, and i have had the respect to read all of your post/topics before replying, even when they were in the new projects forum. you have no reason to harbor ill will towards me, and this isnt spam, so either read the full topic before posting a reply, or dont post.

At least, thats how zodiac deemed it was to be(SPAM POSTS IN THE SPAM)  after everyone was raising post counts with one or two word posts like "lol" or "looks good" when he removed the introduction forums....

sorry, for some reason i felt the need to bring up my seniority here, since so many new people have joined since i have left.

yea, i just cant keep away from hospitals it seems :P been in the hospital at least 30 times, with tons of diseases and injuries....and by all means i should be dead from that car wreck...but i come out with a gash in the head, and a broken rib(other then my neck, obviously)....im a walkin fucking medical marvel =D

it figures how this happens THE DAY before me and my fiancee were supposed to go on a cruise with my family to the bahamas. the crash happened on the 7th

And sorry i didnt bother to shrink the pictures....but its making me sick to stay on the net any longer

Unfortunately, that was lost last time my hard drive crashed(along with the old SoR, which is why i had to restart it the first time). If i end up finding time to work on it soon, i will, but as it is, its been almost 5 days since i got to even log onto this site D:

Mam, i wish i would have made a thread like this over a year ago when i started work on ASMing it.

The problem, is that the action menu has HARDCODED, and VERY specific checks. The action menu is loaded, and checked against itself in at least three other spots (so if you have elemental, and change the action menu in fftpatcher to normal, its still elemental, and it WILL still find it, thats where it conflicts with itself, and jumps to the wrong branches(which is why all attacks have a weapon range, 00% chance to do nothing) If you let it load you skillset first, then change the action menu, after it is loaded, it seems to work genuine. But it checks it consistently, and my asm knowledge for looping is limited. So, granted that, my asm will work in game the first time you select the menu, but if you exit it, or get another turn, your screwed.

The japanese found a workaround, but their code, addresses, and routine jumps are generally more confusing than you guys are going to be after reading this post.

One fix i tried, was having all abilities as normal....(using Agrias as a samurai as an example, here) When agrias got a turn, it would load her samurai skillset into her squire placeset(i.e. Holy Knight). This worked marvels, with no crashing. but did not work for secondaries. And only on special units.

I started working on this in january of 09. IF you guys find a fix not involving ASM, im gonna be surprised, but will apreaciate the lightened workload.

BTW:: I make it sound like i can fix it, if i can work with loops, but thats a very big stretch; i already forsee 2 other problems with constant looping. Slowdown, and conflicting code with the secondary skillset.

Let me know if you guys have any spitballs i can try to fit into the straw that is my ASM Knowledge.

EDIT:: if you want me to explain EXACTLY why its greying out and doing this, i can, but i didnt want to make this a wall of text and people not read most of it.

Quote from: "Zypher"(assuming the U.S. line continues downward and Mexico's line continues upward)

I dont believe the graph is some sort of flow chart, but just lines(in varying sizes) linking to numbers on the sides of the graph. No necassarily in any particular direction, just to the numbers as it is now.

I haven't had time to read the bill, but the liens im hearing about keeping me on my parents insurance until my later 20s would help me BIG time. The health insurance company tried to drop me THE moment i turned 18(i got a call from them that day) and i was in the ER(great way to spend the b-day i know), i had to fight with them and have them call the doctor to help prove i was really that sick.

now i turned 19(woot, 22cnd, anniversarry of the hospital visit was today =P) and i got another call from them again, requesting a conference with one of their agents. its silly retarded how much fighting i have to do, just to try and get money to be healthy.

My sister is 14, her first final fantasy was 10.

I made her go back and play FF3(or six, however you would refer to it as), and then she played seven, and then nine.(our discs for eight broke). We got 13, and she wont touch it. She said if she wanted to pay for a horrible movie, she would have bought a movie. There maybe some decent/slightly enjoyable gameplay elements, but im 12 hours into the game, and have gotten to experience very little of it.

She is sticking to crisis core.

She is 14, and knows the difference between a good game and a bad game. if she played them when she was 7, maybe she would feel different (which, oddly enough, was when i played my first FF, FF7, and i cant stand it.) but it doesn't deter form the fact that she regrets not waiting for god of war 3. She bought it, yet im the only one who has played it, lol.
59
if anyone has played 13, and 7, they probably noticed a HUGE amount of things based off of it..im only in chapter 5...but within 2 chapters i noticed

You start off with a silent-soldier with a bad attitude
Your partner is a black guy
your partner is a black guy with guns
The first battle is practically the same as the first boss in 7(the scorpion thing. only it looks cooler and shoots the laser out of its mouth, not the tail)
When Hope's mom dies, and snow grabs her hand, its like when tifa grabs clouds hand, but cloud falls onto Aeris's flower bed, and snow falls down, as well as Hope's Mom
After that last one, the boss you fight IMMEDIATLY after, with Lightning and Sazh, is the boss you fight in final fantasy 7 that explodes and CAUSES the above similarity to take place.

anyone else care to put in some similarities/bases or anything?
