So, I didn't make this sprite. It was made by Rathaelos. I simply changed the color of the feather and the scarf from yellow to white. I did however change the portrait completely, although I didn't actually create that either. I frankensprited it from Lijj's Red Mage portrait and Vanya's Alternative Aliste portrait.
I did however create a custom EVTCHR for this guy. During the first scene at Orbonne Monastery, Rad enters and kneels. If you've replaced his sprite with anything else, it bugs out for two really awkward frames. This frame replaces the Squire sprite with a kneeling Red Mage and prevents any graphical glitches.
I really like this and I'm interested if anybody else thinks this is as cool I do. What else could I do to make the portrait look better? Does his hair look okay? I couldn't really steal much of that.
I like it Jack of All Trades.. just the part where his head meets the cap looks a little too indented.
Whilst fixing his hat-hair. I realized that I forgot to change the palette back to its original colors. I also included the proper portrait and formation sprite too
You may want to forward this to Dome's attention. He is remaking FFT+ from the ground up with new ASMs and such. Rad is a Red Mage in this game, but he resembles a Squire without a hood. Not terribly flashy. This sprite looks awesome and, thanks to your EVTCHR setup, there won't be any glitches. It's almost heroic what you did.
Dome all ready knows about this. I posted a version with Cheetah's old Red Mage portrait in his Generic Sprites discussion. I don't think he's interested. He didn't respond to the idea at all.
Since I didn't really create this so much as stitch it up and hit the juice, (ala Frankenspriting) should I submit this to the site?
(Must have missed the message. I love the sprite and I'll surely implement it)
Well, I guess I have to thank Rathaelos for his awesome work, Jack for his awesome edit and Neophyte for his endless support for FFT Plus :-)

Nice! Now you have to event edit every {Ramza} to Ramza and change Ramza and Rad's names, then you could have a renamed Rad patch with a Red Mage
Yeah, it's right there on my list of to do's right after replacing all of the random knight events with pokemon. ;)
I like your Red Mage sprite, works good as a Male Shooter with another palette:P
So my EVTCHR file doesn't work right. The palette is mixed up. I'm trying to figure out how to change it around so he comes out correctly but I'm not having any luck.
I feel like a total POS for this; because I didn't notice it earlier(but now the thread has been resurrected). The sprite's hat has a white stripe on it while the portrait does not.
There. Edit the palette first, then paste the frames in the position you want.
Is there a guide somewhere that explains what to do? I don't understand what you mean. I've tried this a couple different ways.
I edited the palette from the image you've given me. Using Graphics Gale I imported the standard palette into the image you've given me and that didn't work. Then I tried importing the palette in the image you've given me and that didn't work either.
I took some screen shots.
What am I doing wrong?
Edit: Hold on I think I've got it.
I'm out of ideas now. I used on of these screen shots to figure out which palette box goes with which color and I still can't get it to work. I'm at a loss.
Ahh I edited it correctly already, what I meant was, to make a new one, do those steps.
Okay well basically you must be over writing the wrong palette. On the evtchr editor, you can change the palette number so change it to the squire colours (i think its 5 or 6) then import over that one. The one I posted you don't need to edit, try it and see what happens. And no I don't there is a tutorial.
I've tried it in both 5 and 6 and it gives you the screen I posted above :(
This one will definitely work because i have proof :P

And also looks awesome
Thanks Twinees. This is great.
I must repeat; or so I think: The hat in the portrait is still not matching the sprite too well.. it's missing the white stripe. Glad you got it working in-game though.
I must mention that I'm at best a novice. It's going to take me some time before I can get it fixed. I'll get around to it at some point.
Lijj is right, the hat in the portrait needs to be fixed. Its nearly perfect, I think though that the raised part of the hat is following the pointy nose part, i think it shouldn't, it should go straight down, and the white thing should wrap around that part like a scarf. I wonder if this makes any sense...
not a bit...
I would show you what I mean but I'm simply terrible at portraits. What I mean is that the hat should look in the portrait more like the hat in the sprite, so it should have a white scarf thing wrapped around the raised middle part and that should be more round...
That much I understand. Eventually, I'll get to the band but I'll probably not be able to make the hat more round.
So I finally got around to editing my Red Mage Portrait. I made his face a little thicker, I got rid of his convoluted looking bangs, and I added a band to his hat. I'm currently struggling to get his hair right. Any criticism and advice would be much appreciated.
I like the changes. Making his face thicker and removing the bangs were a good choice. The red shading on the back on the feather and on the clothes is kinda flat. Also, the neck area should be darker than the chin area.
I took some spare time to edit it. Compare what changes I made from yours and maybe learn from it. This one has 15 colors, so you might want to add 1 more for the white shades. ;)
Here's example of what I did. Haven't got the time to touch up the scarf though.

I like the hair, and you did a better job on the hat, Jimmy. Falling in love with the angry expression, are we? It looks great on him though.
I love the angry expression on him, for what little it's worth. We need more angry sprites. :P
I personally went for the softer expression for Rad because his canon look is the Squire baby face. However, if enough people want to send Rad to the Angry Dome, I'm happy to comply. I've got to say that both of you guys did a fantastic job. I spent all morning picking through your faces pixel by pixel decided which of your features I liked the best.
I took Jimmy's hat entirely. There is no way, I'm going to be anywhere near that level. I used Jimmy's hair, but I didn't duplicate it. I free handed something similar. I free handed Mike's shading changes but they are a pixel by pixel duplication (mostly for learning experience.
I'm really glad his hat matches his battle sprite. My new concern are his clothes. His shoulders in the sprite are white. I simply don't have enough colors to work with to differentiate them from the scarf though. I feel like Red is a good compromise. You could say that he has his cape pulled over them or something.
Opinions?
Thanks guys. Here's what I did for the rest, made him less angry. 12 colours if I'm not mistaken.

Looks great Jimmy. I like your improvements a lot.
This looks spectacular Jimmy. Thank you. I updated the original post with the new portrait and battle sprite sheet. This all looks really good now. Do you think we should submit this to the site?
I say yes.
There was no need to add this at all Neophyte, if it was going to be done it already would be.
I can and will absolutely add it to the site so long as the site will accept it. I'll put it up before the week's end.
I submitted him today. We'll see if he gets accepted.
Most likely it will.
You guys did a great job to him, and he certainly looks the best Red Mage around for me. ;)
Y'know, the portrait is facing the wrong way.
Do you mean it's upside down?
Yeah, if your looking at an FFT sprite sheet, the portrait would be facing up. Just look at a vanilla sheet to see what I mean.
I fixed the portrait for those wanting to use this
