Title: Parted Ways Sprites
Post by: Eternal on August 02, 2011, 12:50:41 pm
As per Kage's request I'm begrudgingly making this topic... begrudgingly namely because so many of you guys are busy with other projects. About half of the generic jobs in PW still need new sprites and as much as I dislike bothering you guys, with so many new spriters, I figure it couldn't hurt to ask. Below is a list of each job I need a sprite for and some general background on what they're like in battle and what their themes are.

Male Sniper:
The Sniper uses Bows, Crossbows, and Guns. Their attacks hit with perfect accuracy, and their skills rely on laying Snares- continual attacks that damage enemies and debuff them while possibly Immobilising them, causing them to become trapped in those Snares. Replaces Archers.

CONCEPT: http://images.wikia.com/finalfantasy/images/3/32/Ff14-class-archer.jpg

(Minus the hat... hood... thingy.)

Female Berserker:
The Berserker uses Berserk magic to throw enemies into a fury, as well as Berserking themselves to increase their raw power. They also cripple enemies in hand-to-hand combat by breaking their limbs and throwing sand in their foes' eyes to Blind them. Using their bare fists, Beserkers ravage enemy forces. Replaces Monks.

CONCEPT: http://www.spriters-resource.com/snes/chronotrigger/sheet/2511

(Minus the tail, poofy hair, and different color scheme for the fur.)

Male Elementalist:
The Elementalist uses nature to both harm enemies and aid allies, ranging from effects such as damage, to debuffs, to buffing, to healing- all varying on what terrain the Elementalist is on. Replaces Geomancer.

CONCEPT: http://images.wikia.com/finalfantasy/images/e/e7/Ffta-moogle-animist.jpg

(Non-moogle, of course.)

Female Elementalist
See Male Elementalist.

CONCEPT: http://images.wikia.com/finalfantasy/images/2/21/Ff13-fang.png

Male Performer:
Troubadours whose songs and dances leave enemies enthralled and can aid allies. Like vanilla's Bard and Dancer rolled into one package, with new Songs/Dances. They use Instruments and Carpets as weapons. Replaces Ninja.

CONCEPT: http://images.wikia.com/finalfantasy/images/6/63/Arc-Bard.png

Male Psion:
Pyrokinetic, emotionless mages whose magicks manipulate and befuddle enemy forces. Their ability to disrupt enemy thoughts also lend well to crippling enemy mages. Replaces Time Mages.

CONCEPT: http://images.wikia.com/finalfantasy/images/1/19/BangaaTrickster.jpg

(Without visor. Human, obviously.)

Female Psion:
See Male Psion.

CONCEPT: http://images.wikia.com/finalfantasy/images/a/a8/Psychic_Paine.jpg

(Again, minus the visor.)

Male Sage:
Arbiters of time and space, and keepers of the ultimate magicks, Sages use Gravity, Flare, Meteor, and Ultima as well as other map-wide skills to change the flow of battle. Though their bodies are frail, their magicks can easily destroy enemies. Replaces Calculators.

CONCEPT: http://images.wikia.com/finalfantasy/images/5/5e/Dissidia_Onion_Sage.png

Female Sage:
See Male Sage.

CONCEPT: http://images.wikia.com/finalfantasy/images/5/5e/TAYPSP-LeonoraSprite.png

(Maybe less baggy sleeves?)

Male Avatar:
Shamans whose contracts with those beyond the veil allow them to summon Espers from Magicite. As the player progresses with the story, they acquire shards of Magicite which allow Avatars to summon monsters to damage enemies and aid allies. Replaces Samurai.

CONCEPT: http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110115132338/finalfantasy/images/thumb/7/73/FF3-Evoker.png/250px-FF3-Evoker.png

Female Avatar:
See Male Avatar.

CONCEPT: http://images.wikia.com/finalfantasy/images/8/89/Ffta-viera-elementalist.jpg

(If I were to ever write lore for these guys, it'd be that males summon spirits from Magicite by chanting incantations, whereas females would summon them by performing wild, magical dances.)

Female Scholar:
Intelligent mages who specialise in the school of Aero and Bio magicks, as well as are able to remove buffs and debuffs. Replaces Mediators.

CONCEPT: http://images.wikia.com/finalfantasy/images/6/65/Hal.jpg
CONCEPT 2: http://images.wikia.com/finalfantasy/images/d/df/TAYPSP-HarleySprite.png

Male Mime:
Same as Vanilla's mime.

Male Freelancer and Female Sentinel taken by me. I will do some concepts at a later date.

I want Male psion and female berseker, because I'm stuck with nakoruru's sprite and I need something else to do.

Feel free, guys. Have fun! :P

EDIT: Posted concepts.

EDITRA: Feel free to break away from said concepts if you'd like. This is just kind of how I see them, and, well, I have no taste in sprites. So do what you guys think would look best. :P

I'm no spriter but i realy like the concepts, if the spriters can make somethings like that Parted Ways will be prettier than expected, i loved the sga concept. Anyways, hopes for good sprites, i know you all can.

For the Sages you should try using these as bases:

http://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?topic=1072.1080

Just get rid of his goattee and he will make a great generic. Give him a funny hat if you wish. The arms might be an issue since the attack animations are incomplete, but they might not be that hard.

Just do a palette change and maybe a different headswap and she would be pretty perfect and would go with the other guy very well.

I even began cleaning up that Sage guy some time ago. He surely would make a great Sage. For the missing part of the sheet Simon/Zalmo could work, just making it a little different. I was a fan of White Noble in the contest(I even voted for it as a third place), so I fully support the idea of making it a female. Perhaps Diil could do it?

Concept for Female Guardian:

Main goal was to keep it close to Knight and give some Guardian stuff(the helmet), also to differ her a little more from male, I gave her cute eyes, as opposed to male's angry ones.
Title: Re: Parted Ways Sprites
Post by: GeneralStrife on August 04, 2011, 03:20:28 pm
That's winning, kage.
I can't see anything I don't like about it at the moment.

Well that worked because without reading your post I saw the pic and the first thing that stunned me was the feminine face; I hadn't even looked at the dress.

Small update. Reworked the helmet's shading, thanks to Twinees for pointing it out. I will have to do something about back frames, since the hair doesn't blend in too well as you can see. Probably Female Onion Knight will help here.

It would be nice to see here in a different color than blue, maybe a purple? The hair doesn't need to be gray right?

Title: Re: Parted Ways Sprites
Post by: Kagebunji on August 05, 2011, 06:02:32 pm
Blue is the default first palette, so I am not eager to change it, all I could do is some different shades of blue. There are no more colors, so I cannot do anything else than "metal hair". It was decided earlier on chat that I will hide the hair.

I'm planning to do a small edit in her clothes because it still look like the Lijj's female viking. Any suggestion for clothes??
Title: Re: Parted Ways Sprites
Post by: Cheetah on August 08, 2011, 12:10:32 am
She is looking a little SD. Hair is too bit and body is too skinny. Her feet look a bit big too. Sorry Wolfran, I'm not a fan of this berserker.
Title: Re: Parted Ways Sprites
Post by: GeneralStrife on August 08, 2011, 12:20:52 am
Teh feet. I got a foot fetish and I can safely say those are monsters.
Title: Re: Parted Ways Sprites
Post by: Lijj on August 08, 2011, 12:29:41 am
I think I got those clodhoppers from the thief;
don't make fun
jk -
I do like the female Viking with the dress far more but this seems good for a berserker concept
I like the concept and hair Wolfran I can't think of anything though for the clothing. For the hair, maybe it could come in a tad in the back.. but as it is it doesnt bother me.

For the guardian
I think the idea of a plume from the oyo knight could femenize the helmet more..
Good work fellows

Title: Re: Parted Ways Sprites

If anyone feels like doing it, I request a portrait for Female Gurdian (Mav, perhaps you could?), that way I could concentrate on sprite and palettes.
Title: Re: Parted Ways Sprites
Post by: Cheetah on August 08, 2011, 03:05:05 pm
Is there really nothing that can be done about the metal/silver hair? It is driving me nuts.
Title: Re: Parted Ways Sprites
Post by: Kagebunji on August 08, 2011, 05:02:44 pm
It is already hidden inside the helmet, Cheetah. I have most of the sprite done, I just don't update it here, I will do it once it is done. All I need is a portrait. Mav, I would be glad if you take a shot at Female too, pretty please bro. :D

Good deal the hair got to me too; hope she gets a cute feather as well.
Title: Re: Parted Ways Sprites
Post by: Kagebunji on August 09, 2011, 03:50:25 am
A feather on helmet? It might be little weird, since feathers should go with hats, and plumes should go with helms. IIRC, Jimmy had a plume on one of his past designs for Knight when Mercenaries were alive, but I wasn't much fan of the plume. For now I will do the current design.
Title: Re: Parted Ways Sprites
Post by: Wolfran on August 09, 2011, 01:16:47 pm
Now should be a nice berseker with that fox head, and smaller feet.
@Kage: Feathers in a helmet is more common than you think, Imo it looks better than plumes.

The angle of the helmet looks different when compared to the head itself, that's the feeling I have. Could you post a smaller size too? I would like to help you a little with the skin colors etc.

The new avatar I have will be a new character in PW named Quinn. Portrait made by Twinees, great job on this pal.

Tomorrow is here :P and you are right, I will fix the lack of highlights when i work on it next.

After seeing your concept Wolfran, I was inspired to do something of my own but I tried stick to your overall design. The male, on the left, is 14 colours atm (including the background colour) and the female , on the right, is 16 colours (including the background colour). I'm also thinking about changing the colour of the female's wristbands, and I'm not very happy with her skirt, any ideas? I hope everyone likes them.
Once I come up with a good design for the male elementalist, I'll decide which set I should work on first.

The male looks great =D i would love to have one of those in my party.
The female looks good too, the helm looks great but it seems a little out of place, maybe is the colour or maybe she needs a little more furr in her outfit.
Title: Re: Parted Ways Sprites
Post by: mav on August 11, 2011, 01:09:57 am
The male looks damn near perfect. I'm not a fan of the clothing style on the female, but it's still pretty nice. For the skirt, I would replace it something akin to a loin cloth. Like Ayla, from Chrono Trigger. Your call though, cause she might end up looking trampy.
Title: Re: Parted Ways Sprites
Post by: Cheetah on August 11, 2011, 01:21:55 am
Twinees you are killing me, these are just so amazing. Are you officially pursuing a career as a spriter/artist?

Male Berserker: is INSANE. Perfect design, except the monk arm bands need to be blended in just a bit better, because I can still tell they are there. Just a couple pixel changes but that will make the arms pretty tough, but not for you. It would be amazing if the female had a different animal head, but I'm not sure what to use.

Female Elementalist: This is just an amazing sprite. I have no recommendations.

Female Berserker: Yeah it is the right idea but it needs some refinements. So for the skirt I think you should do a long, but divided skirt. Like something a Viera would wear, like this:

I would also recommend the animal furs be brown instead of tan, so that it doesn't blind with the sin tone as much. Maybe her skirt could also be the fur color and just her top could be brown.
Title: Re: Parted Ways Sprites
Post by: GeneralStrife on August 11, 2011, 01:22:43 am
I would stab someone for a Viera sprite, I thought about trying it myself. I remember a pretty bad jap Fran sprite floating around somewhere, still, its better than starting with a blank sheet.

Thankyou everyone for the crits and comments, it has really helped with fixing the female berserkers design. I decided to go with a cheetah look for the hat, rounded ears and slightly different eye sockets. Added more fur, and added Cheetah's suggested for the skirt (ive yet to change the colour but i most likely will) and im down to 13 or 14 colours.

I actually based the male berserker's arm entirely on the bare chested man and i didnt use the male monk as a reference at all :P.

Female berserk looks great now except for some palette changes as you said. Obviously I love the cheetah head as well, the rounded ears make a big difference. You could maybe change the nose so it is a bit shorter to add even more variety.

Omsa, It's beautiful, Twinn.
I think a tail is not a great idea because the animation in the walking frames could be a really pain in the ass.
And the left ear in the wolf helmet looks like it has a straight cut and the right ear in the female berseker maybe looks better a few pixels to the left and...

I finished the male Berserker a few days ago, and have begun working on the female since (once I'm happy with the female's tail it should go a lot faster).
I hope to get the female done before Eternal updates his patch next so he can release the sprites at the same time.
You will just have to wait a bit and play PW to see what it looks like ;)

Shouldn't this thread be called something in a sub-forum that's titled "Parted Ways Spriting Forum" like Mercenaries had?

It'd help promote PW by giving the patch more depth as opposed to being indulged within the monstrously large Spriting Forum imo (not that there's anything wrong with this section >_>).

But the problem is that the spriting section isnt getting much activity recently (most probably due to the end of summer holidays) so I'm pretty sure a Parted Ways Spriting sub-forum (although it may inspire people to do make some sprite for it) wont receive much activity.

Cheetah, I'm all for making a FFVII patch :P. I'm interested in making events and maps anyway but like you said, we need to think of a decent idea/approach for it. Maybe we can get some in the patches section.

That is something I would actually put my time into, FFVII being my heart and soul of gaming.

That portrait is once again insanely awesome. I feel like you might have overdid the aging and roughness just a bit though and I'm not sure what all the white pixels to the right of his goggles are about.

Yeah maybe we should all butt heads together and see what we can come up with for an FFVII patch.

I'm not a big fan of FF7 but I think you'll need a bunch of new sprites and fix others to do a good patch.

Thanks to Twinees, Female Guardian has a portrait now. All that is left are palettes. She should be done today.

Um, there has been a sort of lack of updates. Sorry for that. Lately I have been working on Male Cadet, as some may know, but I am still undecided about the legs. Front frames don't look too bad, but back frames are damn bad IMO(I used Delita's pants for this, too bad his pants are baggy...). Could anyone give some suggestions for his legs? I thought of using Knight or DelitaCH2(with leather colors, not metal ofcourse). Any ideas are welcome.

For a frankensprite it is working. I would change colors to those of Male Scholars though, and probably add a scarf(either from Wiggy, Mediator, or Scholar himself) to make it more Scholar like.
