Title: Official Sprite Contest: Heroes From Other Worlds
Post by: Celdia on September 22, 2012, 11:53:54 am
Heroes From Other Worlds

It's time for the Annual FFH Halloween Spriting Contest! I'm starting this a bit earlier than it was last year in hopes of getting more entries this time around. Last year our theme was "Decade of the Zombie" and we certainly got some creative entries. This year I thought we might keep the theme a little closer to the holiday itself and make it a broader scope as well. So the theme this time will be "Heroes From Other Worlds" where the goal is to make a character sprite of a hero or heroine from another game world or one of your favorite Ivalician dressed up like someone from another game! We already have some great custom sprites out there of characters from outside of Ivalice - the roster of which is going to expand with the work being done on Journey of the Five - but maybe there's some game franchise you think is terribly under-represented? Or maybe you'd like to show how your favorite FFT characters would look like dressed up for Halloween? Now is the time to step up and get your favorite heroes thrown into the mix!

As always, this is a beginner's level spriting competition. If you've never done a sprite before we'd still love to see what you can do! The competition is open to EVERYONE and you may make as many or as few submissions as you like. You may also continue to update your submissions to the very end of the due date. Feel free to give feedback on entries as they get posted to help people make the best sprite they can. Also, if someone else is doing a character you yourself would like to do, don't hesitate to post your own version!

Submissions are due by 11:59pm EST on Friday the 26th of October. Once the submissions are closed, all entries will be organized and a public voting poll will be opened for every community member to cast a vote. The poll will be closed on Halloween, the 31st of October so the winner can be announced that evening. The poll will be blinded and all users are allowed one vote, so please respect the voting process.

Since I'm proposing the contest theme this year I'll put myself out there for providing actual prizes for the top three winners. As always, you can expect at minimum some kind of permanent recognition for your accomplishments. However, flaunting the trend of previous competitions, I will personally make perler bead prizes for the winners. I haven't decided exactly what but that may depend on the entries themselves. If I can, I'll try to actually make the winning entries into perler bead figures. For those unfamiliar with perler beads, go have a look over here (http://ffhacktics.com/smf/index.php?topic=8434.0). (Acceptance of perler rewards will require providing an address to ship the prize to. Keep that in mind when entering if you want to be eligible for a prize.)

Submission Requirements:
1) A minimum of 1 front diagonal frame.
2) A name for your entry. This can just be the actual character name you're making.
3) Provide a spoiler'd image or link to a piece of art of the character you're submitting.
4) Please use a sprite from FFT or a Custom Sprite (http://ffhacktics.com/sprites.php) as the base for your submission. You can also make a wholly original piece of course, but try to keep it in the style of FFT. Submissions using sprites obviously taken from other games as a base will not be considered valid entries. Also, please credit "SQUARE" for anything based on FFT sprites and make appropriate credits when using Custom Sprites from our collection.
5) 100% Zoom in either BMP or PNG format.
6) Post your submission in this thread and it will be officially entered.
7) Loosely follow the general FFT style such as dimensions and palette choice. However, submissions are NOT limited to 16 colors.
8) Submissions need to loosely follow the general competition topic.
9) Follow general forum rules, such as no nudity.
10) There is NO limit on the number of entries per member as long as they are significantly distinct.
11) If there are multiple valid versions of the same submission posted in the thread, the latest version will be considered the competition version.
12) Characters that a Custom Sprite already exists for will not be accepted as valid entries. Click here (http://ffhacktics.com/sprites.php) to see what custom sprites already exist.

Judging Criteria:
1) Personal Preference: Vote for your favorite character that gets submitted! The old 'Creativity' criteria doesn't really fit when the goal is to replicate something. :P
2) Artistic Ability: The more like the original character/costume, the better. However, make sure to balance this with the visual quality of the sprite. General pixel art ability, design, and palette choice are important here.
3) Valid Submission: There are clear expectations for submission, please try your best to follow them.

Important Dates:
Opening of Competition: 9/22
Submissions Due: 11:59pm EST 10/26
Voting Begins: 10/27
Winners Announced: 10/31 Halloween

A tiny thank you to Cheetah because I poached his post from last Halloween when making this one.

Hah, awesome. You can count on me to do some stuff. My favorite TV series starts on October, so I will get creative :P

Excellent, Kage. Looking forward to what you can come up with. :)

Alright, since I started this I may as well get it rolling. Work time on this one was about 45 minutes and I'm awful at this stuff. Imagine what all of you could do with a little time and effort! ^_^

Entry Name: Philia Felice and Clemente
Sources: SQUARE - Ovelia, Female Priest
Character Art: Image 1 (http://static.zerochan.net/Philia.Felice.full.850280.jpg), Image 2 (http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/0/112/391178-8257a46e5434673a4867e80d0bda8f42.jpg)

For those unfamiliar with the character, this is Philia Felice from Tales of Destiny, armed with her Swordian, Clemente. She was always one of my favorite character designs from the entire "Tales of..." series of games.

Looking forward to seeing those entries, people! And remember, there are REAL PRIZES on the line this time!

I never finished her, but since I've had quite a number of requests to see what I have, I'm using this as an opportunity to do so. I was planning to finish her specifically for this contest, but I was struck with inspiration for something completely different. So, without further ado...

Etna.

Still pains me to look at, but maybe I'll give her more attention some year.

And if you really need to see original character art:

And now to work on other things.

Alright lets get this submission underway.

And now for what I've been working on.

Morrigan Aensland.

If you have no idea who she is, shame on you. But here's a link (http://www.fightersgeneration.com/characters2/morrigan.html) for you, anyway.

Thinking about doing a sprite of her street clothes version tomorrow. Er, today, since it's now 6am. =_=

EDIT:
Re-submitted with updated portrait. New portrait is not totally freehanded like the old one. Used vanilla female Chemist as a reference to get the hair right. So add my shout to Square for that.

Nice. I was wondering just the other day if there would be another Halloween spriting compo this year. Glad to see this tradition going strong. Brings back some nice memories. :)

Hee, thanks. I may actually do so, just for the sake of practice. Which is to say, I will probably have to relent and convert all of my monster sprite characters to human in my little project.

I made a final revision to the Morrigan portrait, which I'll update once I'm finished with the street clothes portrait. I'm going a bit cross-eyed at Photoshop right now, though. =_=

Edit: Updated Morrigan's portrait in my last post. I 'finished' the street clothes portrait, but it's so crap that I'm not going to post it here.

Denim Powell/Denam Pavel.
The hero of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together. I used different elements from different sprites, including the old man at Alma's Funeral, Chp. 1 Ramza, the Male Archer, and Algus. This rendition is based off of his first sprite, which is a light blue/green colour as opposed to his later outfit which has more of an off-white base, as pictured below. (EDIT: The first picture was too small.  )

Hair need some work, his right arm need some shading fix, and is he armored? Because Archer's arm guard isn't really working if he isn't. Not sure what's going on with his legs.

Ah, I used to play Tales of Symphonia, and I love the Colette.  Given that it's just a contest, I doubt it'll be finished out, but I'd love to see it finished out fully.
Title: Re: Official Sprite Contest: Heroes From Other Worlds
Post by: theultrawolf on September 28, 2012, 03:58:16 am
Yeah, I intended for him to be armored, but I'll work on the right arm and legs so it blends more, I was more focused on just trying to replicate his LUCT sprite that it may not look all too well in the FFT format. Speaking of the legs, I always thought his outfit was a little like a jumpsuit, with the legs extending into the boots themselves, but that could just be me. :o

(EDIT: I worked a bit more to make it look truer to the sprite, maybe this one looks better. I know it's a nono to try to do custom for the most part, but I had to try, because the archer arms unfortunately are the only ones that are beefy enough to match his sprite from LUCT. I used Ramza Chp 2-3's sprite as a template for them though, I tried to make them look more similar to his.)

Don't be too harsh with the critiquing guys, the Halloween event was always supposed to be a fun thing to do, and if any designs lead onto a better sprite, that will be when critiques may be needed :P.

I hope this halloween event gets lots of people involved in the community activity, even if you don't think you are good at pixelling, we would all like to see a big turn out of entries anyway.

Also, Taichii, you are improving, well done.

K... so I kinda broke the rules. I used the original Rei (Breath of fire 3) sprite as a base for this... resized it... and kinda redrew each section in FFT-style. So if this doesn't count that's fine.. I wanted to submit it anyway for fun ^_^

Note: Big Rei is the original sprite in BoF3, Rei.bmp is my FFT-version.

He does, but that's his second form; like I said, as a Lord. in the later chapters when he saves Kachua/Catiua, and there he seems to be wearing an off white frock of some sort. But the first outfit he wears in the first couple chapters, looks more like a leather outfit with pauldrons and a traveling sash (around his person). And I always figured it was, due to Vice/Vyce wearing pauldrons, so I figured what he (Denim/Denam) was wearing were pauldrons, also, being big and poofy on that particular sprite, whereas the later Denim has shoulders that you can tell are cloth and not armored.

Gah, that Etna is horrible. I'll start her over from scratch someday.

Have Laharl, Flonne, and Pleinair, as well, in similar states of abandoned due to 'ARGH'. Mostly on the portrait side, but still.

You got it wrong man. The pic that is there is his first chapter, not Lord. Here is an image for you where you can see how he looks as a Soldier for the first three chapters, and his Lord version in Chapter 4(a rather big image):

Thanks Eternal! Let's just say the Kain sprite has a high probability of actually being finished, might add some purple to it too (since the original one has purples)...

On a side note I gotta play that TO game eventually still  I started it and I found it amusing how hard it was! According to that picture, and yeah I know this isn't the version of Denim/Denam you're going for, he has like loose flowing pants and boots, kinda like you see on Cloud, Lijj's male paladin has a strap across his chest, honestly it would be too skinny for this guy but you could make it thicker, and for the upper body MikeMitchi's male Gambler's jacket looks befitting with a color swap. Good luck with him!

Update, could use some crits/feedback. The teal colors are from like palette whatever from the male Black Mage, the purples are from the DK and the rest is like skin which is quite dark since Kain and Cecil and the others all look so tanned. FF IV makes so much sense, guys wearing full body armor with helmets have tans...anyways, whatcha guys think? On the first page is the original sprite if you want to compare it to that. I feel he can be more light teal, but might look horrible in game. Just in case you don't know just by looking at it, its a male dragoon head and helmet recolored on a male dark knight recolored, then changed a few things like cutting off the dk's helmet and reforming the "hair" to fit to the dragoon's.

Nice Kain update, one thing that looks odd is his belt; the dottiness brought by the white pixels- I would just simplify it. The hair just seem too fluffy and high up also.. I don't even think it should be visible from this direction.
Title: Re: Official Sprite Contest: Heroes From Other Worlds
Post by: Jon on October 05, 2012, 04:21:55 am
You're right Lijj, it does make the belt look awkward, do you think both the belt and the shoe strap things should be purple? Then only his hair would be yellows and browns. I can lower the hair a bit, but I think it is somewhat correct since there will be a purple hair tie thing on his back poses which purposely holds his hair out and away, like Zero from Megaman. Thanks for the crits!

Edit: I also just noticed I think for the first time that the original Kain sprite for SNES didn't even have any hair, or fake hair on his helmet. That was DS only, so I'm even thinking about getting rid of it altogether. Gives me more colors to work with, which I don't really need...

Jon, you should probably try to go with a different version of Kain rather than the bright teal version on snes. If you think about it, there is probably a good reason why they decided to change his bright colours into darker colours in subsequent versions.

The colours you are using at the moment are really saturated, and could probably be toned down a bit. And man, why are you using the Dark Knight sprite from wotl as a base? :P, that's a nightmare waiting to happen, the creator of those sprites did a pretty bad job of them so its really not wise to use them, try something else.
The helmet doesnt really scream Kain, you gotta make it look like his helm rather than the lancers somehow, whether that be changing the the dragon fins/wings at the back of his helmet or changing the general shape of the helm or both.
Another thing that is happening is overdoing detail. I mainly think that is to do with you using the Dark Knight as a base once again, the Dark Knight is notoriously bad for its over detailing, messiness and terrible palette. And I think that is influencing how you are going about it. However, if you were to look at the newer versions of Kain you would also see a ton of detail, which is why you need to simplify things as Lijj mentioned you should do with the belt. The same thing should really be done over.
The hair at the back... Erm, I think it shouldn't be that visible really, and the colours you are using for the blonde hair are fairlyrety saturated making it look bad, in my opinion.

Well, that is probably what should be done for now. (p.s. you said you wanted crits and here they are :P)
Title: Re: Official Sprite Contest: Heroes From Other Worlds

Yep I wanted crits, I'm really bad at spriting again since I haven't done it for a long time, so head swaps is about as good as its going to get since I suck. What body would be best for Kain?
Title: Re: Official Sprite Contest: Heroes From Other Worlds
Post by: jimmyjw88 on October 05, 2012, 07:10:13 pm
Isn't the Lancer base itself best fit for Kain? Anyway, I don't know what happen to Square Enix spriters (or any other spriters that did this sprite) but Dark Knight is the worst sprite in all of FFT. Never use it as a base...or any base at all. I think anyone of us here could simply whoop out a Dark Knight sprite that is far better than this.
Title: Re: Official Sprite Contest: Heroes From Other Worlds
Post by: Vanya on October 05, 2012, 10:59:26 pm
While I agree that the Dark Knight sprite based off the FF3ds model sucks as a DK,  it's actually not so bad as a Dragoon base since the Lancer sprite deviates quite a bit from what the traditional look that Kain originated.
Title: Re: Official Sprite Contest: Heroes From Other Worlds
Post by: jimmyjw88 on October 06, 2012, 12:08:47 am
Well, perhaps just the base form of DK, not the details. In other words, clean up the sprite; simplify the details.
Title: Re: Official Sprite Contest: Heroes From Other Worlds
Post by: Jon on October 06, 2012, 07:08:10 am
The only reason I used the DK was because he has actually the closest shaped armor to Kain than anyone else. Not only does the DK have shoulder spikes but also those 2 tail things on his back covering his legs. Honestly that's exactly how Kain looks, I can redo this and try again, which I will.

I deleted all the posts concerning the matter, and no further talk of this shall continue henceforth. I previously stated that critiques aren't necessary for this thread, its about introducing new people to spriting, having fun and seeing what crazy thing you can put together. And it is great to see new and old members posting some pretty cool looking stuff.

So back to topic, if I see anymore over the top critiques in this thread I will remove them, if this matter is mentioned again in this topic, I will remove the post (this includes even saying: "yeah I agree with Twinees, let's move on").
And that is all.

I hope to see some more entries from people and see what cool stuff people come up with.

Here's a more legit entry.. I followed the rules this time :P

This is the dude from Illusion of Gaia. I think his name's Freedan. Used Delita 2nd chapter as a base. I tried to make him as close to his original sprite as possible.

Edit: His shoulder was bothering me, little update.

Yep, his name is Freedan, and you can only play as 3 characters in that game, Will and Shadow being the others. Very nice and looks just like a 1:1 version of a FFT Freedan! Cool sword too!

There is a whole thread for this sprite I believe, I know I did some work on getting this sprite on an actual sheet. There is also another, probably better, portrait as well.

The hair looks better on that one, but not so much the pants and boots, looks like a copy paste of Elmdor. Still, that is a really great base, I might use the hair...

Well I don't like FF VIII anyways.

Here's Edge from FF IV (16 colors), its not a 1:1 version, but a FFT version of him:

Yes, there is. Need to search for the thread though. As for portrait, there's a better one (hope we are on the same page, Cheetah, haha) made by the japanese but in 64 x 96 JPEG file. I've got it scale down and redrew back the basic shapes and shading, but it is still work in progress.

As for the Goku, looking great!!

As for Squall that all sounds correct to me Jimmy, the Japanese portrait was the one I was thinking of.

As for Goku, thanks! Now that I have the base I'm considering doing a series of entries or maybe even some kind of animation. Is the hair looking okay, that alone took more time the entire rest of the sprite?

Looking good Choto, I'm a huge X-Men fan! Your color ramps could look a bit better, steal from existing sprites. Also, your zoomed version is wonky it isn't exactly x2 and is stretched wide and doesn't do the actual sprite justice.

The hair is definitely on the right track, Cheetah. And a series for some animation sounds interesting.

Wow Cheetah, that is an impressive Goku! Just one thing, could you make the spike below the biggest one a bit larger? It looks like diagonally left above his right eye the hair kinda just stops, right where the first bang starts. Really awesome, I like DB, make a whole sheet lol!

If you can only choose one of your entries, I'd like to choose this one then. Its Bartz from FF V, made from Mime for clothes, Olan's boots, Agrias arms (totally reworked) and custom hair:

I'm new to this, so coming into this thread I thought I'd be seeing a whole lot of orange/black palettes.  Something along the lines of:

That's Hal (short for "Halloween") from the Idlewild series of books by Nick Sagan (son of Carl Sagan).

As far as color, I was imagining something like a cross between Palette#3 and Palette#1 of the Male Mime:

http://www.videogamesprites.net/FinalFantasyTactics/Jobs/Mime/

Or basically something like Palette #3, but with the red replaced by orange.

Anyway, I have yet to do any spriting at all, so I don't think I'll be able to have an entry submitted by the deadline.  But I really think the FFT world could use a black/orange palette character, so I'll post it when I finish it.

Interesting concept. Hair could use a little more work. Is his skin tone yellowish?
Title: Re: Official Sprite Contest: Heroes From Other Worlds
Post by: Jon on October 18, 2012, 02:31:56 pm
Well Robrain, the colors of course are important, but more so is the base. If you're new to spriting, you should base your sprite off of an existing one, so for this character you will need something with coat, shirt and pants. Looks to me like he's wearing shoes. Try possibly Elmdor for his legs and shoes and maybe the male Mediator for the coat. Then change all the colors, and give him a head swap to something more befitting, like something from a Shrine Knight...good luck! Its probably better to try and make weird looking sprites and post them here, then people will give crits on how to improve it! Don't be embarrassed if it looks ridiculous, just post it!

This really isn't a critiquing thread, for the fifth time. It's a contest thread. If you're looking for critiques, post them elsewhere. If you're itching to offer a critique on something, send a private message or use IRC.

Only one more week to go! Make sure your submissions fit the guidelines and look how you want them to. Remember, you can update things to the very last minute if need be. Just because time is running out doesn't mean you can't still post entries! Looking forward to seeing what else people have in the works!

Its not too late, you still have 2 days to make just one forward diagonal facing frame! C'mon guys! Don't give up!

Also a quick question, I entered quite a few sprites, will all of them be counted? They are all separate from each other so I assume the answer is yes, just checking though...

All said posts about Hitler were removed. Furthermore, I have removed the post Kage used to enter Hitler.

As per Rule 8) Submissions need to loosely follow the general competition topic. The Sprite contest is titled: Heroes From Other Worlds, implying that Heroes from a world different to Final Fantasy Tactics. But it also implies Heroes, an anti-hero is not loosely a hero, therefore this, and this alone was the reason why the post regarding Hitler was removed. Furthermore, as stated in the rules, the Darth Vader made by Jon will not be considered as a valid entry.

Seriously guys, this is the second time in a thread, that is supposed to encourage the community to make sprites, where some sort of conflict has occurred. If something happens you don't agree about in the spriting section that you think may cause an issue, send me a pm.

Er, as an avid star wars fan I need to say that Darth Vader in the end fullfilled the prophecy of the jedi by killing the emperor when he couldn't stand the emperor torturing his son, ergo, vader in the end was the hero..

Very small change to the portrait and standing frames. New frames: 'walking', blocking, and a work-in-progress Soul Fist.

Oh, and stating once again that the female Chemist portrait was used as a reference to get her hair right, just for good measure.
