Final Fantasy Hacktics

All who want to participate need only post their *Chinese New Year + Valentine* themed sprites here!! =)


*Chinese New Year + Valentine* = Anything associated with China/Chinese New Year AND/OR Valentine's Day. There will be bonus points for anyone who manages to represent both themes in their entry!! For those who are curious as to the strange mix of themes, it just so happens that both holidays fall on the same day this year.

Criteria:
Best Over-all
Most Fitting to Theme
Most Creative
Chineseiest+Valentineiest/Funniest

Rules:
1 ) Most importantly you must have fun.
2 ) Obviously the entries have to have fit the theme.
3 ) Entries should be in PNG format.
4 ) Entry must be submitted in 1x & 2x size in one file for clear visibility.
5 ) The base sprite must be an official Square FFT/WotL sprite, or a custom sprite from scratch in FFT style.
6 ) Entry must have at least forward-angled frame and one other, with additional frames optional.
7 ) No resubmitting of old sprites.
8 ) Judges can't participate, duh.
9 ) There is no limit to the number of entries that can be submitted.
A ) No vulgarity.
B ) Sprites must not exceed 16 colors, but do not have any restrictions as to what colors are used.

This is my submission for the contest. I'm not new to spriting, really, but I'm new to the tactics sprites, and def new to the site. I actually started messing around with the tactics sprites as placeholders for the characters in an online D&D game I'm running. (there's a little pointless personal history for you)

I didn't want to go with the boring old idea of a beautiful woman, etc - I went a more... "whore of babylon" approach. Lust as a more consuming thing.

Yeah that color limit thing is killing me. Still trying to get used to that - I have a ton of sprites for a patch I'm working on... making the colors work? Yeah, right. I've been doing megaman (yeah, I know, but hey we all have to start somewhere) so long that I've gotten used to the 32+ colors... honestly, I shouldn't be complaining about less work, me thinks O.o

Ah, crap... got the Valentines bit... somehow the Chinese New Year bit didn't click though... sigh.
Well, it's the year of the Tiger... maybe I'll modify the behemoth body into a tiger pattern... and stay in 16 colors... >.<

You've got plenty of time before the deadline at least. ^_^

Okay, here we go: So, Lust v2 (Tiger style)
Took away some clothing to go with more of a lust feel (as, for some reason, Behemoth purple screams "whore of babylon" to me, but tiger pattern doesn't)
Added a freakish external heart (ala Astaroth of Soul Calibur fame) to... I don't know, fit into the Valentines theme I guess

and yeah... I didn't see anything in the rules regarding a color limit O.o I can go back and count, but I have a feeling this sucker is a little more than 16 colors...

Edit: yeah... 33. Oops.

So Lust: Dancer + Behemoth + Custom

too brriiiiiight OW. Reduce the colors to 16 (Its only fair, as tactics sprites are 16) and PLEASE make my eyes stop bleeding! xD looks great though, the back view confuses me though

Hahaha. It is REALLY bright. Yeah I know I need to reduce the colors... but I don't wanna ! Not that I think it looks better with more colors, it's just I'm sooooo lazy. Guess I'll have to though.

The only reason I went so bright with the body was to highlight the orange. You don't think she'll look bad if I drop the color down?

Was gonna do a summoning animation (the back view) but decided to leave her as is - basically just to get a wing stretch going.

As a judge, I dunno if it'd be fair to make suggestions on how to fix it, but I think you can pull it off.

@Vampdragonlord - yeah, I gotta admit; I only dropped shade of orange and it did wonders to fix the color- she's still a bit bright for your average FFT sprite, but no brighter than the behemoth I guess. Good suggestion though, she looks a lot better.

Alrighty, dropped the colors down to 16 exactly (tough to do without losing the integrity of the original image, but hey, I like a challenge)

Went with the tiger theme all around, dropped the 14 different shades of black in favor of 5 o.o and decided to drop the pink and gold as well (silver bracelets/belt using the wings)

Unfortunatley, due to the tiger stripe pattern continuing on the face, I lost the eyes, so she gets the stereotypical cop-out "glowing demon eyes"; ah well.

Hah, good stuff! That heart is freakin' intense. Good job, Ton.

I foresee some very interesting sprites being submitted for this contest. I can't wait.

i was really just telling him to drop it to the color limit (since its a FFT competition, not a spriting in general competition)

Colors are still a bit too bright for FFT style, but much better anyway.

@VampragonLord - Don't worry, I was genuinely thanking you for your input, she looks a lot better now. I dropped the color tone a little more to a bit of a dusty orange, and you're right, it makes a world of difference (I put her on a FFT map to color test and I was appalled at how insanely bright the colors were)

@mav - You like the heart? It turned out a lot better than I had expected. It stands out a little more on the original version (yellow fur) but it looks better on the black fur, I think.

I suggest starting with one theme and then adapting it to the other. For example, you could do a guy in one of those dragon suits and then give him Valentine colors and accessories. Or the other way around; make a cupid lookin' character and then put him in a kung-fu suit.

Okay I get it one question though, what zodiac symbols chinese have?

I'm going to work another sprite but that'll probably be my final submissions as no time to sprite soon.

According to tales and legends, the beginning of Chinese New Year started with the fight against a mythical beast called the Nien (Chinese: 年; pinyin: nián). Nien would come on the first day of New Year to devour livestock, crops, and even villagers, especially children.

I can take on a judge position. I like heavy armor and helmets with crazy horns so it should work out well. Plus I have no time to sprite but judging should be totally doable.

I wanted to do one, but I'm lacking time, and also I dunno exactly the theme it should be done in (for CNY, not valentine )

Just read up on Chinese New Years for some ideas.

I had idea some time ago, but I forgot it, and I just cannot think of anything else, I know for sure that I wanted to mix it with snake (Chinese zodiac), but I forgot the idea for valentine :/

I've been trying to come up with another one, just for the hell of it, but I haven't really been able to come up with one that I like that fits both themes I like to consider myself creative, but I have to say this one is a bit above my current level of concentration. If anything, Vanya you should be proud you could come up with a theme this well thought out/put together and yet still capable of stopping many of us in our tracks ^^`

Yeah, and for two reasons, either or both;
First, spriters are busy.
Second, the combination theme is tough.

I had thought you guys gave up on waiting for my results a while ago.  I need to remember to post them tomorrow since I was wrong about that.

My response:

1. Jimmy, the date.  Fit the feel of both, creative, very clean edit, and the guy being attacked was amusing.
2. Jimmy, the tiger cupid.  Fit both sufficiently, creative, and overall a solid looking edit.
3. Tonb3rry, St. Valentine.  Fit Valentines, decent edit though it had a few problems, used some original art (as far as I could tell).
4. Kokojo, Altima.  Decent edit, the heart and flower do not blend in nearly as well as they could, disturbing and amusing.
5. Tonb3rry, Lust.  Fit the themes to some degree, but Cheetah is right, it got worse as you continued.  The boobs are too outlined in the original but are barely noticeable at all in the latest, so you jumped between extremes there.  Overall it has potential, but that potential was not sufficiently met.

5. Tonb3rry, St. Valentine. Well, it fits the Valentine theme pretty decently. It's not as well executed or inventive as some of the others, but it's got some appeal to it.
4. Kokojo, Altima edit. Hilarious edit. While it may not have fit both themes perfectly, Koko did a great job defending his choice. That, and the sheer hilarity of the sprite got it this rank.
3. Tonb3rry, Lust. I was extremely impressed with the original design. The toned down version was so-so, but you can see the effort in this sprite. It's probably the most creative in this competition.
2. Jimmy, the date. I'm a sucker for good-looking sprites, so this one was a clear front runner. The only area it may have lagged in was for meeting the Chinese New Year criteria. Still a fine submission though--I wouldn't mind seeing it completed as a full sprite.
1. Jimmy, Cupid Cub. Hit both criterion on the head, it was designed well, followed the rules, and was freaking cute as hell. Great submission.
