the pillow shading of the hair really sticks out as an eyesore... work on where the light source comes from

Quote from: "Fein"I resized it in paint because I was being lazy and didn't do it in another program, and for some reason paint does that to me.
Yeah, you can resize it in Paint proportionally too: box around it, right click, hit Resize/Skew and just type in 200 or 400 for the percent and you'll be good to go. Right now it looks like you resized by hand. Which is both tough and shoddy.

Here's a link on shading pixel art if you are like me and didn't know exactly what "pillow shading" means:  http://www.natomic.com/hosted/marks/mpat/shading.html

To summarize, choose a direction for your light source and stick with it for the whole sprite.  I think most sprites here assume light comes from the top left of the image, but I don't think that matters because the sprite poses are mirrored in game.  As long as your light direction isn't "from the viewer" you should be good.

That's a great link there, Tersius.
I must say.. I have read that also when I started pixel art.

Sorry for the bump, but I just wanted to get some critique here.

So, I started to kind of make the Solder from FFTA, but It just kinda turned into this:

I still like it though. The colors are a bit bright because that's the way it was in FFTA, will probably tone those down, and then do a portrait.

Yeah, I plan to change it.

It needs more color in general. Most 2-tone sprites look pretty bland. It's a good start though.

Okay, so I changed the pallet to the Blue Squire, and I added a bit of armor to "spice" it up. Portrait to come.

Hmm.. Looks too light, but fine. Maybe borrow the blue shades from the black mage?
The armor is way better, btw.

Haha, lucky you, most people get dragged to hell.

Alright, I'll see what it looks like with the blue mage's blue.

What else do you think I could do, Zozma?

well the belt on the side view doesnt look like the front one which curves in around the armor. which one is the right way?

but its looking better, the hat seems to have more depth with the new colors as well which is good

Yes, blue mage's blue should be worth a try.

So, I like the Black mage's colors better. I also made the belt so it isn't curving around the armor. I'm not sure if I did it right though.

Good colors, I suggest you lighten the lightest blue, and darken the darkest blue a bit. :)
Belt before was better, since it's aligned with the pants.

Great start. You definitely got rid of most of the problems.
What's left are some touching up with the shadings, mainly between the transition
of the blue thing (don't know what it's called) and the skin\hair.

I edited it.. hope this helps..
