It occurred to me just now that since it is fairly easy to make custom mini-bosses by using blank jobs and slapping on a monster sprite that it might be cool to have extra rare monsters like in FF12.

Grimalkin, for example is a stronger version of the normal Coeurl. It could be placed into a random battle with a low chance to appear. Give it a larger list of abilities and innates with immunity to invite, and thee you go. Give it a better set of items to drop and poach and there you go.
Good idea?

This is already happening in 1.3 (and so are many other types of novelty battles). There is a super Dark Behemoth with 12 skills, immortality (blocks invite as well as several other powerful status) and Zodiac stats, and you battle against it with a party of 12 (7 guest knights and lancers headed up by an immortal "General" knight with Holy Sword)

Also, an immortal, Zodiac status Ultima Demon at Finath River which I have played against and thoroughly enjoyed.

Nither of these required new jobs since you can force certain things with the entd though I have a feeling your alternate palette Coerl might require one.

I am all for this idea, by the way. The more cool random battle ideas, the better.

Also, would it be a bit too cheap to do a re-palette of a Zodiac Boss and pass that off as a special monster?

Cool, I haven't been keeping up with 1.3 so I didn't know too much about that stuff.

I think recolored zodiacs are ok, but it'll depend a lot on how you name them.
Passing off a zodiac as a completely different monster might sound cheap to some. If you made something like the Heretic summon monsters from FF10 they might be received better.

If you have any ideas for 1.3 randoms, check that out

or if you're working on your own patch, then yes! custom randoms = win

If I come up with anything I'll make sure to post! =)
I'm definitely using rare monsters for my hack though.

We just inserted another special battle. 5 Chemist/engineers team up with a special Steel Giant with Item and Snipe (26, same as Chemists since he is built in their image). Technically a "boss" but nowhere near as powerful as the Behemoth or Ultima Demon.

Also, with the recoloured Zodiacs, the FF games have a long history of passing off palette swaps as special monsters. Would be right up their alley.
