auto-equip optimal equipment: left hand

when changing a class or assigning a support skill which results in "optimal" equipment to be equipped, why does a character occasionally have the weapon assigned to the left hand and a shield assigned to the right?  is there an advantage or disadvantage of which i am unaware?
