Spriting / "Made" a new sword skill
October 03, 2020, 03:22:12 pm
I've always been a bit unhappy with how Dark Knight sword skills were just refiltered assets from other abilities, so I messed around and came up with this. It's just the blade/moon thing from Divine Knight's Blastar punch stuck in the middle of one of the Lucavi status spells (Nightmare)then given the palette of poison from Black magic. It lacks the punch of a swordskill thanks to the original ability sprite being a little slow and there's not really a sharp sound anywhere, but I think it looks alright. I'm happy with it as it's about the extent of my current ability but if anyone else feels like using it/improving it I'll toss up the effect sprite:

Spriting / Jon's Ramza in Delita's armor palette change
September 05, 2020, 10:31:29 pm
Jon's original he made is the green but I decided I'd prefer blue so I swapped the green for the blueish teals on Ramza's ch.4 armor. On the off chance someone wants to use it. I personally really like it because I always thought Delita's armor was great but you know...he kinda sucks. No message is associated with this attachment.

Yup, exactly the issue I was having. Lesson learned, from now on TacText is a one and done kinda thing lol thanks guys

So, I was thinking if someone felt ambitious, Sora could be a cool one. I personally think his KH2 appearance, or even KH3 is best. I know these don't exactly get fulfilled but throwing it out there lol. I'd attempt myself but I don't have an artistic bone in my body and trying it on my laptop touch pad sounds painful.

I'm not too experienced with reviews, so I think I'll just split it up into 2 parts.
Story Honestly was very pleasantly surprised with this story which from the initial premise sounds like it should be a cringey fanfiction written by a high schooler. But, once you start it, the story melds together quite well and was actually quite interesting to see how the aftermath of FFT could have played out, and the references absolutely crack me up. There's already this preset notion of being able to summon people from other worlds and Ramza being a hostage of sorts because Delita refuses to kill him because of their past and his deeds also was more fluid than expected. I think with the story I only really have 2 problems which are really just personal gripes.
 1. Snake. I've never payed MGS but I just don't get the feeling like he fits in this high fantasy medieval world of magic and monsters. Someone like Ryu from Ninja Gaiden or something would be my personal choice.
2. At times I felt a bit of a disconnect. As much as I can see it, it seems to me like Delita would just off Ramza and be done with it. He's a chronic backstabber afterall.
but again, minor personal gripes that to me have no reflection on the story.

Gameplay Overall, very fun. Interesting new takes on abilities and better descriptions to actually understand what they do- where in vanilla they can be quite misleading at times. I enjoyed the separation of weapon locks such as Knights equiping swords/ knightswords/ and katana, Dante being a jack of all trades of sorts, made for very interesting situations. The new job changes are for the most part to my liking, especially archer (hunter), though Black magic feels a bit off and unbalanced to me and i'm 50/50 on knights. Magic in general all has much larger ranges which is both interesting and kind of annoying. I think there's a bit of an overreliance on MP which can easily reduce a unit to just being an MP restore bot (Snake in my case get rekt), so personally I'd think reducing some MP costs could be beneficial. Agrias's usefulness is pretty heavily reduced between needing MP and her sword skills also having a much lower hit rate. The largest issue I find with the gameplay itself is the random encounters (not counted in any of my scores because I understand it's being fixed). They are. So ridiculous.I can't. I struggled more on them than any fight in the game besides Sweegy woods (the entire enemy party being able to heal itself there is a bit crap). Also Cloud's Limits are still kinda poop. Again, most of these are small personal gripes that don't actually have much of an affect on how I enjoyed playing this. Besides the random encounters (seriously screw those turtles)

Overall, the work that went into this and the finished product is incredible. The events and dialogue alone could make it worth a try, but any fan of FFT gameplay should try it out too. There's a re-release coming that I think will fix most of the issues people may have. Oh and it's pretty.
Hopefully this wasn't a jumbled mess of thoughts.

So, noticing that the original topic of this post is 7 years old or so....

Is it still the correct way to insert formation sprites for WOTL? or has an update somewhere to something made it easier

so many posts here are so many years old, it's hard to know what exactly is still accurate

again inquiring about the PSP version (specifically formation sprites), not the PSX

Help! / Re: How to best do some small changes

I'm not seeing UMDGen in the tools list, is there maybe any link to a particular version or maybe even a thread on how it use it? I searched but couldn't seem to find anything here

And Tactext is known to be finicky. Sometimes you need to save the tactext patch, close Tactext, and reopen the patch.

Or if you're editing the PSX version, look for the Text Helper spreadsheet instead; it generates Tactext patches that are far more viable.

I didn't the first attempt but I tried the quick edit just now with the same result. Also just tried saving and reopening and getting the same result. I'm editing the PSP WOTL version

I was reading through solutions here and can't seem to find any other form of solution besides deleting the kanji in that location, and I'm a bit hesitant to do that.

edit: ah okay, the problem might be that I was trying to reload a previously text edited ISO patch (changed Ramza's ch.4 Job name previously) so I'm gonna try a fresh patch and to save over the ISO I used

edit 2: Well, starting from a clean ISO and patching over my other ISO seemed to work. Unsure of what the job requirements in quick edits actually changes though, may have to redo and change the job description there as well?

So I was fiddling with the arithmetician job in WOTL, and decided to change it into a general magic class.

But when I use the text editor to change the job name/ skillset name etc and go to patch my ISO, I get an error message that says "DTE for OPEN.LZW has failed. ISO has not been modified"

Even though I haven't touched the text in this location. It doesn't seem to matter how little I change so it didn't appear to be a size issue and after reading the document about DTE's and how the bytes work, I'm feeling like I'm missing something because it shouldn't be a byte issue either?

Help! / Re: How to best do some small changes
August 23, 2020, 09:11:12 pm
Yeah the only one I had trouble with were the alternate Cloud versions, which gave me an error no matter which one or even if BMP or SPR was used. The others seem to insert fine but from reading around here, the palette's of them may be messed up or I may have only added the battle sprites and not the formation ones? I couldn't find any option to change palette or formation sprite so that may be the next problem.

Help! / How to best do some small changes
August 23, 2020, 06:13:18 pm
Hi, hello, I've known about this site and FFT hacking as a whole for quite some time now and I'm finally gonna give some edits a try and downloaded the FFTPatcher suite programs. But I have some questions about the best way to do it so I'll lay them out and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

I only want to do some smaller things like changing job names and replacing some sprites with the great custom sprites that I've seen here. However I really love most of the changes in wotl, especially the cutscenes and name/text changes, and it's my understanding that it's much more difficult to work with.

So my question is, should I just patch a PSx version and try to fumble my way through that? or can what I want to do be done on WOTL?

*I should note that I do have some experience with other game editors  :wark:
