Gosh, those are amazing... o.0

I know when it comes to spritesheets you go off of an existing sprite. Is this the same for portraits?

Well, yes and no. Yes, many people do go off existing portraits and modify to create "new" ones (I do this extensively), but no, you don't have to. Smash and Curu, for example, could whip up phenomenal custom portraits without any bases at all. It's really more about skill-level than necessity.

That sounds like it'd be kind of difficult. What program do you use to make portraits? Is there a certain one that is more acceptable than others?
Thank you for replying, by the way. I'd like getting into spriting - or, at least, making portraits first - and I was wondering where to start. The Japanese seem to have a really good artist/team. :D Those portraits are great.

I use MS Paint to cut, copy, and paste eyes, ears, hair, etc from portrait to portrait till I get something I like. Simultaneously, I work on the palette. After I have a somewhat uniform palette, I usually post a version or two here on the board and continue refining it over and over again. After it looks decent, I incorporate people's suggestions and then I may reduce the colors to 16 (or so) in Macromedia Fireworks. Even after it's 16 colors, I still find myself cleaning it up. I think I'll post like 6 or 7 versions before the final one...

Then again, I am by no means the standard around here, so...

Yeah, I've lurked around the spriting forum and there's usually several portraits/sprites posted in each topic. I'm kind of interested in making portraits for Disgaea characters and then, if I get confident enough, make the sprites to accompany those portraits. Do you sprite as well?

Spriting takes too much time, skill, and patience for me--so no, I don't sprite...

By the way, could someone link me to the Japanese site? I always seem to lose it, and I'd really like to keep track on what they're working on...

I'd like to see what they're doing, too. Do they do patches?

I actually found it previously but I lost it and now I can't find it. So, if anyone can post the link would be appreciated.
Kindly upload the images to other image hosting sites. I can't view imageshack. Thanks.

Oh, cool, it's Etna! ^^ I could try to mess with it, but my initial attempt at portrait art looks like ****.

Not by the Japanese site, but this is still a really good portrait done by some guy over at pixeljoint:

Sounds like someone we should bring into the fold haha.

Oh here is another guy with a portrait and a decent looking almost isometric Tonberry:

If anyone wants to give a try speaking with the Japanese admin, go ahead. I'm sick of a talk that goes nowhere. It's already annoying enough to have someone else post for you and he doesn't want to e-mail me. What does sending an e-mail cost? >_>

Love what you're seeing? https://supportus.ffhacktics.com/ 💜 it's really appreciated

Anything is possible as long as it is within the hardware's limits. (ie. disc space, RAM, Video RAM, processor, etc.)
