Who will be the 1000th replier to this truly useless thread? Oh wait, it's me.

Definitely play it then. You will kill so many of the bastards you couldn't possibly be scared of them afterwards.

I am on my 4th (or 5th) playthrough of Fallout: New Vegas since I bought the game about 3 weeks ago. There is still so much I haven't done and so many ways of playing that I want to try. Best game I have ever played.

Old Project Ideas / Re: Patch Proposals/Ideas Thread

My god. A story hack that actually stands a chance.

Is it possible that someone read the Old Testament and decided to position himself as a messiah? I mean, I could believe that, or I could believe that some space wizard sent a guy to die on a cross, which seems like an abstract solution to the problems of the time.

Quote from: "Jon"Fact: Strangely enough, these now 11 disciples (Judas killed himself) who were mainly made up of simple fishermen suddenly decided to go out and preach, and the Catholic church was founded. Now every normal man who would have been following Jesus around would have turned tail and went home after he was crusified out of fear for his own life. Why in the world would they risk their lives in foreign countries and actually some got killed for it if they knew that this all was some sort of big joke? .

Human behaviour is complex and multi-faceted. If you think that the words of a self-purported saviour must be true because people decided to follow him at great risk to themselves, I'm afraid I will have to direct your attention to the entirety of human history. There are thousands of examples of people wandering off on misguided adventures at the behest of propaganda or a charismatic leader.

Yeah some hillbilly motherfuckers were basically calling his wife evil at the worst moment of her life, so let's get up-in-arms about HIS attitude. Are you fucking retarded or something?

I still can't believe someone got this worked up because they wanted to play each version of 1.3. Fucking amazing.

A patch is events. None of what you have written in this thread constitutes a patch by any stretch of the imagination or even starting a patch. Sprites, jobs and abilities are non-essential. Do events first if you don't want your game to end up like the dozens of unfinished patches that have come before.

Making a patch is probably not going to be a great deal of fun, especially if you want to create a new story and a new world. Here is where most patch ideas go wrong:

1) You have an elaborate fantasy world with a great story and a million characters. Who cares. Your lore isn't going to get a game made. 99% of making this world happen is event editing and other mindless drudgery. Can you edit events and are you willing to? Does your patch need ASM hacks and who is going to supply them? These are the relevant questions and until you can answer them, kindly keep your elf story to yourself.

2) Your idea is probably too big. I've said this before, but a lot of people around here don't seem to have much of a frame of reference outside of huge, bloated JRPGS. When the time comes to make a patch, people want to make something as large in scope as a normal JRPG because they don't have faith in the elegance of shorter stories or don't have the requisite experience with storytelling in other forms to realise that short, succinct stories can be better and more worthwhile than huge, bloated epics. Most people are not good writers, but many people want to make a game or a patch. Think small. Learn the art of being concise and removing elements from your story that are beloved but unnecessary.

Common counter arguments:

1) I'm working alone. Cut me some slack.
A: Working alone is only a big deal if your idea is beyond the capability of one person. You may love the idea you are working on, but it might not be a project you can complete. There will be other, smaller ideas that you love.

2) I'm doing it for fun.
A: I find it hard to believe people enjoy working on unfinishable projects. If you're throwing work at a project, that is work you are intending to drive the project towards completion. That is what you want. Don't then try to cop out of this by insinuating that finishing is optional. You want to finish, admit it. Then admit that your project is beyond your means.

3) Real life gets in the way.
A: It invariably does when you take on a project that requires 5 straight years of your life.

This is an article written by the creator of Spelunky about finishing games. Everyone needs to read it: http://makegames.tumblr.com/post/1136623767/finishing-a-game

"Writing your idea down is not starting the damn game. Writing a design document is not starting the damn game. Assembling a team is not starting the damn game. Even doing graphics or music is not starting the damn game. It's easy to confuse "preparing to start the damn game" with "starting the damn game". Just remember: a damn game can be played, and if you have not created something that can be played, it's not a damn game!"

I don't care about laziness. I'm the laziest person I know. But for that reason, I don't start huge projects. You can even work hard and still finish nothing because you set yourself some impossible goals. I think that's more a problem than anything else here. The amount of actual work that, say, LD has done on Mercs, isn't inconsiderable. It's just nowhere near enough to get a project of that size out the door. I keep saying this, but it really feels like people have no faith in shorter stories because their only frame of reference is terrible, bloated, JRPGs.

Honestly, until someone directed my attention to this thread and forum today, I thought remix was just in development limbo for eternity and wrote it off. But if Zozma is actually on the verge of releasing something, then I think this argument might be wasted here. As long as there is some forward momentum, something people can actually play, I'm good with it. I don't even care if it sucks.

The King of Ivalice / Re: KoI's Sprite Thread
October 17, 2010, 02:32:40 am
Same critiques I always make about these sprites. All of Lijj's ports need to be redone by mav or someone competent and a lot of the palettes for sprites that come from IA are pretty ugly to look at. The cleric sprites have a lot of problems. The hoods in particular appear to be shaded on all sides and a little too minimally. The female Cleric should be made from scratch in my opinion. It's pretty boring.

Do some palettes with more contrast between the gloves and body. Like palettes 2 and 3

The head is way too small. His eyebrow meets his sideburns. I'm also not sure about the musculature to the left below his head. It sort of looks like his head is turning to his right but the angle of his neck says otherwise. You might want to use a reference for that
