Please Read first!

Welcome! ^_^ I'm posting this topic to display all the guides I'm writing for the moment so not only does it not cultter the forums with various guide topics, but it's also organized. I'll be putting a headline or name at the start of each new reply to let you know which guide it is.

Please don't reply to this topic directly, but instead if you have a question or comment, reply to the "Guides" topic found here in the General FFT forum, so that this stays clean and easy to read or send me a PM, whichever works for you. Thanks!

Applying a patch (PSX version, manual)

First get CD Mage Beta- http://www.ffhacktics.com/forum/download.php?id=1342

Use it to open your image file (.img) and extract the SCUS_942.21 and BATTLE.BIN files (BATTLE.BIN is used only when you change the GFX, or graphics image, of an ability, change the Font section of the FFT Patcher, or change around the Monster Skills.) and remember where you extract them too! Then open up the FFT Patcher and go up top and find the patch SCUS_942.21 and patch BATTLE.BIN options. Patch the appropiate files.

Before continuing I strongly suggest making a copy of your original image file just in case something gets messed up. Anyways open cd mage again, open the image file go to the SCUS_942.21 file, right click and select import and find the file you patched then select it, do the same for the BATTLE.BIN if you need to. And voila it should be done.

Also be sure to note that the ENTD section of the patcher requires special attention. It's the event editor that allows you to change levels, sprites, job classes, and equipment among other things for either cut-scenes (not usually named) or battles. This is how you edit ENTD files and apply them;

• Open FFT Patcher
• Open your patch
• Go to the ENTD tab
• Make whatever changes you want to it
• File -> Generate ENTD Files
• It'll ask you what folder you want to put them in. For simplicity, put it in the FFT Patcher/ENTD Files folder. If you haven't made it yet, do so and select it.
• Open CD Mage
• Open the FFT ISO image file
• Open your battle folder
• Find "ENTD1.ENT," "ENTD2.ENT," ENTD3.ENT," and "ENTD4.ENT."
• Right-click on ENTD1.ENT and select import
• Go to FFT Patcher/ENTD Files folder and select ENTD1.ENT
• Repeat the two steps above for ENTD2.ENT, ENTD3.ENT, and ENTD4.ENT
• Close CD Mage
• Run FFT ISO

This is also a nice little useful program. What it does is helps you figure out the growth status ability of the job classes to get just what you want. Something to remember, higher multiplers are better and lower growths is better, while low multiplers is bad and high growths are bad; www.geocities.com/sigmahaven/lvlsimbeta.zip

Replacing Sprites in  the Formation Screens[/u] (PSX Version)

• Opened Sprite Editor
Sprite Editor: File -> Open: UNIT.BIN
Note: Shishi's Sprite Editor comes with the latest version of FFT Patcher and when opening the UNIT.BIN file, simply type "UNIT.BIN" (without quotes) in the text field when it asks you which file you want to open and then click open.[/list]
Sprite Editor: Palette -> Save: .PAL File (1_1.PAL)
Sprite Editor: File -> Open: .SPR File
Sprite Editor: Palette -> Save: .PAL File (1_2.PAL)
Sprite Editor: File -> Export: .BMP File (1_2.BMP)
• Right-clicked on .BMP File (1_2.BMP) -> Open With: Editing Program (GIMP Works fine here)
Editing Program: Selected the right-forward position exactly
Editing Program: Edit -> Cut/Copy (They do the same thing)
Sprite Editor: File -> Open: UNIT.BIN
Sprite Editor: Palette -> Open: .PAL File (1_2.PAL)
Sprite Editor: File -> Export: .BMP File (1_1.BMP)
• Right-clicked on .BMP (1_1.BMP) -> Open With: Editing Program
Editing Program: Edit-> Paste
Editing Program: Moved copied sprite over the Sprite
Editing Program): File -> Save (1_1.BMP)
Sprite Editor: File -> Import: .BMP File (1_1.BMP)
Sprite Editor: Palette -> Open: .PAL File (1_1.PAL)
Sprite Editor: File -> Save As: UNIT.BIN
CD Mage: Open FFT.img
CD Mage: Open Events Folder
CD Mage: Right-click UNIT.BIN and select Import: UNIT.BIN
• Close CD Mage
• Start FFT ISO

- - - - - - - - -

Also in order to edit Palette colors;

• Download the attached SNESPal.zip
• Unzip it & Open it
• File -> Open: UNIT.BIN
• Starting with Ramza's sprite at 00F000, scroll right to find your sprite.
• Every new one is 000020 over.
• Example; Ramza Chapter one is 00F000 and Ramza Chapter 2 is 00F020
• To match colors exactly, open up your editing program and find the numbers of the color, than devide by 8. Like if the color has 16 Red in it, put 2 Red in SNES Pal.

• File -> Save

How to Edit and Save Text files (PSX Version - The PSP Version is extremely glitchy right now) [Credits: SentialBlade]

Warning (1): Before going any futher, be sure to note that you can only go 5-10 bytes over the original size at maximum, but I strongly suggest you either stay at the exact same byte length or lower. Also, editing WORLD.BIN is very picky. You must keep the same exact byte size and if you go over or under, you must correct it in that section. Example, if you go over/under 1 byte in the skillset names, you must delete/add 1 byte in the skillset names, not job names or anything else.
Note: For abilities, add " Nothing" (with the space) to the top slot "<Nothing>" for it to displayed correctly. Shops are still glitched though.

• Extract ATCHELP.LZW, ATTACK.OUT, SMALL.OUT, HELPMENU.OUT, JOIN.LZW, REQUIRE.OUT, OPEN.LZW, SAMPLE.LZW, BATTLE.BIN, WLDHELP.LZW, & WORLD.LZW from your FFT ISO using CD Mage.
• Start up FFTacText Editor.
• File -> New PSX Text
• PSX -> Any file besides SNPLMES.BIN or WLDMES.BIN
• Look through the pull-down menu for what you wish to edit (3).
• Start editing text, making sure you leave {END} if it appears (2).
• Once satisfied with the edit, select the files in the lower-right window (4).
• Then select "Save to selected file" (5) and find the extracted file from the ISO.
• Repeat until you've edited all you've wanted to edit.
• Open CD Mage and FFT ISO.
• Import all the related files.
• Start FFT and be sure to test in and outside of battle to make sure all text is working correctly.

Someone may want to link to the SNESPal utility from the tutorial page on the main site. I had to hunt a little while to find this topic and download it.

Editing Skill Animations

• Download WindHex (Hex Editing Program)
• Download CDMage (if you haven't already)
• Set-up CDMage and open your .img file (choose M2)
• Right-click BATTLE.BIN and export file
• Close CDMage & Open WindHex
• Open file for editing -> BATTLE.BIN
• Look below at the table for which skill animation you wish to edit.
• Search -> Go to Offset -> Type in code for the skill (Example: 2D30B)
• Now keep this code in mind or write it down somewhere (notepad works fine too, or just search for it again later).
• Now search for the skill animation that you wish to replace the desired skill animation with (example, wanting to replace a cure animation with a spin fist animation).
• Now, from the highlighted box, count three sections over (for example, |07|00|00|) and remember the code.
• Find the original skill animation again and replace that code with the new one.
• Example;
    Sword Skill animations are |07|00|00| and a Sunken State animation is |10|6D|00|. To make a Sword Skill use the Sunken State animation, you go to the Sword Skill address listed from below and replace it with |10|6D|00| and you will see the person crouched and touch the ground instead of swing a sword (assuming Weapon Strike is not checked).
Hint: If trying to change any animation to a weapon strike, use 070000 - the reason for this is because it's the animation used for all sword strike abilities, rather than normal attack, so it works a lot better.
