Title: SCC Class picks
Post by: Barren on July 21, 2015, 12:06:36 pm
For those who want to enter the SCC Tournament coming up in a couple of weeks, I think we should have a rule implying that only 2 of the same class can be picked. For example 2 people can pick a team of monks or 2 people can pick a team of geomancers. You can still have the freedom to pick whats best for you. The reason being is that this would encourage to have players pick different classes for this tourney. If anyone has a problem or is skeptical about it please post your thoughts here and this can be resolved

Can this be dependent on the size of the competitor pool? Twelve is 2, Eighteen is 3 and Twenty-four plus is 4? (So that still forces six different classes.)

Normally we like to have a block of players that is using a variety of different classes i.e. one block has a team of squires, chemists, priests, archers. And another block of teams etc. In the case of double elimination its just your typical bracket with a winner's and loser's bracket

Right, my mind was still on Round Robin, in any other case, we'd be stuck to two for certain. Any way we do it is fine with me.

I disagree.

if 8 people want to be thief, so be it. You can build to counter, knowing the current meta. The whole first come first serve is even worse. Get an experienced guy with thief or archer and a late registration choice of summoner or wizard? no thanks.

If everyone feels that we shouldn't have to be restricted to picking classes then so shall it be.
Title: Re: SCC Class picks
Post by: Shintroy on July 21, 2015, 12:41:44 pm
I'm with Rouroni on not wanting a first come first served tournament. If anything's going to be restricted let's keep it at items and abilities like in the other SCC thread.

I'm not going to make my team until I see how many squire, ninja, and samurai teams are made. I might not even try to win this tournament. I might just act as a gatekeeper for thief teams. Who knows.
Title: Re: SCC Class picks
Post by: Mudvayne on July 21, 2015, 01:00:44 pm
Is everybody opposed to letting RNG decide classes? I think that would spice things up a lot.

I just don't want a tourney that is going to end up showcasing only a few classes. I feel with the rng deciding, every class will be used and that can show exactly what classes need tweaking.

If no one else is with me on this, fine. I don't agree on 1 item/ability though, either, especially for classes like say ninja. Is there even 8 ninja swords to pick from?  I think putting 2 item/1 ability restriction may be slightly better.

You can still use Koga/Iga Knife and hidden knife + repel knife and dual cutter + platina dagger and Ninja Knife + Ninja Edge combo if you're asking about the ninja class. Even ninjas with flails can be fun to see

At least Thieves have some more choices.
Title: Re: SCC Class picks
Post by: gatebuster202 on July 21, 2015, 01:06:01 pm
I'll reiterate my other post. We can run up a vote to ban three classes, one for speed, one for PA, one for MA, or just a two class highest two votes ban. Now, this seems far more fair then first come first serve. I've played enough Magic and Pokemon to know that the Meta must be anticipated by the TO to effectively build a fair tournament. (WH 40k could learn a few lessons.)

I can go either way on items, there are merits to both choices.

One ability is totally fine. Keeps the AI from going haywire.
Title: Re: SCC Class picks
Post by: Barren on July 21, 2015, 01:09:10 pm
Is everyone in agree with banning high tier classes of their respective stat?

Because the three classes to be banned as far as primary would be monks, scholars, and thieves.
Title: Re: SCC Class picks
Post by: Mudvayne on July 21, 2015, 01:10:04 pm
Not at all. I want the exact opposite. I want every class to be picked by someone, so we can showcase every class in order to help improve with the next set of updates to arena. I think this is almost a must.

If there are classes that no-one wants to pick, that should be a red flag. There should be no class that is so obviously underpowered to the point of not wanting to even use the class. That means this class is in need of an obvious buff. I don't really think any class is at a large enough disadvantage to where it makes things unfair.

Post by: Barren on July 21, 2015, 01:11:29 pm
That's what I had last tournament for that exact purpose mudvayne. If you look at FFH's youtube page I hosted a SCC AI Tourney back in 2012 going into 2013. Pretty much every class (except for mime) was showcased there.

Post by: gatebuster202 on July 21, 2015, 01:23:13 pm
Lets do this. People can call their class preferences in two days. This gives us an idea of the variety. To make it easier, lets have everyone call two classes. From their we can see what potiential spread we have. Crunch numbers and do some thinking.
Title: Re: SCC Class picks
Post by: Heroebal on July 21, 2015, 02:37:44 pm
This sounds like fun. I'll probably just roll out bards since I already have most of the team built up with Bards-R-US. Just will have to tinker it a little to fit rules. I think i'll make up some other class themes too see how they are.
Title: Re: SCC Class picks
Post by: Jumza on July 21, 2015, 02:42:23 pm
If we are going 1 per class then I'd say go with Mudvayne's plan and RNG it once we have all the participants, if we are doing multiple entrants per class, I'd be fine with that too. But if we do limit just a little bit (say 2 people per class as was suggested) then we should have a certain day and time when the topic opens that will allow us to choose what we want.
Title: Re: SCC Class picks
Post by: Barren on July 21, 2015, 03:42:30 pm
I can open that topic sometime after we decide the actual rules of the tournament. There's quite a bit of back and forth going on. But regardless of how it will go I just want everyone to have fun
Title: Re: SCC Class picks
Post by: Corosar on July 21, 2015, 04:05:29 pm
I was hoping to build a team around a group of summoners... honestly if i don't have the right to do so... i really... really rather skip out on this.... i prefer we have the right to choose whatever class we wish...
Title: Re: SCC Class picks
Post by: dw6561 on July 21, 2015, 05:01:55 pm
I would prefer it if we could choose our own class as well. I was going to do geomancers because they are my favorite class.
Title: Re: SCC Class picks
Post by: Barren on July 21, 2015, 05:04:08 pm
You can still pick geomancers. I updated the ruling for the no jp cap to 2x abilities. What Gaignun was suggesting is pick 2 of your favorite classes and between the two its randomized what you get like odds and evens. If the majority would rather keep it simple and pick your class then that's what we will do
Title: Re: SCC Class picks
Post by: silentkaster on July 21, 2015, 05:55:57 pm
Any class is fine. I heavily, strongly do not want to do an all Mime team just due to the glitches and lack of being able to take advantage of that class with all Mimes. But I will create a team based on the least used class and/or if a host specifically tells me to make a team based on a certain class.
Title: Re: SCC Class picks
Post by: Shintroy on July 21, 2015, 06:09:08 pm
Mime can crash the game? How?
Title: Re: SCC Class picks
Post by: Barren on July 21, 2015, 06:58:51 pm
Because sometimes if the mimes try to mimic other mimes then it results  in the game glitching out. It has happened before but I don't know when.

I do also want to remind everyone that nothing is set in stone as of how the rules will go. There is still time to vote for a rule.
Title: Re: SCC Class picks
Post by: Elmdork on July 21, 2015, 08:50:57 pm
we'll have to ban mime for this, I don't think we'll agree on a way to balance them, but 1 mime anything goes should be okay, just breaks the spirit of SCC. Your class has item/ability limitations. what do you strengthen? what do you reinforce? mime does open some equip possibilities not open to you otherwise, but kind of isn't an SCC anymore, is it?

Edit: if we're drawing classes, I want Lancer, Mediator or oracle.

Title: Re: SCC Class picks

I'll take Geomancer, Archer, or Mediator.
Title: Re: SCC Class picks
Post by: Barren on July 21, 2015, 10:01:51 pm
Since its already started, for those who plan on enter please select up to 3 classes you want to choose for the SCC tournament coming up. What you will end up with will be determined by the RNG.

For me, I will have squires, scholars, or lancers

I only feel comfortable with

Summoner or Wizard.

Sorry for everyone wanting me to pick 3... its just... the closest i would try is bard/dancer but i don't truly feel i had enough experience with it yet.

You can limit yourself to two its fine, for those who only picked 2 we can do the rng where its either an odd number or even number

Wizards - Even

Geomancer, priest, or Time Mage I guess. Geomancer is obviously my first pick if I could do that, but if it has to be decided by RNG those classes would be cool too.

Hello, I've watched many arena match here, include the S4 tourney match and I definitely interested on joining fft arena. Since I have fft on psx in along time, I'm familiar with this (even there are a new ability / equip, etc), i already saw them on the match and learned it from the arena guide.

As for the SCC tourney, i think that would be great to see the others creativity and a new-meta on build a unit. it will increase my knowledge to build a better strategies for the teamwork. so you can count me in.

I'll go with Oracle/ Priest / Mediator.

also I heard Starracer was working on a Paladin only build in the setup for this SCC... only issue is she is unsecure about what will happen... so i am not sure if she would be trying to join with it or not.

Shall we make a registation topic? Delete/close these other 2 threads and get everything together in one thread. I think we're pretty clear on how everything is going to go now as far as rules, so we just need to see who's entering and what classes everyone picks.

2x ability/1x item, unlimited JP, SCC tourney, double elimination, pick 3 classes of your choice to be determined by RNG which class you play in the tourney.

This is good note taking gatebuster202. I'm glad that we are getting to the bottom of what classes may need a buff/nerf.

I'm guessing people are staying away from thieves is because they are pretty much one of the strongest class in Arena. Too versatile except for MA.

You can be a Shintroy Mud, that's fine. We'll probably start the stream later tonight, so I'd ask everyone get their stuff in by noonish CST. (We can still add you after, but this way we're set for the stream. And I'll be away from the computer after twelve.)

I've updated the Doc, be sure to check it by Noon CMT. I'll be away from the computer and unable to update from then til Five or so my time

Me personally, if you're dead set on a class, do it. If you want oracle, go ahead. If corosar insists on summoner, go ahead.
That's me though and I'm not in charge. I just don't foresee that being a problem especially considering the two classes you guys are wanting.

Title: Re: SCC Class picks
Post by: silentkaster on July 23, 2015, 01:31:17 pm
Oh that's a good point about Monks! However, I think the rule should still stand and the reason is that if someone wants to choose a support to get a helmet or hat for the fourth unit, it is just a Monk restriction. Monks are already a good class with high HP base and decent stats so it shouldn't be too bad.

Your also the only Wizard too. (Which would have been far more challenging in my opinion. (Which is not a comment against you Corosar, we're both new to Arena. I doubt many would disagree if I said Wizards were more limited then most other classes.)

Title: Re: SCC Class picks
Post by: Corosar on July 23, 2015, 01:53:47 pm
Wizards have a higher MA, PA, & Health pool. They would be compatible with White magics holy more than a whitemage is and the only class stronger than a wizard in MA is the bard based on what the master guide says which is the only thing i have access to. Sure summon magic has more variety but i find their cast times can be a hindrance as well as black magics are almost 2x faster. in a way i say they are fairly even in terms of how hard they are to make. I went with summoner purely out of preference.

Besides i think silentkaster would make a great wizard team seeing as it would be the lowest now.
Title: Re: SCC Class picks
Post by: Mudvayne on July 23, 2015, 02:01:29 pm
So should we aim for a 24 player tourney? Or shoot higher?

19 players registered in a matter of like 2 days is pretty damn good so far. What's an ideal number of players for this? How long should we leave registrations open? Maybe another ~15 days? Then have the deadline of team submissions a few days after and get things rolling around mid August.

You can do elemental healing. But you might have to do it with various different elements. For example two wizards can heal each other with fire and ice while the others thunder and water

I think wizards can be pretty versatile and scary actually the high ma can make them good status inflictors and b/c of no jp cap you would not have to choose between flare and summons. I think their biggest hurdles will be keeping them healthy and avoiding opposing status inflictors. I think you would almost end up having to choose which units are ok being susceptible to which status gets inflicted, for example a wizard with draw out or a wizard with magic guns would be ok to be silenced but not don't acted/stopped.

Suppose I'll keep what I have for now.

I think I'm gonna put together a team or two today at work just to see some quick ideas of what my teams could possibly end up looking like. Probably nothing I'll end up using but just to get some ideas out there and see how composing a SCC team is since I've never made one. This should be fun.
